    Coordinating Text and Graphics in Explanation Generation

    To generate multimedia explanations, a system must be able to coordinate the use of different media in a single explanation. In this paper, we present an architecture that we have developed for COMET (COordinated Multimedia Explanation Testbed), a system that generates directions for equipment maintenance and repair, and we show how it addresses the coordination problem. In particular, we focus on the use of a single content planner that produces a common content description used by multiple media-specific generators, a media coordinator that makes a f'me-grained division of information between media, and bidirectional interaction between media-specific generators to allow influence across media.

    Evaluation of all-electric secondary power for transport aircraft

    This report covers a study by Douglas Aircraft Company (DAC) of electrical power systems for advanced transport aircraft based upon an all-electric design concept. The concept would eliminate distributed hydraulic and pneumatic secondary power systems, and feature an expanded secondary electrical power system redesigned to supply power to the loads customarily supplied by hydraulic or pneumatic power. The initial study was based on an advanced 20-kHz electrical power transmission and distribution system, using a system architecture supplied by NASA-Lewis Research Center for twin-engine aircraft with many advanced power conversion concepts. NASA-LeRC later requested DAC to refocus the study on 400-Hz secondary power distribution. Subsequent work was based on a three-engine MD-11 aircraft, selected by DAC as a baseline system design that would provide data for the comparative cost/benefit analysis. The study concluded that the 20-kHz concept produced many expected benefits, and that the all-electric trijet weight savings on hardware redesign would be 2,304 pounds plus a 2.1-percent fuel reduction and resized for a total weight reduction of 11,000 pounds. Cost reductions for a fleet of 800 aircraft in a 15-year production program were estimated at 76.71 million for RDT&E; 2.74 million per aircrat for production; 9.84millionfornonrecurringexpenses;9.84 million for nonrecurring expenses; 120,000 per aircraft for product support; and 300,000peraircraftperyearforoperatingandmaintenancecosts,givingapresentvalueof300,000 per aircraft per year for operating and maintenance costs, giving a present value of 1.914 billion saved or a future value of $10.496 billion saved

    Three-orbital study on the orbital distillation effect in the high Tc cuprates

    Our recent study has revealed that the mixture of the dz2 orbital component into the Fermi surface suppresses Tc in the cuprates such as La2CuO4. We have also shown that applying hydrostatic pressure enhances Tc due to smaller mixing of the Cu4s component. We call these the "orbital distillation" effect. In our previous study, the 4s orbital was taken into account through the hoppings in the dx2-y2 sector, but here we consider a model in which of the dx2-y2, dz2 and 4s orbitals are all considered explicitly.     Non-perturbative corrections to mean-field behavior: spherical model on spider-web graph

    We consider the spherical model on a spider-web graph. This graph is effectively infinite-dimensional, similar to the Bethe lattice, but has loops. We show that these lead to non-trivial corrections to the simple mean-field behavior. We first determine all normal modes of the coupled springs problem on this graph, using its large symmetry group. In the thermodynamic limit, the spectrum is a set of δ\delta-functions, and all the modes are localized. The fractional number of modes with frequency less than ω\omega varies as exp(C/ω)\exp (-C/\omega) for ω\omega tending to zero, where CC is a constant. For an unbiased random walk on the vertices of this graph, this implies that the probability of return to the origin at time tt varies as exp(Ct1/3)\exp(- C' t^{1/3}), for large tt, where CC' is a constant. For the spherical model, we show that while the critical exponents take the values expected from the mean-field theory, the free-energy per site at temperature TT, near and above the critical temperature TcT_c, also has an essential singularity of the type exp[K(TTc)1/2]\exp[ -K {(T - T_c)}^{-1/2}].Comment: substantially revised, a section adde

    Orbital order out of spin disorder: How to measure the orbital gap

    The interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the Mott-Hubbard insulator is studied by considering an orbitally degenerate superexchange model. We argue that orbital order and the orbital excitation gap in this model are generated through the order-from-disorder mechanism known previously from frustrated spin models. We propose that the orbital gap should show up indirectly in the dynamical spin structure factor; it can therefore be measured using the conventional inelastic neutron scattering method
