The presence of the recently described fungus-farming ant genus and species Cyatta abscondita is reported in the northwestern region of Misiones Province in Argentina. A single worker of C. abscondita was collected in a pitfall trap in a mature plantation of Pinus taeda in the Atlantic Forest biome. This finding expands the distribution of the genus and species, extending it farther south in the Neotropics.Fil: Ramos, Carolina Samanta. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Post-Learning Molecular Reactivation Underlies Taste Memory Consolidation

    Get PDF
It is considered that memory consolidation is a progressive process that requires post-trial stabilization of the information. In this regard, it has been speculated that waves of receptors activation, expression of immediate early genes, and replenishment of receptor subunit pools occur to induce functional or morphological changes to maintain the information for longer periods. In this paper, we will review data related to neuronal changes in the post-acquisition stage of taste aversion learning that could be involved in further stabilization of the memory trace. In order to achieve such stabilization, evidence suggests that the functional integrity of the insular cortex (IC) and the amygdala (AMY) is required. Particularly the increase of extracellular levels of glutamate and activation of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors within the IC shows a main role in the consolidation process. Additionally the modulatory actions of the dopaminergic system in the IC appear to be involved in the mechanisms that lead to taste aversion memory consolidation through the activation of pathways related to enhancement of protein synthesis such as the Protein Kinase A pathway. In summary, we suggest that post-acquisition molecular and neuronal changes underlying memory consolidation are dependent on the interactions between the AMY and the IC

Producción CientíficaBackground: Family caregivers play a crucial role in the overall healthcare system and in our society. The elderly population is significantly increasing, which creates a high demand for family caregivers. Few studies have investigated the impact of caregiving on musculoskeletal pain or proposed an active approach for dealing with it. Objectives: To determine and characterize musculoskeletal pain in female family caregivers (FFCs) and assess the effects of adding a therapeutic exercise program to a family caregiver care program (FCCP) on the quality of life, physical conditions, and psychological well-being of FFCs. Methods: A multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted with 68 FFCs recruited in two public healthcare areas. The intervention and control groups received the same conventional FCCP for 6 h across 4 sessions. The intervention group received an additional 36 sessions of physical therapeutic exercise (PTE) program over 12 weeks. Results: All caregivers reported having pain in particular locations. Lower back pain and neck pain were the locations most frequently cited, with a prevalence of 69.4% and 56.7%, respectively. In total, 80% of participants presented moderate pain intensity. The intervention group showed a significant decrease in the intensity of the pain (p < 0.001), as well as in anxiety, depression, subjective burden perception (p < 0.01), and quality-of-life variables, including MCS (mental component summary) (p < 0.05) and PCS (physical component summary) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: A PTE program improved the musculoskeletal pain of FFCs in a clinically relevant way. The caregivers who improved the most were those who initially presented the most intense pain, had the greatest levels of disability, and had the lowest quality of life.Colegio Profesional de Fisioterapeutas de Castilla y León (CPFCyL) - (grant INV 2019-11

Effects of a family caregiver care programme in musculoskeletal pain and disability in the shoulder-neck region—A randomised clinical trial

Producción CientíficaLife expectancy in Spain has increased and older people need more health care to improve their quality of life. The high demands of the population sometimes collapse health services, making them insufficient to cover their needs, which leads to the development of “non-professional caregivers”. These caregivers have suffered musculoskeletal injuries of the cervical spine and shoulders and should be guided and assessed on ergonomics, biomechanics, or kinesiotherapy. However, there are no interventions to help them care for themselves. This study presents the application of a physical exercise programme to prevent these disorders in women caregivers of dependent patients. It consists of a randomised controlled clinical trial with two groups: both received a family caregiver care programme, and the intervention group also received a physical therapeutic exercise programme for 12 weeks. A total of 62 caregivers completed the study, who were mostly daughters or wives of dependents. Of these, 70.97% presented a “moderate” pain intensity and a cervical disability of 13.72 ± 7.64 points in the NDI questionnaire in the initial evaluation. In the intervention group of caregivers, there was a significant decrease in the pain intensity and a significant increase (p < 0.05) in all cervical joint amplitude movements. Caregivers present a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders. The physical exercise programme was effective in reducing the intensity of pain, lumbar disability, and cervical disability of the family caregivers.Colegio Profesional de Fisioterapeutas de Castilla y León (CPFCyL) - (grant INV 2019-11

Observing the Onset of Effective Mass

The response of a particle in a periodic potential to an applied force is commonly described by an effective mass which accounts for the detailed interaction between the particle and the surrounding potential. Using a Bose-Einstein condensate of 87-Rb atoms initially in the ground band of an optical lattice, we experimentally show that the initial response of a particle to an applied force is in fact characterized by the bare mass. Subsequently, the particle response undergoes rapid oscillations and only over timescales long compared to that of the interband dynamics is the effective mass observed to be an appropriate description

Sustitución nucleofílica aromática con complejos metal(II)-aminas bifuncionales en tolueno: Determinaciones cinéticas y cálculos químico cuánticos

    Get PDF
Kinetic studies of Aromatic Nucleophilic Substitutions (ANS) of Metal(II)-amine complexes in toluene and quantum chemical calculations were carried out. Reported studies of ANS mechanism are mainly centered on the nature of substrates, nucleophile basicity and solvent polarity, while the study with coordination complexes are scarce. Amine complexes exhibit a differential reactivity with respect to uncomplexed amines depending on, among other factors, the metal center and the ligand structure. The present work describes kinetic studies carried out in toluene with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNClB) and Cu(II) and Fe(II) complexes with bifunctional amines. They were chosen considering their characteristics of bi-dentate ligands, the possible size of the metalo-cycle formed and their ability to form intra- or intermolecular hydrogen-bonds. Taking into account the dissimilar reactivity of amine-complexes, the results suggest a different stability of the complexes attributed to stereo-electronic and chelate effects, to form uncomplexed amines that would then react with the substrate, since the observed results do not provide evidence that metal-amine complexes react as a nucleophilic entity. On the contrary, they seem to dissociate prior to react rendering results consistent with a “dimer nucleophile” mechanism. To interpret kinetic results, we performed Density Functional Theory calculations to determine the equilibrium structure and the binding energy for Cu(II) and Fe(II) amine complexes. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the most stable complexes are those with three amines molecules as ligands, and that Cu(II) complexes are more stable than those with Fe(II), results that correlate with the order of reactivity experimentally obtained.Fil: Alvaro, Cecilia Elisabeth Silvana.
