    Low redshift constraints on energy-momentum-powered gravity models

    There has been recent interest in the cosmological consequences of energy-momentum-powered gravity models, in which the matter side of Einstein's equations is modified by the addition of a term proportional to some power, nn, of the energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the canonical linear term. In this work we treat these models as phenomenological extensions of the standard Λ\LambdaCDM, containing both matter and a cosmological constant. We also quantitatively constrain the additional model parameters using low redshift background cosmology data that are specifically from Type Ia supernovas and Hubble parameter measurements. We start by studying specific cases of these models with fixed values of n,n, which lead to an analytic expression for the Friedmann equation; we discuss both their current constraints and how the models may be further constrained by future observations of Type Ia supernovas for WFIRST complemented by measurements of the redshift drift by the ELT. We then consider and constrain a more extended parameter space, allowing nn to be a free parameter and considering scenarios with and without a cosmological constant. These models do not solve the cosmological constant problem per se. Nonetheless these models can phenomenologically lead to a recent accelerating universe without a cosmological constant at the cost of having a preferred matter density of around ΩM0.4\Omega_M\sim0.4 instead of the usual ΩM0.3\Omega_M\sim0.3. Finally we also briefly constrain scenarios without a cosmological constant, where the single component has a constant equation of state which needs not be that of matter; we provide an illustrative comparison of this model with a more standard dynamical dark energy model with a constant equation of state.Comment: 13+2 pages, 12+1 figures; A&A (in press

    Robustness of bipartite Gaussian entangled beams propagating in lossy channels

    Subtle quantum properties offer exciting new prospects in optical communications. Quantum entanglement enables the secure exchange of cryptographic keys and the distribution of quantum information by teleportation. Entangled bright beams of light attract increasing interest for such tasks, since they enable the employment of well-established classical communications techniques. However, quantum resources are fragile and undergo decoherence by interaction with the environment. The unavoidable losses in the communication channel can lead to a complete destruction of useful quantum properties -- the so-called "entanglement sudden death". We investigate the precise conditions under which this phenomenon takes place for the simplest case of two light beams and demonstrate how to produce states which are robust against losses. Our study sheds new light on the intriguing properties of quantum entanglement and how they may be tamed for future applications.Comment: To be published - Nature Photonic

    Disentanglement in Bipartite Continuous-Variable Systems

    Entanglement in bipartite continuous-variable systems is investigated in the presence of partial losses, such as those introduced by a realistic quantum communication channel, e.g. by propagation in an optical fiber. We find that entanglement can vanish completely for partial losses, in a situa- tion reminiscent of so-called entanglement sudden death. Even states with extreme squeezing may become separable after propagation in lossy channels. Having in mind the potential applications of such entangled light beams to optical communications, we investigate the conditions under which entanglement can survive for all partial losses. Different loss scenarios are examined and we derive criteria to test the robustness of entangled states. These criteria are necessary and sufficient for Gaussian states. Our study provides a framework to investigate the robustness of continuous-variable entanglement in more complex multipartite systems.Comment: Phys. Rev. A (in press

    Existence criteria for stabilization from the scaling behaviour of ionization probabilities

    We provide a systematic derivation of the scaling behaviour of various quantities and establish in particular the scale invariance of the ionization probability. We discuss the gauge invariance of the scaling properties and the manner in which they can be exploited as consistency check in explicit analytical expressions, in perturbation theory, in the Kramers-Henneberger and Floquet approximation, in upper and lower bound estimates and fully numerical solutions of the time dependent Schroedinger equation. The scaling invariance leads to a differential equation which has to be satisfied by the ionization probability and which yields an alternative criterium for the existence of atomic bound state stabilization.Comment: 12 pages of Latex, one figur

    Evaluation of air lime and clayish earth mortars for earthen wall renders

    CIAV2013 – International Conference on Vernacular Architecture, 7º ATP, VerSus, 16-20 october 2013An experimental rammed earth wall was traditionally made with local earth and characterized in terms of superficial hardness, compactness, thermal conductivity and water absorption, in exterior environmental conditions. Two mortars were made with an air lime and a mixture of three washed graduated siliceous sands, with volumetric proportions of 1:2 and 1:3 (air lime:sand). A clayish earth was characterized and applied as partial substitutions of air lime on 1:2 mortars and as partial substitutions of the finest sand on 1:3 mortars. Mortars were formulated and characterized in terms of constitution and consistency and samples of mortars applied on ceramic brick were prepared. For each volumetric proportion, mortars without earth and the ones with earth that presented the best workability were applied as renders on panels on the experimental rammed earth wall; also prismatic samples were made. The mortar samples and the renders on the wall were characterized at 90 days of age. This paper presents and discusses some of the results obtained with the characterization of the rammed earth wall, the fresh mortars and its application on the bricks and on the wall. Differences between the mortars are highlighted while their compatibility with traditional rammed earth wall is verified

    Comparative yield loss estimates due to blast in some upland rice cultivars.

    Leaf and panicle blast severities and grain yield of some upland rice cultivars were measured in three successive years in field plots unprotected or protected with fungicides. The variation in disease severities in different plots was used to establish relationships between severity of leaf and panicle blast and yield. Linear multiple regression equations for each cultivar by year were developed to estimate the yield decrease in different cultivars per unit increase in disease. Leaf blast severities at maximum tillering or booting stage and panicle blast 25 days after heading accounted for variation in grain yield in most of the cultivars. General equations combining five early and eight medium-duration rice cultivars were developed. The estimated percentage losses in grain yield due to blastwere 2.7 and 1.5 for one percent increase in blast in the early and medium-duration cultivars, respectively

    Ferramentas para caracterização fenotípica e genotípica de bactérias fixadoras de nitrogênio tornaram-se valiosas para os ecólogos de microrganismos devido ao seu poder discriminatório e estas vêm sendo utilizadas com sucesso para a caracterização e avaliação da diversidade genética destes microrganismosno solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar fenotípica e genotipicamente e avaliar a diversidade de isolados de nódulos de siratro provenientes de áreas com diferentes idades de revegetação após a mineração de bauxita. Amostras de solo foram coletadas em áreas revegetadas após a atividade de mineração de bauxita da Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN) em talhões de reflorestamento que foram revegetados em diferentes anos, compondo assim uma cronossequência de revegetação entre 1981 e 2006. Estas amostras foram distribuídas em vasos com capacidade de 1 kg e semeou-se Macroptilium atropurpureum. Os sessenta e sete isolados obtidos foram purificados e avaliados quanto às diversas características fenotípicas e através do BOX-PCR. Com base na caracterização fenotípica foi construído um dendrograma utilizando o programa estatístico R. A extração do DNA genômico dos sessenta e sete isolados foi realizada utilizando-se o kit Promega após prévio cultivo em meio YMA e as reações de amplificação realizadas segundo Kaschuk et al., 2006 utilizando o primer BOX A1R. Os perfis de bandas gerados pelo BOX-PCR foram utilizados no programa Gel Compar 2.0 Applied Maths para construção de um dendrograma de similaridade (coeficiente Jaccard e o método de agrupamento UPGMA). Observou-se elevada diversidade entre os isolados, que se distribuíram por 15 grupos na análise de BOX. Não foi observado efeito do ano de revegetação sobre a diversidade de isolados de nódulos de Macroptilium atropurpureum.Resumo 1452-1

    A spin chain model with non-Hermitian interaction: the Ising quantum spin chain in an imaginary field

    We investigate a lattice version of the Yang-Lee model which is characterized by a non-Hermitian quantum spin chain Hamiltonian. We propose a new way to implement PT-symmetry on the lattice, which serves to guarantee the reality of the spectrum in certain regions of values of the coupling constants. In that region of unbroken PT-symmetry we construct a Dyson map, a metric operator and find the Hermitian counterpart of the Hamiltonian for small values of the number of sites, both exactly and perturbatively. Besides the standard perturbation theory about the Hermitian part of the Hamiltonian, we also carry out an expansion in the second coupling constant of the model. Our constructions turns out to be unique with the sole assumption that the Dyson map is Hermitian. Finally we compute the magnetization of the chain in the z and x direction

    A DSS for operational management of wastewaters under uncertain conditions

    Wastewater treatment facilities of the Ave River basin (located in NW Portugal) are especially vulnerable to infiltration since they present considerable extensions of sewers installed in streams and rivers and collect wastewaters from longstanding sewer networks of five municipalities. The operational management of this complex system involves decision variables such as the selection of the treatment plant where collected wastewater will be treated, with implications for pumped volumes and consequent energy consumption. Aiming to reduce these inflows and increase the management performance of TRATAVE, the company responsible for operating the system, a monitoring network that includes the entire drainage network and treatment facilities operated by the company was designed and implemented. Several flow measurement devices were installed at strategic locations within the sewer network and integrated with a SCADA system responsible for its operation. All measured data was organized in databases. This monitoring platform will support the implementation of a decision support system (DSS) based on a hydrological model of the basin, a hydrodynamic model of the river network and the sewer network. The DSS is being implemented using the Delft-FEWS platform, integrating monitoring data and models.
