3D/2D Registration of Mapping Catheter Images for Arrhythmia Interventional Assistance
Radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation has transformed treatment for
tachyarrhythmias and has become first-line therapy for some tachycardias. The
precise localization of the arrhythmogenic site and the positioning of the RF
catheter over that site are problematic: they can impair the efficiency of the
procedure and are time consuming (several hours). Electroanatomic mapping
technologies are available that enable the display of the cardiac chambers and
the relative position of ablation lesions. However, these are expensive and use
custom-made catheters. The proposed methodology makes use of standard catheters
and inexpensive technology in order to create a 3D volume of the heart chamber
affected by the arrhythmia. Further, we propose a novel method that uses a
priori 3D information of the mapping catheter in order to estimate the 3D
locations of multiple electrodes across single view C-arm images. The monoplane
algorithm is tested for feasibility on computer simulations and initial canine

Single-tree detection in high-density LiDAR data from UAV-based survey
UAV-based LiDAR survey provides very-high-density point clouds, which involve very rich information about forest detailed structure, allowing for detection of individual trees, as well as demanding high computational load. Single-tree detection is of great interest for forest management and ecology purposes, and the task is relatively well solved for forests made of single or largely dominant species, and trees having a very evident pointed shape in the upper part of the canopy (in particular conifers). Most authors proposed methods based totally or partially on search of local maxima in the canopy, which has poor performance for species that have flat or irregular upper canopy, and for mixed forests, especially where taller trees hide smaller ones. Such considerations apply in particular to Mediterranean hardwood forests. In such context, it is imperative to use the whole volume of the point cloud, however keeping computational load tractable. The authors propose the use of a methodology based on modelling the 3D-shape of the tree, which improves performance w.r.t to maxima-based models. A case study, performed on a hazel grove, is provided to document performance improvement on a relatively simple, but significant, case
Innovative Technologies for Medical Education
This chapter aims to assess the current practices of anatomy education technology and provides future directions for medical education. It begins by presenting a historical synopsis of the current paradigms for anatomy learning followed by listing their limitations. Then, it focuses on several innovative educational technologies, which have been introduced over the past years to enhance the learning. These include E-learning, mobile apps, and mixed reality. The chapter concludes by highlighting future directions and addressing the barriers to fully integrating the technologies in the medical curriculum. As new technologies continue to arise, this process-oriented understanding and outcome-based expectations of educational technology should be embraced. With this view, educational technology should be valued in terms of how well the technological process informs and facilitates learning, and the acquisition and maintenance of clinical expertise
Generative Models for Relief Perspective Architectures
The present essay investigates the potential of generative representation applied to the study of relief perspective architectures realized in Italy between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In arts, and architecture in particular, relief perspective is a three-dimensional structure able to create the illusion of great depths in small spaces. A method of investigation applied to the case study of the Avila Chapel in Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome (Antonio Gherardi 1678) is proposed. The research methodology can be extended to other cases and is based on the use of a Relief Perspective Camera, which can create both a linear perspective and a relief perspective. Experimenting mechanically and automatically the perspective transformations from the affine space to the illusory space and vice versa has allowed us to see the case study in a different light

Il contributo illustra lo studio teorico e pratico della teoria delle linee di curvatura delle superfici elaborata da Gaspard Monge alla fine del Settecento, e la sua applicazione alle costruzioni in pietra da taglio, con particolare riferimento al caso di studio (proposto da Monge e rivisitato da Hachette e Leroy) di una volta ellissoidale. L’intento è quello di ottimizzare la costruzione di queste linee nel metodo della rappresentazione matematica, almeno per il caso specifico di studio. Il legame che sussiste fra la le teorie geometrico descrittive e i principi della progettazione stereotomica

new methodologies for the documentation of fortifiedarchitecture in the state of ruins
Fortresses and castles are important symbols of social and cultural identity providing tangible evidence of cultural unity in Europe. They are items for which it is always difficult to outline a credible prospect of reuse, their old raison d'être- namely the military, political and economic purposes for which they were built- having been lost. In recent years a Research Unit of the University of Bologna composed of architects from different disciplines has conducted a series of studies on fortified heritage in the Emilia Romagna region (and not only) often characterized by buildings in ruins. The purpose of this study is mainly to document a legacy, which has already been studied in depth by historians, and previously lacked reliable architectural surveys for the definition of a credible as well as sustainable conservation project. Our contribution will focus on different techniques and methods used for the survey of these architectures, the characteristics of which- in the past- have made an effective survey of these buildings difficult, if not impossible. The survey of a ruin requires, much more than the evaluation of an intact building, reading skills and an interpretation of architectural spaces to better manage the stages of documentation and data processing. Through a series of case studies of fortified buildings in ruins, we intend to describe the reasons that guided the choice of the methods and tools used and to highlight the potentials and the limits of these choices in financial terms
