    Phase-selective growth of κ\kappa- vs β\beta-Ga2_2O3_3 and (Inx_xGa1x_{1-x})2_2O3_3 by In-mediated metal exchange catalysis in plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy

    Its piezo- and potentially ferroelectric properties make the metastable kappa polymorph of Ga2_2O3_3 an interesting material for multiple applications, while In-incorporation into any polymorphs of Ga2_2O3_3 allows to lower their bandgap. In this work, we provide a guideline to achieve single phase κ\kappa-, β\beta-Ga2_2O3_3 as well as their (Inx_xGa1x_{1-x})2_2O3_3 alloys up to x = 0.14 and x = 0.17 respectively, using In-mediated metal exchange catalysis in plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MEXCAT-MBE). The polymorph transition from κ\kappa to β\beta is also addressed, highlighting the fundamental role played by the thermal stability of the κ\kappa-Ga2_2O3_3. Additionally, we also demonstrate the possibility to grow (2ˉ\bar{2}01) β\beta-Ga2_2O3_3 on top of α\alpha-Al2_2O3_3 (0001) at temperatures at least 100 {\deg}C above those achievable with conventional non-catalyzed MBE, opening the road for increased crystal quality in heteroepitaxy. The role of the substrate, as well as strain and structural defects in the growth of κ\kappa-Ga2_2O3_3 is also investigated by growing simultaneously on three different materials: (i) α\alpha-Al2_2O3_3 (0001), (ii) 20 nm of (2ˉ\bar{2}01) β\beta-Ga2_2O3_3 on α\alpha-Al2_2O3_3 (0001) and (iii) (2ˉ\bar{2}01) β\beta-Ga2_2O3_3 single crystal.Comment: Main text: 7 pages, 4 figures; Supplementary: 6 pages, 9 figure

    Aging and Error Processing: Age Related Increase in the Variability of the Error-Negativity Is Not Accompanied by Increase in Response Variability

    Background: Several studies report an amplitude reduction of the error negativity (Ne or ERN), an event-related potential occurring after erroneous responses, in older participants. In earlier studies it was shown that the Ne can be explained by a single independent component. In the present study we aimed to investigate whether the Ne reduction usually found in older subjects is due to an altered component structure, i.e., a true alteration in response monitoring in older subjects. Methodology/Principal Findings: Two age groups conducted two tasks with different stimulus response mappings and task difficulty. Both groups received fully balanced speed or accuracy instructions and an individually adapted deadline in both tasks. Event-related potentials, Independent Component analysis of EEG-data and between trial variability of the Ne were combined with analysis of error rates, coefficients of variation of RT-data and ex-Gaussian fittings to reaction times. The Ne was examined by means of ICA and PCA, yielding a prominent independent component on error trials, the Ne-IC. The Ne-IC was smaller in the older than the younger subjects for both speed and accuracy instructions. Also, the Ne-IC contributed to a much lesser extent to the Ne in older than in younger subjects. RT distribution parameters were not related to Ne/ERP-variability. Conclusions/Significance: The results show a genuine reduction as well as a different component structure of the Ne in older compared to young subjects.     Aberrant error processing in relation to symptom severity in obsessive–compulsive disorder: A multimodal neuroimaging study

    Background: Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by maladaptive repetitive behaviors that persist despite feedback. Using multimodal neuroimaging, we tested the hypothesis that this behavioral rigidity reflects impaired use of behavioral outcomes (here, errors) to adaptively adjust responses. We measured both neural responses to errors and adjustments in the subsequent trial to determine whether abnormalities correlate with symptom severity. Since error processing depends on communication between the anterior and the posterior cingulate cortex, we also examined the integrity of the cingulum bundle with diffusion tensor imaging. Methods: Participants performed the same antisaccade task during functional MRI and electroencephalography sessions. We measured error-related activation of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the error-related negativity (ERN). We also examined post-error adjustments, indexed by changes in activation of the default network in trials surrounding errors. Results: OCD patients showed intact error-related ACC activation and ERN, but abnormal adjustments in the post- vs. pre-error trial. Relative to controls, who responded to errors by deactivating the default network, OCD patients showed increased default network activation including in the rostral ACC (rACC). Greater rACC activation in the post-error trial correlated with more severe compulsions. Patients also showed increased fractional anisotropy (FA) in the white matter underlying rACC. Conclusions: Impaired use of behavioral outcomes to adaptively adjust neural responses may contribute to symptoms in OCD. The rACC locus of abnormal adjustment and relations with symptoms suggests difficulty suppressing emotional responses to aversive, unexpected events (e.g., errors). Increased structural connectivity of this paralimbic default network region may contribute to this impairment

    DBT-enhanced cognitive-behavioral treatment for trichotillomania: A randomized controlled trial

    Background and aims: Limited treatment options are available for trichotillomania (TTM) and most have modest outcomes. Suboptimal treatment results may be due to the failure of existing approaches to address all TTM styles. Methods: Thirty-eight DSM-IV TTM participants were randomly assigned across two study sites to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) -enhanced cognitive-behavioral treatment (consisting of an 11-week acute treatment and 3-month maintenance treatment) or a minimal attention control (MAC) condition. MAC participants had active treatment after the 11-week control condition. Follow-up study assessments were conducted three and six months after the maintenance period. Results: Open trial treatment resulted in significant improvement in TTM severity, emotion regulation (ER) capacity, experiential avoidance, anxiety and depression with changes generally maintained over time. In the randomized controlled trial, those with active treatment had greater improvement than those in the MAC condition for both TTM severity and ER capacity. Correlations between changes in TTM severity and ER capacity were not reported at post-treatment but did occur in maintenance and follow-up indicating reduced TTM severity with improved ER capacity. Conclusions: DBT-enhanced cognitive-behavioral treatment is a promising treatment for TTM. Future studies should compare this approach to other credible treatment interventions and investigate the efficacy of this approach in more naturalistic samples with greater comorbidity

    Response Monitoring in De Novo Patients with Parkinson's Disease

    BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is accompanied by dysfunctions in a variety of cognitive processes. One of these is error processing, which depends upon phasic decreases of medial prefrontal dopaminergic activity. Until now, there is no study evaluating these processes in newly diagnosed, untreated patients with PD ("de novo PD"). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we report large changes in performance monitoring processes using event-related potentials (ERPs) in de novo PD-patients. The results suggest that increases in medial frontal dopaminergic activity after an error (Ne) are decreased, relative to age-matched controls. In contrast, neurophysiological processes reflecting general motor response monitoring (Nc) are enhanced in de novo patients. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: It may be hypothesized that the Nc-increase is at costs of dopaminergic activity after an error; on a functional level errors may not always be detected and correct responses sometimes be misinterpreted as errors. This pattern differs from studies examining patients with a longer history of PD and may reflect compensatory processes, frequently occurring in pre-manifest stages of PD. From a clinical point of view the clearly attenuated Ne in the de novo PD patients may prove a useful additional tool for the early diagnosis of basal ganglia dysfunction in PD

    Inverse Vulcanization of Norbornenylsilanes: Soluble Polymers with Controllable Molecular Properties via Siloxane Bonds

    The inverse vulcanization produces high sulfur content polymers from alkenes and elemental sulfur. Control over properties such as the molar mass or the solubility of polymers is not well established, and existing strategies lack predictability or require large variations of the composition. Systematic design principles are sought to allow for a targeted design of materials. Herein, we report on the inverse vulcanization of norbornenylsilanes (NBS), with a different number of hydrolysable groups at the silicon atom. Inverse vulcanization of mixtures of NBS followed by polycondensation yielded soluble high sulfur content copolymers (50 wt % S) with controllable weight average molar mass (MW_{W}), polydispersity (Đ), glass transition temperature (TG), or zero-shear viscosity (η0_{0}). Polycondensation was conducted in the melt with HCl as a catalyst, abolishing the need for a solvent. Purification by precipitation afforded polymers with a greatly reduced amount of low molar mass species
