A fully-coherent all-sky search for gravitational-waves from compact binary coalescences
We introduce a fully-coherent method for searching for gravitational wave
signals generated by the merger of black hole and/or neutron star binaries.
This extends the coherent analysis previously developed and used for targeted
gravitational wave searches to an all-sky, all-time search. We apply the search
to one month of data taken during the fifth science run of the LIGO detectors.
We demonstrate an increase in sensitivity of 25% over the coincidence search,
which is commensurate with expectations. Finally, we discuss prospects for
implementing and running a coherent search for gravitational wave signals from
binary coalescence in the advanced gravitational wave detector data.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
Enhancing the decision-making process of project managers in the built environment: An integrated approach
A study of the project manager’s (PM) function must be to examine: what their role is, their skills, and training needed. The project manager needs wide perspective regarding the classic management functions of control, coordination, communication, and the settling of performance standards. If the PM is a professional, their performance must be of the highest standard, and must be accountable for a high level of productivity. This is the project manager’s Achilles heel.
Another problem is the absence of feedback during the early stages through to completion of the project. During the project’s life the relative importance of their responsibilities may change several times, including the constant changing of the dynamic environment. The PM will aim for a balanced emphasis; they will try to be flexible so they can adapt to new circumstances as they occur. The PM needs tried and tested methods to aid his decision making. This paper posits an integrated development and use of methods such as; scenario planning, effectuation, and reflective thinking to enhance decision making. The paper concludes with potential benefits that this method brings to the PM when fully understood and tested in the application domain
Flexible conformable hydrophobized surfaces for turbulent flow drag reduction
In recent years extensive work has been focused onto using superhydrophobic surfaces for drag reduction applications. Superhydrophobic surfaces retain a gas layer, called a plastron, when submerged underwater in the Cassie-Baxter state with water in contact with the tops of surface roughness features. In this state the plastron allows slip to occur across the surface which results in a drag reduction. In this work we report flexible and relatively large area superhydrophobic surfaces produced using two different methods: Large roughness features were created by electrodeposition on copper meshes; Small roughness features were created by embedding carbon nanoparticles (soot) into Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Both samples were made into cylinders with a diameter under 12 mm. To characterize the samples, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and confocal microscope images were taken. The confocal microscope images were taken with each sample submerged in water to show the extent of the plastron. The hydrophobized electrodeposited copper mesh cylinders showed drag reductions of up to 32% when comparing the superhydrophobic state with a wetted out state. The soot covered cylinders achieved a 30% drag reduction when comparing the superhydrophobic state to a plain cylinder. These results were obtained for turbulent flows with Reynolds numbers 10,000 to 32,500
Improved source localization with LIGO India
A global network of advanced gravitational wave interferometric detectors is
under construction. These detectors will offer an order of magnitude
improvement in sensitivity over the initial detectors and will usher in the era
of gravitational wave astronomy. In this paper, we evaluate the benefits of

Improved methods for detecting gravitational waves associated with short gamma-ray bursts
In the era of second generation ground-based gravitational wave detectors,
short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) will be among the most promising astrophysical
events for joint electromagnetic and gravitational wave observation. A targeted
search for gravitational wave compact binary merger signals in coincidence with
short GRBs was developed and used to analyze data from the first generation
LIGO and Virgo instruments. In this paper, we present improvements to this
search that enhance our ability to detect gravitational wave counterparts to
short GRBs. Specifically, we introduce an improved method for estimating the
gravitational wave background to obtain the event significance required to make
detections; implement a method of tiling extended sky regions, as required when
searching for signals associated to poorly localized GRBs from Fermi Gamma-ray
Burst Monitor or the InterPlanetary Network; and incorporate astrophysical
knowledge about the beaming of GRB emission to restrict the search parameter
space. We describe the implementation of these enhancements and demonstrate how
they improve the ability to observe binary merger gravitational wave signals

Robust spatially resolved pressure measurements using MRI with novel buoyant advection-free preparations of stable microbubbles in polysaccharide gels
MRI of fluids containing lipid coated microbubbles has been shown to be an effective tool for measuring the local fluid pressure. However, the intrinsically buoyant nature of these microbubbles precludes lengthy measurements due to their vertical migration under gravity and pressure-induced coalescence. A novel preparation is presented which is shown to minimize both these effects for at least 25 min. By using a 2% polysaccharide gel base with a small concentration of glycerol and 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine coated gas microbubbles, MR measurements are made for pressures between 0.95 and 1.44 bar. The signal drifts due to migration and amalgamation are shown to be minimized for such an experiment whilst yielding very high NMR sensitivities up to 38% signal change per bar
Supplementary feeding increases nestling feather corticosterone early in the breeding season in house sparrows
Several studies on birds have proposed that a lack of invertebrate prey in urbanized areas could be the main cause for generally lower levels of breeding success compared to rural habitats. Previous work on house sparrows Passer domesticus found that supplemental feeding in urbanized areas increased breeding success but did not contribute to population growth. Here, we hypothesize that supplementary feeding allows house sparrows to achieve higher breeding success but at the cost of lower nestling quality. As abundant food supplies may permit both high-and low-quality nestlings to survive, we also predict that within-brood variation in proxies of nestling quality would be larger for supplemental food broods than for unfed broods. As proxies of nestling quality, we considered feather corticosterone (CORTf), body condition (scaled mass index, SMI), and tarsus-based fluctuating asymmetry (FA). Our hypothesis was only partially supported as we did not find an overall effect of food supplementation on FA or SMI. Rather, food supplementation affected nestling phenotype only early in the breeding season in terms of elevated CORTf levels and a tendency for more variable within-brood CORTf and FA. Early food supplemented nests therefore seemed to include at least some nestlings that faced increased stressors during development, possibly due to harsher environmental (e.g., related to food and temperature) conditions early in the breeding season that would increase sibling competition, especially in larger broods. The fact that CORTf was positively, rather than inversely, related to nestling SMI further suggests that factors influencing CORTf and SMI are likely operating over different periods or, alternatively, that nestlings in good nutritional condition also invest in high-quality feathers
The Archaeology of the Siege of Fort William, 1746
In August and September 2007, the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology and Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD) conducted a programme of archaeological investigation of the remains of the old fort at Fort William and part of The Parade in the town of Fort William on the west coast of Scotland. The fieldwork involved geophysical survey at the fort and The Parade, followed by trial excavation of anomalies. Trial trenches at The Parade exposed several rich midden deposits and material providing evidence for the burning of the town of Maryburgh, as suggested in contemporary accounts in 1746. The results at the fort were not so positive, as most traces of the garrison were removed in the 19th and 20th centuries through its use as a railway yard; however, a trench outside the fort suggests survival of midden deposits pre-dating this period of destruction. This part-Heritage Lottery assisted project was a Highland 2007 initiative supported by Lochaber Community Fund and Highland Council, and included active participation on the part of the local community, including school groups and metal detectorists

Synthesis of tetrahydroquinoline enediyne core analogs of dynemicin
A process is described for the preparation of the core azobicyclo[7.3.1]tridecaenediyne moiety of the antitumor antibiotic dynemicin. The synthesis allows efficient production of the enediyne as a stable, compound in good yield from the adamantyl N-protected azabicyclo[7.3.1]tridecadiyne. The adamantyl protecting group is employed in the starting material, N-adamantyl dihydroquinoline or N-adamantyl 6-methoxy quinoline. Also disclosed are process for the synthesis of 3-hydroxy-6-methoxyquinoline and several N-substituted derivatives of azobicyclo[7.3.1]tridecaenediyne. Solid tumor and leukemia assays were performed on the analogs of dynemicin. The results suggest a method that these compounds will useful in treating certain types of leukemias and solid tumors. The disclosed synthesis provides a route to new dynemicin intermediates and analogs which will allow development of second and third generation dynemicins.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
