    Three-Dimensional Bioprinting Materials with Potential Application in Preprosthetic Surgery

    Current methods in handling maxillofacial defects are not robust and are highly dependent on the surgeon’s skills and the inherent potential in the patients’ bodies for regenerating lost tissues. Employing custom-designed 3D printed scaffolds that securely and effectively reconstruct the defects by using tissue engineering and regenerative medicine techniques can revolutionize preprosthetic surgeries. Various polymers, ceramics, natural and synthetic bioplastics, proteins, biomolecules, living cells, and growth factors as well as their hybrid structures can be used in 3D printing of scaffolds, which are still under development by scientists. These scaffolds not only are beneïŹcial due to their patient-speciïŹc design, but also may be able to prevent micromobility, make tension free soft tissue closure, and improve vascularity. In this manuscript, a review of materials employed in 3D bioprinting including bioceramics, biopolymers, composites, and metals is conducted. A discussion of the relevance of 3D bioprinting using these materials for craniofacial interventions is included as well as their potential to create analogs to craniofacial tissues, their beneïŹts, limitations, and their application

    Acceleration of Amphibian Forelimb Regeneration By Polypeptide Growth Factors

    Growth factors are potentially important modulators of epimorphic regeneration. This study examined effects of intraperitoneal administration of selected growth factors on limb regeneration of adult newts, Notophthalmus viridescens. These agents stimulated regeneration, producing overlapping but nonidentical effects. Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) stimulated bud emergence (8.3 ± 0.6 and 8.3 ± 0.7 days, respectively, vs 11.4 ± 1.1 days for controls). Progression to the cone stage was enhanced by both FGF-2 and transforming growth factor beta 5 ( TGF-~ 5) ; 14.6 ± 0.5 and 15.4 ± 0.4 days with FGF-2 and TGF-~5 , respectively, vs 16.5 ± 0.5 days in controls. Insulin accelerated attainment of the palette stage, 17.0 ± 0.7 days vs 19.0 ± 0.4 days for controls. No treatments affected attaining the digital stage; means between 22.4 and 23.4 days. Histological analysis revealed changes consistent with gross observations. In addition, regenerates from newts treated with FGF-2, TGF-~5. and insulin displayed signs of greater (or earlier) histogenesis than did control animals. These results are consistent with the notion that FGF-2, TGF-~5. and possibly lGF-I stimulate proliferation of blastema cells and that insulin, FGF-2, and TGF-~5 promote differentiation and histogenesis during forelimb regeneration. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that several polypeptide growth factors positively affect the progress of forelimb regeneration, that different growth factors influence the same or similar events of epimorphic regeneration, and that diverse growth factors have nonidentical effects on regeneration

    Following the ‘credit crunch’ 2007-2008, the UK entered the deepest recessionary conditions in living memory. As the liquidity from the financial services sector came to an abrupt halt, the investment ‘life blood’ of the economy in short supply, numerous companies, including long established high street businesses, ceased trading and consequently, unemployment rates rose to the highest levels since the 1980s. After the initial ‘bailout’ of the banking sector, political attention turned to the growing public deficit and the spectre of public sector austerity came to dominate the policy agenda. This agenda swiftly moved from how best to regulate the financial services industry to the question of the ‘welfare bill’ and the growing problem of ‘worklessness’. From this point, particularly as the Universal Credit Scheme passed through parliament and came to be implemented in various phases, much was said in political and policy debates about the lives of the ‘poor’ and many ‘common sense’ assumptions informed these discussions. However as is often the case, omitted from these discussions were the voices of those people living of low income. To redress this imbalance, the report aims to document the reality of life on a low income during this period, by affording primacy to the ‘voices’ of those living in poverty

    PT. LEN is one of state owned companies (BUMN) in Indonesia which is engaged in technology industries. As one of state owned companies (BUMN) which enroll in strategic industries, PT. LEN has a very important role in supporting the growth of Indonesia\u27s development, PT. LEN\u27s business performance has successfully led PT. LEN as a trillion company. In 2011, the life cycle of this company has been projected from phase stability to phase growth. Nevertheless, one issue has arisen when the growth of the company is hampered by funding issue, especially the lack of capital to run the projects. The growth of revenues become unbalanced with working capital, especially liquid working capital (cash). The objective of the company is to Go Public with huge amount of capital which can support the business activities and also to strengthen the capital structure and the liquidity of assets. The sales revenue from some of its stocks is used as an alternative source of fund apart from bank loans. The fund is used to expand the company\u27s activities, to build the facility of developing system, and also to build fabrication workshop. The total amount of fund needed is 590 billion. During the IPO process, there are several things to be concerned, internally and externally. From the company\u27s internal perspective, several things to be be concerned are company\u27s feasibility studies in doing IPO. From the external perspective will affect investors\u27 interest to the company. This thesis uses discounted cash flow as a method to calculate the valuation of the company. This method is used to value stock\u27s price and the amount of stocks issued by PT. LEN for IP process so the price will be interesting to the investors. Other than to fulfill the needs of source funding, IPO process is also one of the program to privatize the state owned companies in Indonesia which is included in BUMN\u27s Masterplan 2010-2014

    Development and evaluation of ibuprofen transdermal gel formulations

    Purpose: To develop an ibuprofen transdermal gel with a capability for both topical and systemic drug delivery. Methods: Ibuprofen gel formulations, incorporating various permeation enhancers, were prepared using chitosan as a gelling agent. The formulations were examined for their in vitro characteristics including viscosity, pH and drug release as well as in vivo pharmacological activities. Carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema model was used for the evaluation of their analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. A commercial ibuprofen gel product (IbutopŸ) was used as a reference. Results: The formulations containing 5 % of either menthol or glycerol as permeation enhancers gave drug release patterns comparable to that of the reference product. Propanol increased the apparent viscosity of the test gels to the same extent as that of the reference. Drug release from the formulationsfitted best to the Higuchi model. A significant in vivo analgesic effect was produced by the test formulations containing 5 % menthol and 20 % propylene glycol and the effect was superior to that obtained with the reference product. However, no significant anti-inflammatory activity was exerted by any of the test gel formulations (p > 0.05).Conclusion: Ibuprofen gel preparations containing 5 % menthol and 20 % propylene glycol, respectively, exhibited pronounced analgesic activity and could be further developed for topical and systemic delivery of ibuprofen.Keywords:  Transdermal gel, Chitosan, Ibuprofen, Menthol, Propylene glycol, Penetration enhance

    Attitudes and Perceptions of Healthcare Providers and Medical Students Towards Clinical Pharmacy Services in United Arab Emirates

    Purpose: To explore healthcare providers' (HCPs) and medical students’ attitudes to, and perceptions of the pharmaceutical services that clinical pharmacists can provide in United Arab Emirates.Methods: A total of 535 participants (265 HCPs and 270 medical students) were asked to complete a questionnaire over a period of three months (January through March 2009). Results: Almost three quarters of the students perceived that the clinical pharmacist is an important part of the healthcare team while 82% believed that clinical pharmacists can help improve the quality of medical care in hospitals. Eighty one percent of medical students expressed confidence in the ability of clinical pharmacists to minimize medication errors. Although slightly more than half of the respondents (53%) reported that they did not have clinical pharmacy services in their institutions, there was substantial willingness among physicians and nurses to cooperate with clinical pharmacists. The majority of physicians (92%) and nurses (87%) expressed the view that the clinical pharmacist is an important integral part of the healthcare team. Conclusion: The HCPs and medical students in the study setting valued the role of clinical pharmacists in healthcare delivery. However, new developments in pharmacy services in the UAE hospital setting is recommended for adoption in hospitals.Key words: Clinical pharmacy services, Pharmaceutical care, Perception, Healthcare providers

    How paradata can illuminate technical, social and professional role changes between the Poverty in the UK (1967/1968) and Poverty and Social Exclusion in the UK (2012) surveys

    This article brings together analyses of the micro paradata ‘by-products’ from the 1967/1968 Poverty in the United Kingdom (PinUK) and 2012 Poverty and Social Exclusion in the UK (PSE) surveys to explore changes in the conditions of production over this 45 year period. We highlight technical, social and professional role continuities and changes, shaped by the institutionalisation of survey researchers, the professionalization of the field interviewer, and economisation. While there are similarities between the surveys in that field interviewers were and are at the bottom of the research hierarchy, we demonstrate an increasing segregation between the core research team and field interviewers. In PinUK the field interviewers are visible in the paper survey booklets; through their handwritten notes on codes and in written marginalia they can ‘talk’ to the central research team. In PSE they are absent from the computer mediated data, and from communication with the central team. We argue that, while there have been other benefits to field interviewers, their relational labour has become less visible in a shift from the exercise of observational judgement to an emphasis on standardisation. Yet, analyses of what field interviewers actually do show that they still need to deploy the same interpersonal skills and resourcefulness to secure and maintain interviews as they did 45 years previously

It requires extensive processing to perform the Resolution Enhancement Techniques (RETs) required to transfer the design data to a working Integrated Circuits (ICs). The processing power and computational runtime for RETs tasks is ever increasing due to the continuous reduction of the feature size and the expansion of the chip area. State-of-the-art research sought Machine Learning (ML) technologies to reduce runtime and computational power, however they are still not used in production yet. In this study, we analyze the reasons holding back ML computational lithography from being production ready and present a novel highly scalable end-to-end flow that enables production ready ML-RET correction
