Effect of herbicides on yield components of sugarcane genotypes
O método de manejo de plantas daninhas mais usado em cana-de-açúcar tem sido o químico. Porém, ocorre grande variação de tolerância dos genótipos dessa cultura aos herbicidas utilizados. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de herbicidas sobre os componentes de rendimento de genótipos de cana-de-açúcar. O delineamento experimental adotado foi de blocos casualizados, arranjado em parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. Nas parcelas alocaram-se os tratamentos; ametryn (2000 g ha-1), trifloxysulfuron-sodium (22,5 g ha-1), ametryn + trifloxysulfuron-sodium (1463 + 37 g ha-1) e a testemunha capinada. Nas subparcelas foram dispostos os genótipos de cana-de-açúcar; RB72454, RB835486, RB855113, RB855156, RB867515, RB925211, RB925345, RB937570, RB947520 e SP80-1816. Os resultados demonstram que a fitotoxicidade dos herbicidas foi maior nos genótipos RB835486 e RB855113, em relação a testemunha capinada. O diâmetro de colmos dos genótipos RB867515, RB925211 e SP8018-16 não foi afetado pelos herbicidas nas doses utilizadas. O número de nós por planta e o número de plantas de cana-de-açúcar m-1 foram reduzidos pelo uso de trifloxysulfuron-sodium e ametryn + trifloxysulfuron-sodium nos genótipos RB867515, RB925211 e RB947520. A produtividade de açúcar do genótipo RB855156 foi menor ao se aplicar os herbicidas. Comparando-se todos os genótipos observou-se que o SP80-1816 e o RB867515 foram os mais tolerantes, sobressaindo-se aos demais. Com base nos resultados conclui-se que existe tolerância diferenciada dos genótipos de cana-de-açúcar aos herbicidas testados.The most used weed control method in the sugarcane crop nowadays is the chemical. However, there is a great variation in selectivity of the genotypes regarding these products. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of herbicides on yield components of sugarcane genotypes. It was used a randomized blocks design, in a split-splot, with four replicates. In the plots were allocated the treatments: ametryn (2000 g ha-1), trifloxysulfuron-sodium (22.5 g ha-1), ametryn + trifloxysulfuron-sodium (1,463 + 37 g ha-1) and the weeded control. In the subplots were the sugarcane genotypes: RB72454, RB835486, RB855113, RB855156, RB867515, RB925211, RB925345, RB937570, RB947520 and SP80-1816. Results show that herbicide phytotoxicity was higher in the RB835486 and RB855113 genotypes, when compared to the weeded control. Stalk diameter of ‘RB867515’, ‘RB925211’ and ‘SP8018-16’ was not affected when applying herbicides. The number of nodes per plant and the number of sugarcane plants per meter were affected by the use of trifloxysulfuron-sodium and ametryn + trifloxysulfuron-sodium in ‘RB867515’, ‘RB925211’ and ‘RB947520’. Sugarcane productivity of the RB855156 genotype was lower when applying the herbicides. Comparing all the genotypes among themselves and in the presence of the herbicides, it was observed that the ‘SP80-1816’ and the ‘RB867515’ were the most tolerant, standing out in relation to the others. Based on the results, it can be concluded that there is different tolerance of the sugarcane genotypes regarding the tested herbicides

They tend to worry patients and can affect their quality of life. They are often a symptom associated with cardiac rhythm disorders, although there are other etiologies. For diagnosis, it is essential to be able to reliably correlate the symptoms with an electrocardiographic record allowing the identification or ruling out of a possible rhythm disorder. However, reaching a diagnosis is not always simple, given that they tend to be transitory symptoms and the patient is frequently asymptomatic at the time of assessment. In recent years, electrocardiographic monitoring systems have incorporated many technical improvements that solve several of the 24-h Holter monitor limitations. The objective of this review is to provide an update on the different monitoring methods currently available, remarking their indications and limitations, to help healthcare professionals to appropriately select and use them in the work-up of patients with palpitations
Micromorphological characteristics of barnyardgrass biotypes resistant and susceptible to quinclorac
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do herbicida quinclorac nas características anatômicas de folhas e raízes de biótipos de capim‑arroz (Echinochloa spp.), resistente e suscetível a este herbicida, por meio de avaliações micromorfométricas. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de plástico com capacidade de 250 cm3. As imagens dos cortes foram obtidas com microscópio de luz equipado com sistema U‑Photo, acoplado à câmera digital conectada a microcomputador. Na seção transversal da lâmina foliar e das raízes, utilizou-se objetiva de 10X, tendo-se avaliado 20 cortes/campos por planta, com dez medições por corte e quatro repetições por tratamento. Observaram-se diferenças entre os biótipos resistente e suscetível, tanto na ausência quanto na presença do quinclorac. O biótipo resistente apresenta lâmina foliar pouco afetada pelo herbicida; no entanto, há modificação na constituição dos tecidos radiculares com a formação mais acentuada de aerênquima. O biótipo suscetível também apresenta formação de aerênquima quando tratado com o quinclorac, mas em quantidade inferior ao observado no biótipo resistente.The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the herbicide quinclorac on anatomical traits of leaves and roots of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa spp.) biotypes, susceptible and resistant to this herbicide, by micromorphometric assessments. Plants were grown in plastic pots with 250 cm3 capacity. The images of plant sections were obtained with a light microscope equipped with a U‑Photo system, coupled to a digital photo camera connected to a microcomputer. For cross-sections of leaf blades and roots, 10X objectives were used, and 20 sections/fields per plant were evaluated, with ten measurements per section and four replicates per treatment. Differences were observed between resistant and susceptible biotypes, both in the absence and in the presence of quinclorac. The resistant biotype shows leaf blades that are less affected by the herbicide; however, there are changes in root tissue constitution with increased aerenchyma formation. The susceptible biotype also shows formation of aerenchyma when treated with quinclorac, but in lower levels than those observed for the resistant biotype
Sensitivity improvement of a humidity sensor based on silica nanospheres on a long-period fiber grating
This work addresses a new configuration that improves the sensitivity of a humidity sensor based on a long-period fiber grating coated with a SiO(2)-nanospheres film. An intermediate higher refractive index overlay, deposited through Electrostatic Self-Assembly, is placed between the fiber cladding and the humidity sensitive film in order to increase the total effective refractive index of the coating. With this intermediate design, a three-fold improvement in the sensitivity was obtained. Wavelength shifts up to 15 nm against 5 nm were achieved in a humidity range from 20% to 80%.This work was supported in part by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) with the grant

Exploring the key drivers of riparian woodland successional pathways across three European river reaches

To evaluate these impacts, process-based models are preferred over data-driven approaches. However, they require extensive knowledge about ecohydrological processes. To facilitate the implementation of such process-based models, the key drivers of riparian woodland successional pathways across three river reaches, in Austria, Portugal, and Spain, were explored, employing two complementary approaches. The principal component analyses highlighted the importance of the physical gradients determining the placement of the succession phases within the riparian and floodplain zones. The generalized additive models revealed that the initial and pioneer succession phases, characteristic of the colonization stage, appeared in areas highly morphodynamic, close in height and distance to the water table, and with coarse substrate, whereas elder phases within the transitional and mature stages showed incremental differences, occupying less dynamic areas with finer substrate. The Austrian site fitted well the current successional theory (elder phases appearing sequentially further up and distant), but at the Portuguese site, the tolerance of the riparian species to drought and flash flood events governed their placement. Finally, at the Spanish site, the patchy distribution of the elder phases was the remnants of formative events that reshaped the river channel. These results highlight the complex relationships between flow regime, channel morphology, and riparian vegetation. Structural Flexibility in Activated Carbon Materials Prepared under Harsh Activation Conditions
Although traditionally high-surface area carbon materials have been considered as rigid structures with a disordered three dimensional (3D) network of graphite microdomains associated with a limited electrical conductivity (highly depending on the porous structure and surface chemistry), here we show for the first time that this is not the case for activated carbon materials prepared using harsh activation conditions (e.g., KOH activation). In these specific samples a clear structural re-orientation can be observed upon adsorption of different organic molecules, the structural changes giving rise to important changes in the electrical resistivity of the material. Whereas short chain hydrocarbons and their derivatives give rise to an increased resistivity, the contrary occurs for longer-chain hydrocarbons and/or alcohols. Insertion (22;9)(q11;q34q21) in a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia characterized by fluorescence in situ hybridization
An unusual cytogenetic rearrangement, described as ins(22;9)(q11;q34q21), was detected in a 49-year-old male patient diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) revealed a b3a2 fusion transcript. In order to confirm the cytogenetic findings and fully characterize the inverted insertion, we performed fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assays using locus-specific and whole chromosome painting probes. Our FISH analysis showed the presence of the BCR/ABL fusion gene, verified the insertion and determined that the breakpoint on chromosome 22 where the insertion took place was located proximal to the BCR gene and distal to the TUPLE1 gene on 22q11
Treatment with tocilizumab or corticosteroids for COVID-19 patients with hyperinflammatory state: a multicentre cohort study (SAM-COVID-19)
Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the association between tocilizumab or corticosteroids and the risk of intubation or death in patients with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) with a hyperinflammatory state according to clinical and laboratory parameters.
Methods: A cohort study was performed in 60 Spanish hospitals including 778 patients with COVID-19 and clinical and laboratory data indicative of a hyperinflammatory state. Treatment was mainly with tocilizumab, an intermediate-high dose of corticosteroids (IHDC), a pulse dose of corticosteroids (PDC), combination therapy, or no treatment. Primary outcome was intubation or death; follow-up was 21 days. Propensity score-adjusted estimations using Cox regression (logistic regression if needed) were calculated. Propensity scores were used as confounders, matching variables and for the inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTWs).
Results: In all, 88, 117, 78 and 151 patients treated with tocilizumab, IHDC, PDC, and combination therapy, respectively, were compared with 344 untreated patients. The primary endpoint occurred in 10 (11.4%), 27 (23.1%), 12 (15.4%), 40 (25.6%) and 69 (21.1%), respectively. The IPTW-based hazard ratios (odds ratio for combination therapy) for the primary endpoint were 0.32 (95%CI 0.22-0.47; p < 0.001) for tocilizumab, 0.82 (0.71-1.30; p 0.82) for IHDC, 0.61 (0.43-0.86; p 0.006) for PDC, and 1.17 (0.86-1.58; p 0.30) for combination therapy. Other applications of the propensity score provided similar results, but were not significant for PDC. Tocilizumab was also associated with lower hazard of death alone in IPTW analysis (0.07; 0.02-0.17; p < 0.001).
