The quadratic scalar radius of the pion and the mixed π−K\pi-K radius

We consider the quadratic scalar radius of the pion, , and the mixed $K-\pi$ scalar radius, . With respect to the second, we point out that the more recent (post-1974) experimental results in Kl3K_{l3} decays imply a value, =0.31±0.06fm2=0.31\pm0.06 {\rm fm}^2, which is about 2σ2 \sigma above estimates based on chiral perturbation theory. On the other hand, we show that this value of suggests the existence of a low mass S$\tfrac{1}{2}$ $K\pi$ resonance. With respect to , we contest the central value and accuracy of current evaluations, that give =0.61±0.04fm2=0.61\pm0.04 {\rm fm}^2. Based on experiment, we find a robust lower bound of <rS,π2>≄0.70±0.06fm2<r^2_{{\rm S},\pi}>\geq0.70\pm0.06 {\rm fm}^2 and a reliable estimate, <rS,π2>=0.75±0.07fm2<r^2_{{\rm S},\pi}>=0.75\pm0.07 {\rm fm}^2, where the error bars are attainable. This implies, in particular, that the chiral result for is 1.4σ1.4 \sigma away from experiment. We also comment on implications about the chiral parameter lˉ4\bar{l}_4, very likely substantially larger (and with larger errors) than usually assumed.Comment: PlainTeX file. Ocean access beneath the southwest tributary of Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica

    Get PDF
The catchments of Pine Island Glacier and Thwaites Glacier in the Amundsen Sea Embayment are two of the largest, most rapidly changing, and potentially unstable sectors of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. They are also neighboring outlets, separated by the topographically unconfined eastern shear margin of Thwaites Glacier and the southwest tributary of Pine Island Glacier. This tributary begins just downstream of the eastern shear margin and flows into the Pine Island ice shelf. As a result, it is a potential locus of interaction between the two glaciers and could result in cross-catchment feedback during the retreat of either. Here, we analyze relative basal reflectivity profiles from three radar sounding survey lines collected using the UTIG HiCARS radar system in 2004 and CReSIS MCoRDS radar system in 2012 and 2014 to investigate the extent and character of ocean access beneath the southwest tributary. These profiles provide evidence of ocean access ~12 km inland of the 1992–2011 InSAR-derived grounding line by 2014, suggesting either retreat since 2011 or the intrusion of ocean water kilometers inland of the grounding line

High resolution boundary conditions of an old ice target near Dome C, Antarctica

A high resolution (1 km line spacing) aerogeophysical survey was conducted over a region near the East Antarctic Ice Sheet's Dome C that may hold a 1.5 million year old climate record. New ice thickness data derived from an airborne coherent radar sounder was combined with unpublished data that was unavailable for earlier compilations. We find under the primary candidate region elevated rough topography, near a number of subglacial lakes, but also regions of smoother bed. The high resolution of this ice thickness dataset also allows us to explore the nature of ice thickness uncertainties in the context of radar geometry and processing

Spin Down of Rotating Compact Magnetized Strange Stars in General Relativity

We find that in general relativity slow down of the pulsar rotation due to the magnetodipolar radiation is more faster for the strange star with comparison to that for the neutron star of the same mass. Comparison with astrophysical observations on pulsars spindown data may provide an evidence for the strange star existence and, thus, serve as a test for distinguishing it from the neutron star.Comment: 6 pages; Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Scienc

International prescribing patterns and polypharmacy in older people with advanced chronic kidney disease: results from the European Quality study

    Get PDF
Background. People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at high risk of polypharmacy. However, no previous study has investigated international prescribing patterns in this group. This article aims to examine prescribing and polypharmacy patterns among older people with advanced CKD across the countries involved in the European Quality (EQUAL) study.Methods. The EQUAL study is an international prospective cohort study of patients >= 65 years of age with advanced CKD. Baseline demographic, clinical and medication data were analysed and reported descriptively. Polypharmacy was defined as >= 5 medications and hyperpolypharmacy as >= 10. Univariable and multivariable linear regressions were used to determine associations between country and the number of prescribed medications. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression were used to determine associations between country and hyperpolypharmacy.Results. Of the 1317 participants from five European countries, 91% were experiencing polypharmacy and 43% were experiencing hyperpolypharmacy. Cardiovascular medications were the most prescribed medications (mean 3.5 per person). There were international differences in prescribing, with significantly greater hyperpolypharmacy in Germany {odds ratio (OR) 2.75 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.73-4.37]; P < 0.001, reference group UK}, the Netherlands [OR 1.91 (95% CI 1.32-2.76); P = 0.001] and Italy [OR 1.57 (95% CI 1.15-2.15); P = 0.004]. People in Poland experienced the least hyperpolypharmacy [OR 0.39 (95% CI 0.17-0.87); P = 0.021].Conclusions. Hyperpolypharmacy is common among older people with advanced CKD, with significant international differences in the number of medications prescribed. Practice variation may represent a lack of consensus regarding appropriate prescribing for this high-risk group for whom pharmacological treatment has great potential for harm as well as benefit.Clinical epidemiolog

Weber and church governance: religious practice and economic activity

    Get PDF
The debate about the relationship between religion and economic activity in the wake of Weber has been cast largely in terms of belief and values. This article suggests an alternative focus on practice. It argues that taken for granted practices of church governance formed to-hand resources for the organization of economic activity. The argument is developed through an examination of the historical development of church governance practices in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, with particular emphasis on the way in which theological belief gave rise to practices of accountability and record keeping. In turn such practices contributed to a ‘culture of organization’ which had implications for economic activity. A focus on governance practices can help to illuminate enduring patterns of difference in the organization of economic activity
