    Multiple WLW_L Production from Inelastic WLWLW_L W_L Scattering at s^MH\sqrt{\hat{s}} \gg M_H

We explore the inelastic production of multiple longitudinal weak bosons as a manifestation of a strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector. By analogy with QCD, final states with large multiplicities are expected to occur not far above the energy scale of the lowest resonances of the underlying strong theory. We consider the feasibility of observing such phenomena in the environment of a very high energy hadron collider.Comment: 23 pages, Latex, 4 figures in separate postscript file, UCLA Report 92/TEP/4

Improved W boson mass measurement with the D0 detector

    Get PDF
We have measured the W boson mass using the D0 detector and a data sample of 82 pb^-1 from the Tevatron collider. This measurement used W -> e nu decays, where the electron is close to a boundary of a central electromagnetic calorimeter module. Such 'edge' electrons have not been used in any previous D0 analysis, and represent a 14% increase in the W boson sample size. For these electrons, new response and resolution parameters are determined, and revised backgrounds and underlying event energy flow measurements are made. When the current measurement is combined with previous D0 W boson mass measurements, we obtain M_W = 80.483 +/- 0.084 GeV. The 8% improvement from the previous D0 measurement is primarily due to the improved determination of the response parameters for non-edge electrons using the sample of Z bosons with non-edge and edge electrons.Comment: submitted to Phys. Study of ttbar Production in ppbar Collisions Using Total Transverse Energy

We analyze a sample of W + jet events collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV to study ttbar production. We employ a simple kinematical variable "H", defined as the scalar sum of the transverse energies of the lepton, neutrino and jets. For events with a W boson and four or more jets, the shape of the "H" distribution deviates by 3.8 standard deviations from that expected from known backgrounds to ttbar production. However this distribution agrees well with a linear combination of background and ttbar events, the agreement being best for a top mass of 180 GeV/c^2.Comment: Postscript file (gzip+uuencode). 5-page, two-column PRL format (RevTex).
