The Influence of Physical Education on Self-Efficacy in Overweight Schoolgirls: A 12-Week Training Program
The purpose of this randomized controlled study was to investigate the impact of a 12- week physical education (PE) program on the self-efficacy of overweight schoolgirls. We randomly assigned 60 overweight schoolgirls (15â17 years) to either an experimental moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise (âŒ90 min, three times a week) group (n = 30) or a control group (CG) (n = 30) that received non-specific regular PE lessons with activities chosen by the curricular teacher mainly focused on team games and sports skills that aimed to achieve general psycho-physical wellness (âŒ90 min, three times a week). To assess the starting level of students and significant changes reached, at baseline and after training, a battery of standardized assessment motor tests and a psychometric scale (generalized self-efficacy scale, GES) were administered. At the end of the intervention, the experimental group reported a considerable decrease in body mass index (BMI) and a large improvement in self-efficacy (p < 0.001). No significant changes were found in the CG. The results suggested that the 12-week moderate to a vigorous aerobic exercise program is an effective weight loss intervention and a vehicle to promote a range of outcomes important to the qualitative growth of adolescents. In fact, it could provide a positive and significant impact on the self-efficacy of overweight schoolgirls
Generalized phonon-assisted Zener tunneling in indirect semiconductors with non-uniform electric fields : a rigorous approach
A general framework to calculate the Zener current in an indirect
semiconductor with an externally applied potential is provided. Assuming a
parabolic valence and conduction band dispersion, the semiconductor is in
equilibrium in the presence of the external field as long as the electronphonon
interaction is absent. The linear response to the electron-phonon interaction
results in a non-equilibrium system. The Zener tunneling current is calculated
from the number of electrons making the transition from valence to conduction
band per unit time. A convenient expression based on the single particle
spectral functions is provided, enabling the numerical calculation of the Zener
current under any three-dimensional potential profile. For a one dimensional
potential profile an analytical expression is obtained for the current in a
bulk semiconductor, a semiconductor under uniform field and a semiconductor
under a non-uniform field using the WKB (Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin)
approximation. The obtained results agree with the Kane result in the low field
limit. A numerical example for abrupt p - n diodes with different doping
concentrations is given, from which it can be seen that the uniform field model
is a better approximation than the WKB model but a direct numerical treatment

The graceful exit from the anomaly-induced inflation: Supersymmetry as a key
The stable version of the anomaly-induced inflation does not need a fine
tuning and leads to sufficient expansion of the Universe. The non-stable
version (Starobinsky model) provides the graceful exit to the FRW phase. We

The role of parental involvement in youth sport experience: perceived and desired behavior by male soccer players
Parents play a key role in the youth sports educational experience. They are responsible for the introduction of their children to physical or sporting education and their involvement has been associated with sport participation in early stages. The aims of this cross-sectional study were, first, to assess the perceived and desired parental involvement by children and, secondly, to exam-ine their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with any specific behavior. 80 male soccer players filled the Parental Involvement in Sport Questionnaire (PISQ) before or after a training session in presence of a coach. PISQ results revealed excessive active involvement and pressure, insufficient praise and understanding and satisfactory directive behavior from childrenâs parents. Our findings suggest that excessive parental involvement can cause pressure on children who would prefer parental participation characterized by praise and understanding. A balance between a supporting involvement without putting too much pressure is needed by the parents. To prevent burnout and dropout and to facilitate future practice, parents should be counseled (possibly by a sport educator) on how to positively support their children concerning their sport experience
Which physical activity in patients affected by hypoparathyroidism? A review of the literature and practical recommendations
Background Hypoparathyroidism (HypoP) is a rare endocrine condition characterized by hypocalcaemia and hyperphos- phatemia, as a consequence of absent or improperly low parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. Patients affected by HypoP have a clinical condition often characterized by paresthesias and muscle spasms, as well as long-term consequences as nephro- lithiasis, extraskeletal calcification, and fractures. In the literature, likely due to these symptoms, few data exist regarding the appropriate physical activity (PA) in subjects suffering from HypoP.
Purpose This review evaluates the literature on exercise-based approaches to the management of individuals affected by HypoP and evaluates: (1) the effects of physical exercise on muscle cramps and other clinical symptoms; (2) the effects of exercise on PTH and calcium level; (3) the most suitable clinical exercise testing; and (4) the most suitable exercise combination.
Methods and results A systematic search was conducted using the databases MEDLINE, Google Scholar using âhypopar- athyroidism AND Physical Activityâ, âTraining AND hypoparathyroidismâ, âExercise AND muscle crampsâ, âExercise AND Fatigueâ as keywords. In addition, references list from the included articles were searched and cross-checked to identify any further potentially eligible studies. A total of 50 manuscripts were found among which 39 manuscripts were selected. A few clinical studies have been performed in HypoP patients to evaluate PA training protocols.
Conclusion Although further research is needed to draw solid conclusions regarding best PA protocols in subjects affected by HypoP, a PA protocol has been proposed within the manuscript to encourage patients to attempt exercise to improve their clinical conditions and their quality of life
Hepatobiliary disease resection in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer: prognostic role and optimal cytoreduction
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety in terms of prognostic significance and perioperative morbidity and mortality of cytoreduction in patients affected by advance ovarian cancer and hepato-biliary metastasis. Methods: Patients with a least one hepatobiliary metastasis who have undergone surgical treatment with curative intent of were considered for the study. Perioperative complications were evaluated and graded with Accordion severity Classification. Five-year PFS and OS were estimated using the KaplanâMeier curve. Results: Sixty-seven (20.9%) patients had at least one metastasis to the liver, biliary tract, or porta hepatis. Forty-four (65.7%) and 23 (34.3%) patients underwent respectively high and intermediate complexity surgery according. Complete cytoreduction was achieved in 48 (71.6%) patients with hepato-biliary disease. In two patients (2.9%) severe complications related to hepatobiliary surgery were reported. The median PFS for the patients with hepato-biliary involvement (RT = 0 vs. RT > 0) was 19 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 16.2â21.8] and 8 months (95% CI 6.1â9.9). The median OS for the patients with hepato-biliary involvement (RT = 0 vs. RT > 0) 45 months (95% CI 21.2â68.8 months) and 23 months (95% CI 13.9â32.03). Conclusions: Hepatobiliary involvement is often associated with high tumor load and could require high complex multivisceral surgery. In selected patients complete cytoreduction could offer survival benefits. Morbidity related to hepatobiliary procedures is acceptable. Careful evaluation of patients and multidisciplinary approach in referral centers is mandatory
An exact self-consistent gravitational shock wave in semiclassical gravity
We find a self-consistent pp-gravitational shock wave solution to the
semiclassical Einstein equations resulting from the approach to the
effective action. We model the renormalized matter stress-energy-momentum
tensor by massless scalar fields in the Minkowski vacuum plus a classical
particle. We show that quantum effects generate a milder singularity at the
position of the particle than the classical solution, but the singularity does
not disappear. At large distances from the particle, the quantum correction
decreases slowly, as ( being the distance to the particle in
the shock wave plane). We argue that this large distance correction is a
