Zeolite-dye micro lasers
We present a new class of micro lasers based on nanoporous molecular sieve
host-guest systems. Organic dye guest molecules of
1-Ethyl-4-(4-(p-Dimethylaminophenyl)-1,3-butadienyl)-pyridinium Perchlorat were
inserted into the 0.73-nm-wide channel pores of a zeolite AlPO-5 host. The
zeolitic micro crystal compounds where hydrothermally synthesized according to
a particular host-guest chemical process. The dye molecules are found not only
to be aligned along the host channel axis, but to be oriented as well. Single
mode laser emission at 687 nm was obtained from a whispering gallery mode
oscillating in a 8-m-diameter monolithic micro resonator, in which the
field is confined by total internal reflection at the natural hexagonal
boundaries inside the zeolitic microcrystals.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Internet-based Self-Assessment after the Tsunami: lessons learned
BACKGROUND: In the aftermath of the Tsunami disaster in 2004, an online psychological self-assessment (ONSET) was developed and made available by the University of Zurich in order to provide an online screening instrument for Tsunami victims to test if they were traumatized and in need of mental health care. The objective of the study was to report the lessons learnt that were made using an Internet-based, self-screening instrument after a large-scale disaster and to discuss its outreach and usefulness.
METHODS: Users of the online self-assessment decided after finishing the procedure whether their dataset could be used for quality control and scientific evaluation Their answers were stored anonymously only if they consented (which was the case in 88% of the sample), stratified analyses according to level of exposure were conducted.
RESULTS: A total of 2,914 adult users gave their consent for analysis of the screenings. Almost three quarter of the sample filled out the ONSET questionnaire within the first four weeks. Forty-one percent of the users reported direct exposure to the Tsunami disaster. Users who were injured by the Tsunami and users who reported dead or injured family members showed the highest degree of PTSD symptoms.
CONCLUSION: ONSET was used by a large number of subjects who thought to be affected by the catastrophe in order to help them decide if they needed to see a mental health professional. Furthermore, men more frequently accessed the instrument than women, indicating that Internet-based testing facilitates reaching out to a different group of people than "ordinary" public mental health strategies
Tunable Porous Organic Crystals: Structural Scope and Adsorption Properties of Nanoporous Steroidal Ureas
Previous work has shown that certain steroidal bis-(N-phenyl)ureas, derived from cholic acid, form crystals in the P61 space group with unusually wide unidimensional pores. A key feature of the nanoporous steroidal urea (NPSU) structure is that groups at either end of the steroid are directed into the channels and may in principle be altered without disturbing the crystal packing. Herein we report an expanded study of this system, which increases the structural variety of NPSUs and also examines their inclusion properties. Nineteen new NPSU crystal structures are described, to add to the six which were previously reported. The materials show wide variations in channel size, shape, and chemical nature. Minimum pore diameters vary from âŒ0 up to 13.1 Ă
, while some of the interior surfaces are markedly corrugated. Several variants possess functional groups positioned in the channels with potential to interact with guest molecules. Inclusion studies were performed using a relatively accessible tris-(N-phenyl)urea. Solvent removal was possible without crystal degradation, and gas adsorption could be demonstrated. Organic molecules ranging from simple aromatics (e.g., aniline and chlorobenzene) to the much larger squalene (Mw = 411) could be adsorbed from the liquid state, while several dyes were taken up from solutions in ether. Some dyes gave dichroic complexes, implying alignment of the chromophores in the NPSU channels. Notably, these complexes were formed by direct adsorption rather than cocrystallization, emphasizing the unusually robust nature of these organic molecular hosts
21-O-04-Potential microlasers based on AlPO4-5/DCM composites
This chapter discusses potential microlasers based on aluminium phosphate (AlPO4)-5/4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-p-dimethylaminostyryl-4H-pyran (DCM) composites. Through in situ inclusion, perfect hexagonal grown AlPO4-5 crystals are loaded with the laser dye DCM. The highest dye concentration is located in the middle of the crystals decreasing to the ends, showing that the dye is included in the early times of crystals growth. As DCM exceeds the pore diameter of AlPO4-5, mesopores are induced during incorporation. Spectroscopic investigations prove the alignment of the dye molecules within the one-dimensional channel system of the AFI structure. DCM also undergoes transâcis photoisomerization. As spectra of DCM in A1PO4-5 indicate the presence of another absorbing species, it is suggested that a mixture of trans and cis DCM is present in the pores
