Calibration of sealed HCl cells used for TCCON instrumental line shape monitoring
The TCCON (Total Carbon Column Observing
Network) FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) network
provides highly accurate observations of greenhouse gas
column-averaged dry-air mole fractions. As an important
component of TCCON quality assurance, sealed cells filled
with approximately 5 mbar of HCl are used for instrumental
line shape (ILS) monitoring at all TCCON sites. Here,
we introduce a calibration procedure for the HCl cells which
employs a refillable, pressure-monitored reference cell filled
with C_2H_2. Using this method, we identify variations of HCl
purity between the TCCON cells as a non-negligible disturbance.
The new calibration procedure introduced here assigns
effective pressure values to each individual cell to account
for additional broadening of the HCl lines. This approach
will improve the consistency of the network by significantly
reducing possible station-to-station biases due to
inconsistent ILS results from different HCl cells. We demonstrate
that the proposed method is accurate enough to turn the
ILS uncertainty into an error source of secondary importance
from the viewpoint of network consistency
Finite element analysis enhanced with subdivision surface boundary representations
In this work we develop a design-through-analysis methodology by extending the concept of the NURBS-enhanced finite element method (NEFEM) to volumes bounded by Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. The representation of the boundary as a single watertight manifold facilitates the generation of an external curved triangular mesh, which is subsequently used to generate the interior volumetric mesh. Following the NEFEM framework, the basis functions are defined in the physical space and the numerical integration is realized with a special mapping which takes into account the exact definition of the boundary. Furthermore, an appropriate quadrature strategy is proposed to deal with the integration of elements adjacent to extraordinary vertices (EVs). Both theoretical and practical aspects of the implementation are discussed and are supported with numerical examples.</p
Dihydrolipoic acid reduces cytochrome b561 proteins.
Cytochrome b561 (Cyt-b561) proteins constitute a family of trans-membrane proteins that are present in a wide variety of organisms. Two of their characteristic properties are the reducibility by ascorbate (ASC) and the presence of two distinct b-type hemes localized on two opposite sides of the membrane. Here we show that the tonoplast-localized and the putative tumor suppressor Cyt-b561 proteins can be reduced by other reductants than ASC and dithionite. A detailed spectral analysis of the ASC-dependent and dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA)-dependent reduction of these two Cyt-b561 proteins is also presented. Our results are discussed in relation to the known antioxidant capability of DHLA as well as its role in the regeneration of other antioxidant compounds of cells. These results allow us to speculate on new biological functions for the trans-membrane Cyt-b561 proteins
The serious games ecosystem: Interdisciplinary and intercontextual praxis
This chapter will situate academia in relation to serious games commercial production and contextual adoption, and vice-versa. As a researcher it is critical to recognize that academic research of serious games does not occur in a vaccum. Direct partnerships between universities and commercial organizations are increasingly common, as well as between research institutes and the contexts that their serious games are deployed in. Commercial production of serious games and their increased adoption in non-commercial contexts will influence academic research through emerging impact pathways and funding opportunities. Adding further complexity is the emergence of commercial organizations that undertake their own research, and research institutes that have inhouse commercial arms. To conclude, we explore how these issues affect the individual researcher, and offer considerations for future academic and industry serious games projects
Seven HCI Grand Challenges
This article aims to investigate the Grand Challenges which arise in the current and emerging landscape of rapid technological evolution towards more intelligent interactive technologies, coupled with increased and widened societal needs, as well as individual and collective expectations that HCI, as a discipline, is called upon to address. A perspective oriented to humane and social values is adopted, formulating the challenges in terms of the impact of emerging intelligent interactive technologies on human life both at the individual and societal levels. Seven Grand Challenges are identified and presented in this article: Human-Technology Symbiosis; Human-Environment Interactions; Ethics, Privacy and Security; Well-being, Health and Eudaimonia; Accessibility and Universal Access; Learning and Creativity; and Social Organization and Democracy. Although not exhaustive, they summarize the views and research priorities of an international interdisciplinary group of experts, reflecting different scientific perspectives, methodological approaches and application domains. Each identified Grand Challenge is analyzed in terms of: concept and problem definition; main research issues involved and state of the art; and associated emerging requirements
Modifying effect of dual antiplatelet therapy on incidence of stent thrombosis according to implanted drug-eluting stent type
Aim To investigate the putative modifying effect of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) use on the incidence of stent thrombosis at 3 years in patients randomized to Endeavor zotarolimus-eluting stent (E-ZES) or Cypher sirolimus-eluting stent (C-SES). Methods and results Of 8709 patients in PROTECT, 4357 were randomized to E-ZES and 4352 to C-SES. Aspirin was to be given indefinitely, and clopidogrel/ticlopidine for ≥3 months or up to 12 months after implantation. Main outcome measures were definite or probable stent thrombosis at 3 years. Multivariable Cox regression analysis was applied, with stent type, DAPT, and their interaction as the main outcome determinants. Dual antiplatelet therapy adherence remained the same in the E-ZES and C-SES groups (79.6% at 1 year, 32.8% at 2 years, and 21.6% at 3 years). We observed a statistically significant (P = 0.0052) heterogeneity in treatment effect of stent type in relation to DAPT. In the absence of DAPT, stent thrombosis was lower with E-ZES vs. C-SES (adjusted hazard ratio 0.38, 95% confidence interval 0.19, 0.75; P = 0.0056). In the presence of DAPT, no difference was found (1.18; 0.79, 1.77; P = 0.43). Conclusion A strong interaction was observed between drug-eluting stent type and DAPT use, most likely prompted by the vascular healing response induced by the implanted DES system. These results suggest that the incidence of stent thrombosis in DES trials should not be evaluated independently of DAPT use, and the optimal duration of DAPT will likely depend upon stent type (Clinicaltrials.gov number NCT00476957

This paper explores the implications of Unified Growth Theory for the origins of existing differences in income per capita across countries. The theory sheds light on three fundamental layers of comparative development. It identifies the factors that have governed the pace of the transition from stagnation to growth and have thus contributed to contemporary variation in economic development. It uncovers the forces that have sparked the emergence of multiple growth regimes and convergence clubs, and it underlines the persistent effects that variations in pre-historical biogeographical conditions have generated on the composition of human capital and economic development across the globe
