    Multiband superconductivity in the heavy fermion compound PrOs4Sb12

    The thermal conductivity of the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 was measured down to Tc/40 throughout the vortex state. At lowest temperatures and for magnetic fields H ~ 0.07Hc2, already 40% of the normal state thermal conductivity is restored. This behaviour (similar to that observed in MgB2) is a clear signature of multiband superconductivity in this compound.Comment: 12pages, version #1 20\_06\_200

    The Polarized H and D Atomic Beam Source for ANKE at COSY-J\"ulich

    A polarized atomic beam source was developed for the polarized internal storage-cell gas target at the magnet spectrometer ANKE of COSY-J\"ulich. The intensities of the beams injected into the storage cell, measured with a compression tube, are 7.510167.5\cdot 10^{16} hydrogen atoms/s (two hyperfine states) and 3.910163.9\cdot 10^{16} deuterium atoms/s (three hyperfine states). For the hydrogen beam the achieved vector polarizations are pz±0.92p_{\rm z}\approx\pm0.92. For the deuterium beam, the obtained combinations of vector and tensor (pzzp_{\rm zz}) polarizations are pz±0.90p_{\rm z}\approx\pm 0.90 (with a constant pzz+0.86p_{\rm zz}\approx +0.86), and pzz=+0.90p_{\rm zz}=+0.90 or pzz=1.71p_{\rm zz}=-1.71 (both with vanishing pzp_{\rm z}).     Heavy Meson Production in NN Collisions with Polarized Beam and Target -- A new facility for COSY

    The study of near--threshold meson production in pp and pd collisions involving polarized beams and polarized targets offers the rare opportunity to gain insight into short--range features of the nucleon--nucleon interaction. The Cooler Synchrotron COSY at FZ--J\"ulich is a unique environment to perform such studies. Measurements of polarization observables require a cylindrically symmetrical detector, capable to measure the momenta and the directions of outgoing charged hadrons. The wide energy range of COSY leads to momenta of outgoing protons to be detected in a single meson production reaction between 300 and 2500 MeV/c. Scattering angles of protons to be covered extend to about 4545^{\circ} in the laboratory system. An azimuthal angular coverage of the device around 98% seems technically achievable.     Singlet-to-triplet ratio in the deuteron breakup reaction pdpnppd\to pnp at 585 MeV

    Available experimental data on the exclusive pdpnppd\to pnp reaction at 585 MeV show a narrow peak in the proton-neutron final-state interaction region. It was supposed previously, on the basis of a phenomenological analysis of the shape of this peak, that the final spin-singlet pnpn state provided about one third of the observed cross section. By comparing the absolute value of the measured cross section with that of pdpd elastic scattering using the F\"aldt-Wilkin extrapolation theorem, it is shown here that the pdpnppd\to pnp data can be explained mainly by the spin-triplet final state with a singlet admixture of a few percent. The smallness of the singlet contribution is compatible with existing pNpNπpN\to pN\pi data and the one-pion exchange mechanism of the pdpnppd\to pnp reaction.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, 2 Postscript figure

    Acquisition and functional consequences of social knowledge in macaques

    To manoeuvre in complex societies, it is beneficial to acquire knowledge about the social relationships existing among group mates, so as to better predict their behaviour. Although such knowledge has been firmly established in a variety of animal taxa, how animals acquire such knowledge, as well as its functional significance, remains poorly understood. In order to understand how primates acquire and use their social knowledge, we studied kin-biased redirected aggression in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) relying on a large database of over 15 000 aggressive episodes. Confirming previous research, macaques redirected aggression preferentially to the kin of their aggressor. An analysis that controlled for the rate of affiliation between aggressors and targets of redirection showed that macaques identified the relatives of group mates on the basis of the frequency of their ongoing associations. By contrast, having observed group mates interact with their mother as infants did not increase the monkeys’ success in correctly identifying kin relationships among third parties. Inter-individual variation in the successful identification of the kin of aggressors and in redirecting aggression accordingly translated into differences in the amount of aggression received, highlighting a selective advantage for those individuals that were better able to acquire and use social knowledge

    c axis electrical transport at the metamagnetic transition in the heavy-fermion superconductor UTe2 under pressure

    The electrical resistivity of the unconventional superconductor UTe2_2 shows very anisotropic behavior in the normal state depending on the current direction. In the present paper we show that the maximum in the resistivity ρc\rho_c for current applied along the cc axis at Tρcmax14.75T^{\rm max}_{\rho_c} \approx 14.75~K follows the minimum in the thermal expansion TαT_\alpha^\star along bb axis. Under a magnetic field applied along the bb axis, TρcmaxT^{\rm max}_{\rho_c} can be tracked up to the critical point of the first order metamagnetic transition, which is located near 6~K and 34.5~T. Surprisingly, at the metamagnetic field HmH_m the resistivity ρc\rho_c shows a steplike decrease while the resistivities ρa\rho_a and ρb\rho_b, for current along the aa and bb axis, respectively, show a steplike increase. Under hydrostatic pressure TρcmaxT^{\rm max}_{\rho_c} and HmH_m decrease significantly up to the critical pressure pcp_c at which superconductivity is suppressed and a long range antiferromagnetic order appears. We show that the phase diagram at different pressures can be scaled by TρcmaxT^{\rm max}_{\rho_c} in field and temperature suggesting that this temperature scale is governing the main interactions in the normal state.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figure
