The role of desire thinking in the problematic use of social networking sites among adults.

The problematic use of social networking sites (SNS) is associated with several psychiatric disorders. This behavior closely resembles addiction in terms of neurological basis and behavioral patterns. Nevertheless, successful intervention strategies and the etiology of problematic SNS use are not yet thoroughly investigated. We aimed to study whether desire thinking is associated with problematic SNS use among adults when controlling for some confounders, including boredom, affect, and impulsivity. With the help of convenience sampling, we enrolled 546 Turkish adults in this study to whom we administered a sociodemographic form, the Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS), the Leisure Boredom Scale (LBS), the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), and the Desire Thinking Questionnaire (DTQ). To explore the association between the variables, we performed Pearson correlational and hierarchical regression analyses. The results showed that higher scores on two sub-dimensions of desire thinking, namely verbal perseveration and imaginal prefiguration, were associated with higher scores on problematic SNS use after we controlled for boredom, affect, and impulsivity. This study demonstrates that desire thinking may play a role in problematic SNS use among adults. We recommend targeting desire thinking as a potential area in treatments which may help alleviate problematic SNS use. [Abstract copyright: © 2022 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Düzlem Dışı Harmonik Yük Etkisinde İkili Silindirik Oyuk İçeren Yarım-Uzayın Davranışı

Oyuklar farklı yarıçaplarda olup, aralarındaki mesafe değişkendir. Her iki oyuk merkezinin de serbest yüzeye olan uzaklığı eşittir. Birinci oyuk iç yüzeyi düzlem dışı harmonik yük etkisinde iken ikinci oyuğun iç yüzeyi serbesttir. Dalga fonksiyonu açılım tekniği kullanılarak yer değiştirme alanları Fourier-Bessel serileri ile ifade edilmiştir. Kutupsal koordinat takımlarının kullanılması ile oyuk yüzeyindeki sınır koşulları doğrudan sağlatılmıştır. Serbest yüzeydeki sınır koşulu da yansıma tekniği kullanılarak sağlatılmıştır. Sayısal sonuç kısmında ikinci oyuk yarıçapının ve oyuklar arasındaki mesafenin, birinci oyuk yüzeyindeki dairesel gerilmeye olan etkileri gösterilmiştir. Cavities have different radius and the distance between centers of the cavities varies. Cavity centers are at the same depth. First cavities inner surfaces is subjected to out-of-plane harmonic force whereas second cavities inner surface is stress-free. By using wave function expansion method, displacement fields are expressed in terms of Fourier-Bessel series. Boundary conditions at cavity surfaces are satisfied directly when polar coordinates are used. Boundary condition at flat surface is satisfied by imaging technique. In numerical results, the effect of second cavities radius and the distance between cavity centers on circumferential stress at first cavities surface is demonstrated. The statistical convergence is defined for sequences with the asymptotic density on the natural numbers, in general. In this paper, we introduce the statistical convergence in vector lattices by using the finite additive measures on directed sets. Moreover, we give some relations between the statistical convergence and the lattice properties such as the order convergence and lattice operators

Batı’nın Bir Ötekisi Olarak İslam ve Müslümanlar: Batı Avrupa Medyasında İslamofobinin Temsili

Günümüzde sıkça kullanılan ve görece yeni bir kavram olan İslamofobi, anlam olarak bir korkuya karşılık gelse de bu kavram temelde, Batı için tehdit oluşturan İslam’a dair antipatiyi/nefreti ifade etmektedir. İslamofobinin temelinde birçok neden yatmaktadır. Bunlar arasında teolojik, kültürel, ekonomik, politik gibi pek çok nedenin yanı sıra oryantalizm ile günümüzde Müslümanlarla doğrudan ilişkilendirilen terör bulunmaktadır. Batı Avrupa eksenli olan bu çalışmada Müslüman nüfusun en fazla olduğu Fransa, Almanya ve İngiltere basını seçilmiştir. Bu ülkelerin basınından sağ ve sol görüşü temsilen ikişer gazete seçilmiş, İslam ve Müslümanlarla ilgili haberlerde İslamofobinin nasıl inşa edildiği karşılaştırmalı bir şekilde ortaya konmuştur. Seçilen haberler, van Dijk’ın haber metinleri için geliştirdiği eleştirel söylem analizine göre çözümlenmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucuna göre, eğer Müslümanlar, herhangi bir olay veya kararın öznesi durumundaysa ya doğrudan negatif olarak temsil edilmekte ya da olumsuz argümanlarla ilişkilendirilerek dolaylı olarak negatif bir şekilde temsil edilmektedir. Fakat Müslümanlar bir olayın parçası, yani edilgen bir konumda ise Müslümanlar için genelde ya kurbanlaştırıcı dramatik bir söylem üretilmekte ya da onlar minimize edilmekte veya yok sayılmaktadır

Traces of Western Philosophy in the Media’s Islamophobia Discourse

Islamophobia, which started with the first emergence of Islam but has become a common concept, especially after the September 11 attacks, is one of the most common forms of discrimination that Muslims are subjected to today. Although it means fear of Islam, Islamophobia refers to unfounded fear. The media plays an important role in spreading and reinforcing this fear or prejudice. Islamophobia, which is usually dealt with on a theological basis in the studies carried out, actually has philosophical foundations and this has a more ancient history than theological foundations. So much so that when we look at the anti-Islamic content produced in the media, it is seen that there is a great similarity with the descriptions in Western philosophy. For example, in addition to similar depictions such as Islam being a "religion of the sword", which is constantly associated with terror, the fact that Islam is a religion that emerged from Eastern society has led to a philosophical depiction mixed with orientalist images. This study, in which the document analysis method is used, reveals that the Islamophobic discourses and representations produced by today's Western mainstream media organizations are very similar to the depictions and judgments about Islam and Muslims from the Medieval philosophy to the period of Western thought from the Age to the period of Western thought

Türkiye’de İletişim Kuramının Öncülerinden: Ünsal Oskay ve Eserleri

Ünsal Oskay, Türkiye’de iletişim alanında ilk doktora tezini yazan isimlerden birisidir. Kitle iletişim kuramlarının Türkiye’de öğrenilmesinde önemli rol oynayan Oskay’ın, kitle iletişimi ile ilgili ortaya koyduğu eserler onu iletişim alanında öncü kuramcılardan birisi haline getirmiştir. Ünsal Oskay, iletişimin yanı sıra eserlerinde çoğunlukla “toplumbilim” olarak ifade ettiği sosyoloji ile siyaset, hukuk gibi sosyal bilimlerin farkı alanlarından birçok eseri de Türkçeye kazandırmıştır. Yaklaşık kırk yılı bulan akademik hayatına on kitap, on beş çeviri kitap ile yüzlerce makale sığdıran Ünsal Oskay, binlerce öğrenci yetiştirmiştir. Oskay, eleştirel sosyal teorinin benimsenmesindeki çabalarıyla, tüm sosyal bilim camiasında her zaman görüşleriyle göz önünde bulundurulması gereken bir isim olmuştur. Bir veri toplama tekniği olan doküman analizinin kullanıldığı bu çalışmada, Oskay’ın kitap, çevirileri ve makalelerinden oluşan tabir-i caizse külliyatının bir panoraması ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Sonuç olarak Oskay, 1960’larda (Ankara Üniversitesi’nde asistan iken) daha çok toplumbilim temalı eserleri Türkçe’ye kazandırırken, kendi kaleme aldığı makaleleri ise iletişim alanından uzaktır. En çok eseri doçent olduğu 1982 yılında veren Oskay’ın çalışmaları teorik olup, ampirik bir çalışması bulunmamaktadır

Turkish Accession and Defining the Boundaries of Nationalism and Supranationalism: Discourses in the European Commission

The European Union in general and the European Commission in particular are characterised by supranational governance. The enlargement policy gives the Commission the opportunity to export and promote supranational norms and define the boundaries of Europe as a supranational polity through the conditionality of membership and intensive contact with the candidate countries. This article analyses the discourses of the Commission on Turkey and gives us insights into how well Turkey fits the supranational model in the eyes of Commission officials. It demonstrates how the boundaries of supranationalism are set and even challenged by the prospects of Turkey’s accession

Modeling interestingness of streaming classification rules as a classification problem

Inducing classification rules on domains from which information is gathered at regular periods lead the number of such classification rules to be generally so huge that selection of interesting ones among all discovered rules becomes an important task. At each period, using the newly gathered information from the domain, the new classification rules are induced. Therefore, these rules stream through time and are so called streaming classification rules. In this paper, an interactive classification rules' interestingness learning algorithm (ICRIL) is developed to automatically label the classification rules either as "interesting" or "uninteresting" with limited user interaction. In our study, VFFP (Voting Fuzzified Feature Projections), a feature projection based incremental classification algorithm, is also developed in the framework of ICRIL. The concept description learned by the VFFP is the interestingness concept of streaming classification rules. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006
