3-pt Statistics of Cosmological Stochastic Gravitational Waves
We consider the 3-pt function (i.e. the bispectrum or non-Gaussianity) for
stochastic backgrounds of gravitational waves. We estimate the amplitude of
this signal for the primordial inflationary background, gravitational waves
generated during preheating, and for gravitational waves produced by
self-ordering scalar fields following a global phase transition. To assess
detectability, we describe how to extract the 3-pt signal from an idealized
interferometric experiment and compute the signal to noise ratio as a function
of integration time. The 3-pt signal for the stochastic gravitational wave
background generated by inflation is unsurprisingly tiny. For gravitational
radiation generated by purely causal, classical mechanisms we find that, no
matter how non-linear the process is, the 3-pt correlations produced vanish in
direct detection experiments. On the other hand, we show that in scenarios
where the B-mode of the CMB is sourced by gravitational waves generated by a
global phase transition, a strong 3-pt signal among the polarization modes
could also be produced. This may provide another method of distinguishing
inflationary B-modes. To carry out this computation, we have developed a
diagrammatic approach to the calculation of stochastic gravitational waves
sourced by scalar fluids, which has applications beyond the present scenario.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
Choreography, controversy and child sex abuse: Theoretical reflections on a cultural criminological analysis of dance in a pop music video
This article was inspired by the controversy over claims of ‘pedophilia!!!!’ undertones and the ‘triggering’ of memories of childhood sexual abuse in some viewers by the dance performance featured in the music video for Sia’s ‘Elastic Heart’ (2015). The case is presented for acknowledging the hidden and/or overlooked presence of dance in social scientific theory and cultural studies and how these can enhance and advance cultural criminological research. Examples of how these insights have been used within other disciplinary frameworks to analyse and address child sex crime and sexual trauma are provided, and the argument is made that popular cultural texts such as dance in pop music videos should be regarded as significant in analysing and tracing public perceptions and epistemologies of crimes such as child sex abuse
Constraining holographic inflation with WMAP
In a class of recently proposed models, the early universe is strongly
coupled and described holographically by a three-dimensional, weakly coupled,
super-renormalizable quantum field theory. This scenario leads to a power
spectrum of scalar perturbations that differs from the usual empirical LCDM
form and the predictions of generic models of single field, slow roll
inflation. This spectrum is characterized by two parameters: an amplitude, and
a parameter g related to the coupling constant of the dual theory. We estimate
these parameters, using WMAP and other astrophysical data. We compute Bayesian
evidence for both the holographic model and standard LCDM and find that their
difference is not significant, although LCDM provides a somewhat better fit to
the data. However, it appears that Planck will permit a definitive test of this

Probing the primordial power spectra with inflationary priors
We investigate constraints on power spectra of the primordial curvature and
tensor perturbations with priors based on single-field slow-roll inflation
models. We stochastically draw the Hubble slow-roll parameters and generate the
primordial power spectra using the inflationary flow equations. Using data from
recent observations of CMB and several measurements of geometrical distances in
the late Universe, Bayesian parameter estimation and model selection are
performed for models that have separate priors on the slow-roll parameters. The
same analysis is also performed adopting the standard parameterization of the
primordial power spectra. We confirmed that the scale-invariant
Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum is disfavored with increased significance from
previous studies. While current observations appear to be optimally modeled
with some simple models of single-field slow-roll inflation, data is not enough

Higher Order Corrections to the Primordial Gravitational Wave Spectrum and its Impact on Parameter Estimates for Inflation
We study the impact of the use of the power series expression for the
primordial tensor spectrum on parameter estimation from future direct detection
gravitational wave experiments. The spectrum approximated by the power series
expansion may give large deviation from the true (fiducial) value when it is
normalized at CMB scale because of the large separation between CMB and direct
detection scales. We derive the coefficients of the higher order terms of the
expansion up to the sixth order within the framework of the slow-roll
approximation and investigate how well the inclusion of higher order terms
improves the analytic prediction of the spectrum amplitude by comparing with
numerical results. Using the power series expression, we consider future
constraints on inflationary parameters expected from direct detection
experiments of the inflationary gravitational wave background and show that the
truncation of the higher order terms can lead to incorrect evaluation of the
parameters. We present two example models; a quadratic chaotic inflation model

Male frequent attenders of general practice and their help seeking preferences
Background: Low rates of health service usage by men are commonly linked to masculine values and traditional male gender roles. However, not all men conform to these stereotypical notions of masculinity, with some men choosing to attend health services on a frequent basis, for a variety of different reasons. This study draws upon the accounts of male frequent attenders of the General Practitioner's (GP) surgery, examining their help-seeking preferences and their reasons for choosing services within general practice over other sources of support. Methods: The study extends thematic analysis of interview data from the Self Care in Primary Care study (SCinPC), a large scale multi-method evaluation study of a self care programme delivered to frequent attenders of general practice. Data were collected from 34 semi-structured interviews conducted with men prior to their exposure to the intervention. Results: The ages of interviewed men ranged from 16 to 72 years, and 91% of the sample (n= 31) stated that they had a current health condition. The thematic analysis exposed diverse perspectives within male help-seeking preferences and the decision-making behind men's choice of services. The study also draws attention to the large variation in men's knowledge of available health services, particularly alternatives to general practice. Furthermore, the data revealed some men's lack of confidence in existing alternatives to general practice. Conclusions: The study highlights the complex nature of male help-seeking preferences, and provides evidence that there should be no 'one size fits all' approach to male service provision. It also provides impetus for conducting further studies into this under researched area of interest. © 2011 WPMH GmbH
Unique contributions to the scalar bispectrum in `just enough inflation'
A scalar field rolling down a potential with a large initial velocity results
in inflation of a finite duration. Such a scenario suppresses the scalar power
on large scales improving the fit to the cosmological data. We find that the
scenario leads to a hitherto unexplored situation wherein the boundary terms
dominate the contributions to the scalar bispectrum over the bulk terms. We
show that the consistency relation governing the non-Gaussianity parameter
is violated on large scales and that the contributions at the

Loop Corrections to Cosmological Perturbations in Multi-field Inflationary Models
We investigate one-loop quantum corrections to the power spectrum of
adiabatic perturbation from entropy modes/adiabatic mode cross-interactions in
multiple DBI inflationary models. We find that due to the non-canonical kinetic
term in DBI models, the loop corrections are enhanced by slow-varying parameter
and small sound speed . Thus, in general the loop-corrections
in multi-DBI models can be large. Moreover, we find that the loop-corrections

Single-field inflation constraints from CMB and SDSS data
We present constraints on canonical single-field inflation derived from WMAP
five year, ACBAR, QUAD, BICEP data combined with the halo power spectrum from
SDSS LRG7. Models with a non-scale-invariant spectrum and a red tilt n_s < 1
are now preferred over the Harrison-Zel'dovich model (n_s = 1, tensor-to-scalar
ratio r = 0) at high significance. Assuming no running of the spectral indices,
we derive constraints on the parameters (n_s, r) and compare our results with
the predictions of simple inflationary models. The marginalised credible
intervals read n_s = 0.962^{+0.028}_{-0.026} and r < 0.17 (at 95% confidence
level). Interestingly, the 68% c.l. contours favour mainly models with a convex
potential in the observable region, but the quadratic potential model remains
inside the 95% c.l. contours. We demonstrate that these results are robust to
changes in the datasets considered and in the theoretical assumptions made. We
then consider a non-vanishing running of the spectral indices by employing
different methods, non-parametric but approximate, or parametric but exact.
With our combination of CMB and LSS data, running models are preferred over
power-law models only by a Delta chi^2 ~ 5.8, allowing inflationary stages
producing a sizable negative running -0.063^{+0.061}_{-0.049} and larger
tensor-scalar ratio r < 0.33 at the 95% c.l. This requires large values of the
third derivative of the inflaton potential within the observable range. We
derive bounds on this derivative under the assumption that the inflaton
potential can be approximated as a third order polynomial within the observable
