    Does The Force From an Extra Dimension Contradict Physics in 4D?

    Get PDF
    We examine the question of whether violation of 4D physics is an inevitable consequence of existence of an extra non-compactified dimension. Recent investigations in membrane and Kaluza-Klein theory indicate that when the metric of the spacetime is allowed to depend on the extra coordinate, i.e., the cilindricity condition is dropped, the equation describing the trajectory of a particle in one lower dimension has an extra force with some abnormal properties. Among them, a force term parallel to the four-velocity of the particle and, what is perhaps more surprising, uμfμ≠uμfμu_{\mu}f^{\mu} \neq u^{\mu}f_{\mu}. These properties violate basic concepts in 4D physics. In this paper we argue that these abnormal properties are {\em not} consequence of the extra dimension, but result from the formalism used. We propose a new definition for the force, from the extra dimension, which is free of any contradictions and consistent with usual 4D physics. We show, using warp-products metrics, that this new definition is also more consistent with our physical intuition. The effects of this force could be detected observing objects moving with high speed, near black holes and/or in cosmological situations.Comment: Minor addition in the Introduction to match the version to appear in Phys. I have made several innovations to Physics 114: Physics of Sound, a course for Communication Disorders and General Education students at the University of Massachusetts. These changes include the use of a network of wireless communication devices called a Personal Response System, on-line tutorials and classnotes, a collaborative discussion section, exam corrections, microthemes, extra-credit papers, group extra-credit projects, and the use of student teaching assistants

    Shortcuts in extra dimensions and neutrino physics

    Get PDF
    We discuss the possibility of sterile neutrinos taking shortcuts in extra dimensions, and the consequences for neutrino oscillations. This effect influences the active-sterile neutrino mixing and provides a possibility to accommodate the LSND evidence for neutrino oscillations together with bounds from accelerator and reactor experiments. We briefly comment on causality in such schemes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, talk presented by H. Paes at SUSY06, UC Irvine, C

    Searching for Extra Dimensions in the Early Universe

    Full text link
    We investigate extra spatial dimensions (D=3+ϵD = 3+\epsilon) in the early universe using very high resolution molecular rotational spectroscopic data derived from a large molecular cloud containing moderately cold carbon monoxide gas at Z ≈6.42\approx 6.42. It turns out that the ϵ\epsilon-dependent quantum mechanical wavelength transitions are solvable for a linear molecule and we present the solution here. The CO microwave data allows a very precise determination of =−0.00000657±.10003032 = -0.00000657 \pm .10003032. The probability that ≠0 \neq 0 is one in 7794, only 850 million years (using the standard cosmology) after the Big Bang.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Multiplet in Non-Adjoint Representations

    Full text link
    We formulate a theory for N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills multiplet in a non-adjoint representation R of SO(N) as an important application of our recently-proposed model for N=1 supersymmetry. This system is obtained by dimensional reduction from an N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills multiplet in non-adjoint representation in ten dimensions. The consistency with supersymmetry requires that the non-adjoint representation R with the indices i, j, ... satisfy the three conditions \eta^{i j} = \delta^{i j}, (T^I)^{i j} = - (T^I)^{j i} and (T^I)^{[ i j |} (T^I)^{| k ] l} = 0 for the metric \eta^{i j} and the generators T^I, which are the same as the N=1 case.Comment: 6 pages, no figures, accepted for publication in Phys.
