Measuring the Performance of Underplatform Dampers for Turbine Blades by Rotating Laser Doppler Vibrometer
Underplatform friction dampers are commonly used to control the vibration level of turbine blades in order to prevent high-cycle fatigue failures. Experimental validation of highly non-linear response predictions obtained from FEM bladed disk models incorporating underplatform dampers models, has proved to be very difficult so as the assessment of the performance of a chosen design. In this paper, the effect of wedgeshaped underplatform dampers on the dynamics of a simple bladed disk under rotating conditions is measured and the effect of the excitation level on the UPDs performances is investigated at different number of the engine order excitation nearby resonance frequencies of the 1st blade bending modes of the system. The measurements are performed with an improved configuration of a rotating test rig, designed with a noncontact magnetic excitation and a non-contact rotating SLDV measurement syste
On the Effectiveness of Using Only Eigenvalues in Structural Model Updating Problems
In this article the subject of model updating using the inverse eigensensitivity method that uses only eigenvalues in the calculation is examined. The problem of creating an underdetermined set of equations is studied and ways of preventing it are addressed
Measurement of Translational and Angular Vibration Using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer
An experimental procedure for obtaining angular and translational vibration in one measurement, using a continuously scanning laser Doppler vibrometer, is described. Sinusoidal scanning, in a straight line, enables one angular vibration component to be measured, but by circular scanning, two principal angular vibrations and their directions can be derived directly from the frequency response sidebands. Examples of measurements on a rigid cube are given. Processes of narrow-band random excitation and modal analysis are illustrated with reference to measurements on a freely suspended beam. Sideband frequency response references are obtained by using multiplied excitation force and mirror-drive signals
An Investigation of Complex Mode Shapes
This paper presents an investigation of complex mode shape analysis caused by non-linear damping. Nowadays, most academics are accustomed to complex mode shapes, which are a characteristic of most axisymmetric structures. The topic was deeply investigated during the 1980s, sparking the sharpest debates about their physical existence or not. However, after nearly three decades, one question still stands, do we know all about complex mode shapes? This paper takes the dust off this topic again and explores how complex eigenvectors arise when the percentage frequency separation between two mode shapes is the same order of magnitude as the percentage damping. The difference between the past and present investigations relates to the non-linear damping that might arise from joint dynamics under various vibration amplitudes. Hence, the new research question is about the investigation of amplitude-dependent damping on the modal complexity. Why bother? There are several engineering applications in both space and aerospace where axisymmetric structures and joint dynamics can impair the numerical analysis that is currently performed. This paper does not offer any solutions but does expand the research on an unsolved challenge by identifying the questions posed.</p
Fabrication and mechanical testing of a new sandwich structure with carbon fiber network core
The aim is the fabrication and mechanical testing of sandwich structures including a new core material known as fiber network sandwich materials. As fabrication norms for such a material do not exist as such, so the primary goal is to reproduce successfully fiber network sandwich specimens. Enhanced vibration testing diagnoses the quality of the fabrication process. These sandwich materials possess low structural strength as proved by the static tests (compression, bending), but the vibration test results give high damping values, making the material suitable for vibro-acoustic applications where structural strength is of secondary importance e.g., internal panelling of a helicopter
An international review of laser Doppler vibrometry:Making light work of vibration measurement
© 2016 In 1964, just a few years after the invention of the laser, a fluid velocity measurement based on the frequency shift of scattered light was made and the laser Doppler technique was born. This comprehensive review paper charts advances in the development and applications of laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) since those first pioneering experiments. Consideration is first given to the challenges that continue to be posed by laser speckle. Scanning LDV is introduced and its significant influence in the field of experimental modal analysis described. Applications in structural health monitoring and MEMS serve to demonstrate LDV's applicability on structures of all sizes. Rotor vibrations and hearing are explored as examples of the classic applications. Applications in acoustics recognise the versatility of LDV as demonstrated by visualisation of sound fields. The paper concludes with thoughts on future developments, using examples of new multi-component and multi-channel instruments
Nonlinear dynamic response and modeling of a bi-stable composite plate for applications to adaptive structures
This paper discusses the formulation and validation of a low order model to capture the dynamics of a bi-stable composite plate, focusing on the dynamics around its stable states. More specifically, the model aims to capture the complex nonlinear subharmonic behavior observed in the dynamic response of the plate. A system identification approach is used to derive simplified equations of motion for the system. Experimental frequency response diagrams are obtained to characterize the observed dynamics in the identification process. Simulations using the identified model are presented showing excellent agreement with the experimentally observed behavior. A theoretical validation of the model is carried out studying the stability of the modes where subharmonic response was observed. Stability boundaries were computed using averaging techniques showing good agreement with experimental results
