Group sizes of oribis in different habitats
Data collected on group sizes of the oribi Ourebia ourebi at midland elevations in Natal, South Africa, were compared with available data from montane (Drakensberg) and tropical (East Africa) grasslands. Mean group sizes were lowest in montane grassland and highest in tropical grassland. In the montane areas adults occurred mainly in pairs or as single animals, whereas small harem herds predominated in tropical grassland, while the organization at midland areas was intermediate. It is suggested that the social organization of the oribi is influenced by habitat suitability, and availability and quality of food during winter. This hypothesis is discussed in relation to the three areas considered
Some Bianchi Type III String Cosmological Models with Bulk Viscosity
We investigate the integrability of cosmic strings in Bianchi III space-time
in presence of a bulk viscous fluid by applying a new technique. The behaviour
of the model is reduced to the solution of a single second order nonlinear
differential equation. We show that this equation admits an infinite family of

A New Class of Inhomogeneous String Cosmological Models in General Relativity
A new class of solutions of Einstein field equations has been investigated
for inhomogeneous cylindrically symmetric space-time with string source. To get
the deterministic solution, it has been assumed that the expansion ()
in the model is proportional to the eigen value of the shear
tensor . Certain physical and geometric properties of the

Cylindrically Symmetric Inhomogeneous Universes with a Cloud of Strings
Cylindrically symmetric inhomogeneous string cosmological models are
investigated in presence of string fluid as a source of matter. To get the
three types of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations we assume , and . Some physical and geometric

Lyra's Cosmology of Massive String in Anisotropic Bianchi-II Space-time
The paper deals with a spatially homogeneous and totally anisotropic Bianchi
II cosmological models representing massive strings in normal gauge for Lyra's
manifold. The modified Einstein's field equations have been solved by applying
variation law for Hubble's parameter. This law generates two type of solutions
for average scale factor, one is of power law type and other is of exponential
law type. The power law describes the dynamics of Universe from big bang to
present epoch while exponential law seems reasonable to project dynamics of
future Universe. It has been found that the displacement actor is a
decreasing function of time and it approaches to small positive value at late
time, which is collaborated with Halford (1970) as well as recent observations
of SN Ia. The study reveals that massive strings dominate in early Universe and
eventually disappear from Universe for sufficiently large time, which is in

Composition of woody species in a dynamic forest-woodland-savannah mosaic in Uganda: implications for conservation and management
Forest¿woodland¿savannah mosaics are a common feature in the East African landscape. For the conservation of the woody species that occur in such landscapes, the species patterns and the factors that maintain it need to be understood. We studied the woody species distribution in a forest¿woodland¿savannah mosaic in Budongo Forest Reserve, Uganda. The existing vegetation gradients were analyzed using data from a total of 591 plots of 400 or 500 m2 each. Remotely sensed data was used to explore current vegetation cover and the gradients there in for the whole area. A clear species gradient exists in the study area ranging from forest, where there is least disturbance, to wooded grassland, where frequent fire disturbance occurs. Most species are not limited to a specific part of the gradient although many show a maximum abundance at some point along the gradient. Fire and accessibility to the protected area were closely related to variation in species composition along the ordination axis with species like Cynometra alexandri and Uvariopsis congensis occurring at one end of the gradient and Combretum guenzi and Lonchocarpus laxiflorus at the other. The vegetation cover classes identified in the area differed in diversity, density and, especially, basal area. All vegetation cover classes, except open woodland, had indicator species. Diospyros abyssinica, Uvariopsis congensis, Holoptelea grandis and all Celtis species were the indicator species for the forest class, Terminalia velutina and Albizia grandbracteata for closed woodland, Grewia mollis and Combretum mole for very open woodland and Lonchocarpus laxiflorus, Grewia bicolor and Combretum guenzi for the wooded grassland class. Eleven of the species occurred in all cover classes and most of the species that occurred in more than one vegetation cover class showed peak abundance in a specific cover class. Species composition in the study area changes gradually from forest to savannah. Along the gradient, the cover classes are distinguishable in terms of species composition and vegetation structure. These classes are, however, interrelated in species composition. For conservation of the full range of the species within this East African landscape, the mosaic has to be managed as an integrated whole. Burning should be varied over the area with the forest not being burnt at all and the wooded grassland burnt regularly.
