    Cheshire, Ohio: An American Coal Story in 3 Acts

    A gun toting 83-year old woman refuses to sell her house to the power plant next door. But despite her refusal, the plant has moved ahead with their 20 million dollar deal to buy out most of Cheshire and bulldoze all the homes. What happened in this Ohio River town overrun by one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the world? A story of money, power and the increasingly difficult choices we face surrounding coal and the environment, Cheshire, Ohio makes us think twice about home. Filmed over a decade, Cheshire, Ohio follows a community devastated by coal, starting with American Electric Power\u27s buyout and bulldozing of this Ohio River town after exposing them to years of harmful emissions, and then returning several years later to the now almost emptied town as we follow the case of 77 plaintiffs who have filed a lawsuit against American Electric Power for cancer and other diseases they developed from working unprotected at the plant\u27s coal ash landfill site. As the cycle of pollution from coal continues, we see how one town suffers from our reliance on carbon energy. The story is told by the people whose lives are most intimately affected and who are great characters and storytellers: from the 93 year old Gladys Rife who accepted the buyout but is allowed to stay until she dies; to Boots Hern, the gun toting widow who won’t sell out her home to the plant; to the Cochrans who mourn the loss of the town as they accept the buyout and move; to the young family who moved in recently for work but whose daughter suffers from asthma from living across from the plan; to Iva Sissen, a worker at the plant who is fighting ovarian cancer she believes was caused from unsafe exposure to the coal ash. These voices and others paint a complex and layered story of a quintessential American town in Appalachia devastated by this industry in a state that is considered a battleground in the “war on coal.” The film is 75 minutes in length.     Modelling the role of oral processing on in vivo aroma release of white rice: Conceptual model and experimental validation

    International audienceA conceptual model was developed to relate oral processing parameters and aroma release of cooked white rice. The conceptual model indicates that aroma release is dependent on the increase of particle surface area, the dilution effect of saliva and the diffusion of aroma from food residues that can be trapped in the buccal-pouches in the mouth. The model was validated against in vivo retro-nasal aroma release data during the consumption of rice flavoured with two aroma compounds (2-nonanone and ethyl propanoate) by five panellists. The oral processing behaviour of each subject was characterised at four different stages during oral processing by measuring bolus particle size, saliva content and the amount of residue particles that could be washed from the mouth after bolus expectoration. The results showed that aroma release for all subjects were dependent on the particle breakdown pathways used in oral processing. Subjects who reduced the rice to smaller particle sizes, higher pasted fraction and higher bolus residues had higher aroma release as expected from the conceptual model. Accounting for the physiological variables of subjects, the physicochemical parameters of aroma compounds and using a larger number of subjects in future studies will improve the model reliability

    Search for Scalar Diphoton Resonances in the Mass Range 6560065-600 GeV with the ATLAS Detector in pppp Collision Data at s\sqrt{s} = 8 TeVTeV

    A search for scalar particles decaying via narrow resonances into two photons in the mass range 65–600 GeV is performed using 20.3fb120.3\text{}\text{}{\mathrm{fb}}^{-1} of s=8TeV\sqrt{s}=8\text{}\text{}\mathrm{TeV} pppp collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The recently discovered Higgs boson is treated as a background. No significant evidence for an additional signal is observed. The results are presented as limits at the 95% confidence level on the production cross section of a scalar boson times branching ratio into two photons, in a fiducial volume where the reconstruction efficiency is approximately independent of the event topology. The upper limits set extend over a considerably wider mass range than previous searches

    Search for Higgs and ZZ Boson Decays to J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma and Υ(nS)γ\Upsilon(nS)\gamma with the ATLAS Detector

    A search for the decays of the Higgs and ZZ bosons to J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma and Υ(nS)γ\Upsilon(nS)\gamma (n=1,2,3n=1,2,3) is performed with pppp collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 20.3fb120.3\mathrm{fb}^{-1} collected at s=8TeV\sqrt{s}=8\mathrm{TeV} with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95% CL upper limits are placed on the branching fractions. In the J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma final state the limits are 1.5×1031.5\times10^{-3} and 2.6×1062.6\times10^{-6} for the Higgs and ZZ bosons, respectively, while in the Υ(1S,2S,3S)γ\Upsilon(1S,2S,3S)\,\gamma final states the limits are (1.3,1.9,1.3)×103(1.3,1.9,1.3)\times10^{-3} and (3.4,6.5,5.4)×106(3.4,6.5,5.4)\times10^{-6}, respectively

    Search for Scalar-Charm pair production in pp collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a dedicated search for pair production of scalar partners of charm quarks are reported. The search is based on an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb1^{-1} of pp collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is performed using events with large missing transverse momentum and at least two jets, where the two leading jets are each tagged as originating from c-quarks. Events containing isolated electrons or muons are vetoed. In an R-parity-conserving minimal supersymmetric scenario in which a single scalar-charm state is kinematically accessible, and where it decays exclusively into a charm quark and a neutralino, 95% confidence-level upper limits are obtained in the scalar-charm-neutralino mass plane such that, for neutralino masses below 200 GeV, scalar-charm masses up to 490 GeV are excluded
