An Innovative Workspace for The Cherenkov Telescope Array

    Get PDF
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an initiative to build the next generation, ground-based gamma-ray observatories. We present a prototype workspace developed at INAF that aims at providing innovative solutions for the CTA community. The workspace leverages open source technologies providing web access to a set of tools widely used by the CTA community. Two different user interaction models, connected to an authentication and authorization infrastructure, have been implemented in this workspace. The first one is a workflow management system accessed via a science gateway (based on the Liferay platform) and the second one is an interactive virtual desktop environment. The integrated workflow system allows to run applications used in astronomy and physics researches into distributed computing infrastructures (ranging from clusters to grids and clouds). The interactive desktop environment allows to use many software packages without any installation on local desktops exploiting their native graphical user interfaces. The science gateway and the interactive desktop environment are connected to the authentication and authorization infrastructure composed by a Shibboleth identity provider and a Grouper authorization solution. The Grouper released attributes are consumed by the science gateway to authorize the access to specific web resources and the role management mechanism in Liferay provides the attribute-role mapping

    Superfly Amphibian

Following a Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) mission profile, this seaplane is designed to carry 19 passengers and 1 flight crew with a range of 200 nautical miles. The seaplane is equipped with two turbo-prop engines and is economically comparable to current seaplanes in terms of servicing and operating expenses. The aircraft is capable of operating in remote locations with limited infrastructure due to its STOL abilities, allowing for increased access to difficult-to-reach areas. The seaplane\u27s design incorporates modern materials and technologies to enhance efficiency, safety, and comfort for passengers and crew. The aircraft\u27s versatility and cost-effectiveness make it an attractive option for regional air transportation, tourism, and other applications

Ka-Band Diplexer for 5G mmWave Applications in Inverted Microstrip Gap Waveguide Technology

This article belongs to the Special Issue Millimeter and Terahertz Wireless CommunicationsA new cost-efficient, low-loss Ka-band diplexer designed in inverted microstrip gap waveguide technology is presented in this paper. Gap waveguide allows to propagate quasi-TEM modes in the air between two metal plates without the need for contact between them by using periodic metasurfaces. The diplexer is realized by using a bed of nails as AMC (Artificial Magnetic Conductor), first modeled with a PMC (Perfect Magnetic Conductor) surface for design simplification, and two fifth order end-coupled passband filters (BPFs) along with a power divider. The experimental verification confirms that the two channels centered at 24 GHz and 28 GHz with 1 GHz of bandwidth show measured insertion losses of 1.5 dB and 2 dB and 60 dB of isolation between them. A slight shift in frequency is observed in the measurements that can be easily explained by the variation in the permittivity of the substrate. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades grant numbers [PID2019-107688RB-C21, TEC2016-79700-C2-R and TEC2017-86619-R]

We wish to report a simple procedure for the preparation of 5-substituted-thienopyridin-7-ones and 7-substituted-1,6-naphthyridin-5(6H)-ones, in good yields, from the dianions of 3-methylthiophene-2-carboxylic and 2-methylnicotinic acids on treatment with nitriles.Brun Sanchez, Eva Maria, [email protected] ; Gil Grau, Salvador, [email protected] ; Parra Alvarez, Margarita, [email protected]

The conformation of chloramphenicol in the ordered and disordered phases

    Get PDF
The conformational behavior of chloramphenicol (CHL) in the solid, liquid and vapor phases is revisited here by means of FTIR spectroscopy and QM methods. In the crystalline phase, both the IR analysis and QM computations discard the conformer proposed by Acharya et al. (Acta Cryst., 1979, B35:1360–1363) and support the one proposed by Chatterjee et al. (J. Cryst. Mol. Struct., 1979, 9:295–304), characterized by an intramolecular O–H⋯O hydrogen bond in which the primary hydroxyl group acts as hydrogen bond donor. The conformational behavior of CHL in the liquid and gas phases has been analyzed using QM calculations. The Self-Consistent Reaction Field (SCRF) method with the Onsager solvation model has been used for the initial optimizations in solution, and the lowest energy conformers have been refined using the Solvation Model based on Density (SMD). In solution environment the intramolecular O–H⋯O hydrogen bond in CHL is reversed so that the secondary hydroxyl group acts as hydrogen bond donor. In addition, the dichloroacetamide group folds back further over the phenyl ring to form an intramolecular C–Cl⋯π halogen bond. Two different halogen bonds are actually observed (each one with a different chlorine atom) resulting in two different stable conformers, that can be detected by FTIR spectroscopy due to the conformational sensitivity of the C[dbnd]O group to the conformation of the dichloroacetyl group. Finally, the stability of the conformers with the polarity of the medium is also discussed. The authors are thankful for funds from the Spanish Ministry of In-novation and Competitiveness MINECO (MAT2016-78527-P), theBasque Government, Department of Education (IT-927-16) and the EUiPROMEDAI COST Action TD1305

Silicon-on-insulator shortwave infrared wavelength meter with integrated photodiodes for on-chip laser monitoring

    Get PDF
This paper demonstrates a very compact wavelength meter for on-chip laser monitoring in the shortwave infrared wavelength range based on an optimized arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) filter with an integrated photodiode array. The AWG response is designed to obtain large nearest neighbor crosstalk (i. e. large overlap) between output channels, which allows accurately measuring the wavelength of a laser under test using the centroid detection technique. The passive AWG is fabricated on a 220 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform and is combined with GaInAsSb-based photodiodes. The photodiodes are heterogeneously integrated on the output grating couplers of the AWG using DVS-BCB adhesive bonding. The complete device with AWG and detectors has a footprint of only 2 mm(2) while the measured accuracy and resolution of the detected wavelength is better than 20pm. (C)2014 Optical Society of Americ
