    How to Apply Artificial Intelligence for Social Innovations

    This study investigates how to apply artificial intelligence for social innovations using two socio-political factors critical for a Behavioral Theory of the Firm (BTF) – uncertainty and conflict. The analysis leads to four approaches for applying artificial intelligence for social innovations such as the agent-based modeling, social entrepreneurship, stakeholder capital, and social contract approaches. The valuation of artificial intelligence in the projects is endogenously created while the social innovators evaluate their environments, goals, and technologies. The study offers step-by-step guidance to assess the performance of and to create implementation strategies for social innovation projects combined with artificial intelligence

    Trends in socioeconomic inequalities in obesity among Korean adolescents: the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) 2006 to 2020

    OBJECTIVES This study investigated recent trends in the prevalence of obesity among Korean adolescents and explored socioeconomic disparities in obesity. METHODS This study used annual self-reported data on height, weight, and socioeconomic information from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey from 2006 to 2020. With a 95.8% response rate, the sample consisted of 818,210 adolescents. Obesity prevalence was calculated according to 4 socioeconomic indicators (household income, father’s educational attainment, mother’s educational attainment, and urbanicity). Socioeconomic inequality was quantified using the relative index of inequality (RII). RESULTS The overall prevalence of obesity increased, doubling from 5.9% in 2006 to 11.7% in 2020. Boys and high school students showed a higher prevalence. The RIIs in household income and parental educational attainments significantly increased with time, indicating a growing inequality in obesity. Socioeconomic disadvantages had a greater influence on obesity among girls. The most recent RII values for boys were 1.25 for income, 1.79 for the father’s education, and 1.45 for the mother’s education, whereas the corresponding values for girls were 2.49, 3.17, and 2.62, respectively. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight growing inequalities in adolescent obesity according to household income and parental educational attainments, especially for girls and middle schoolers

    Reconstitution of Cytokinin Signaling in Rice Protoplasts

    The major components of the cytokinin (CK) signaling pathway have been identified from the receptors to their downstream transcription factors. However, since signaling proteins are encoded by multigene families, characterizing and quantifying the contribution of each component or their combinations to the signaling cascade have been challenging. Here, we describe a transient gene expression system in rice (Oryza sativa) protoplasts suitable to reconstitute CK signaling branches using the CK reporter construct TCSn:fLUC, consisting of a synthetic CK-responsive promoter and the firefly luciferase gene, as a sensitive readout of signaling output. We used this system to systematically test the contributions of CK signaling components, either alone or in various combinations, with or without CK treatment. The type-B response regulators (RRs) OsRR16, OsRR17, OsRR18, and OsRR19 all activated TCSn:fLUC strongly, with OsRR18 and OsRR19 showing the strongest induction by CK. Cotransfecting the reporter with OsHP01, OsHP02, OsHP05, or OsHK03 alone resulted in much weaker effects relative to those of the type-B OsRRs. When we tested combinations of OsHK03, OsHPs, and OsRRs, each combination exhibited distinct CK signaling activities.     Enhanced mitochondrial DNA editing in mice using nuclear-exported TALE-linked deaminases and nucleases

    We present two methods for enhancing the efficiency of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) editing in mice with DddA-derived cytosine base editors (DdCBEs). First, we fused DdCBEs to a nuclear export signal (DdCBE-NES) to avoid off-target C-to-T conversions in the nuclear genome and improve editing efficiency in mtDNA. Second, mtDNA-targeted TALENs (mitoTALENs) are co-injected into mouse embryos to cleave unedited mtDNA. We generated a mouse model with the m.G12918A mutation in the MT-ND5 gene, associated with mitochondrial genetic disorders in humans. The mutant mice show hunched appearances, damaged mitochondria in kidney and brown adipose tissues, and hippocampal atrophy, resulting in premature death.11Nsciescopu
