Fast diffusion of graphene flake on graphene layer

Diffusion of a graphene flake on a graphene layer is analyzed and a new diffusion mechanism is proposed for the system under consideration. According to this mechanism, rotational transition of the flake from commensurate to incommensurate states takes place with subsequent simultaneous rotation and translational motion until the commensurate state is reached again, and so on. The molecular dynamics simulations and analytic estimates based on ab initio and semi-empirical calculations demonstrate that the proposed diffusion mechanism is dominant at temperatures T ~ Tcom, where Tcom corresponds to the barrier for transitions of the flake between adjacent energy minima in the commensurate states. For example, for the flake consisting of ~ 40, 200 and 700 atoms the contribution of the proposed diffusion mechanism through rotation of the flake to the incommensurate states exceeds that for diffusion of the flake in the commensurate states by one-two orders of magnitude at temperatures 50 - 150 K, 200 - 600 K and 800 - 2400 K, respectively. The possibility to experimentally measure the barriers to relative motion of graphene layers based on the study of diffusion of a graphene flake is considered. The results obtained are also relevant for understanding of dynamic behavior of polycyclic aromatic molecules on graphene and should be qualitatively valid for a set of commensurate adsorbate-adsorbent systems.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figure

Effects of Adjunctive rh-transferrin on Susceptibility and Emergence of Resistance in Gram-negative Pathogens

Introduction: Human pathogens have experienced selective pressure from antibiotics for nearly 80 years. The high speed of antibiotic resistance formation in nosocomial bacteria together with overuse of antibiotics has promoted the current multidrug resistance crisis. The problem is especially important for Russian healthcare, where the majority of isolated clinical strains of A. baumannii are drug-resistant: 93% of them are resistant to Cefoperazone, 61,2% - to Amicacin, 51,9% - to Levofloxacin [1]. We attempted to decrease the emergence of resistant mutants using a novel combination of antibiotics with recombinant human transferrin (rh-transferrin). We hypothesized that rh- transferrin, which functions by passively starving the bacteria of iron needed for microbial replication [2], would exert less selective pressure as compared to traditional antibiotics. It has been reported in previous studies that transferrin has broad antimicrobial effects in vitro against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungal pathogens [3]. The main goal of this project is to study the in vitro and in vivo effect of adjunctive transferrin on susceptibility and emergence of resistance in the Gram-negative pathogens Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Materials and Methods: Time-kill assays were done using ciprofloxacin or meropenem with and without transferrin. Viability was assessed at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 24 hours for A. baumannii and at 1, 4, and 24 hours for K. pneumonia. The assay was done using either resazurin (cellular metabolic readout) or quantitative culturing. Antibiotic-resistant mutants were selected by passaging a high inoculum of bacteria in sub-lethal concentrations of antibiotic for 24 hours or by serial passaging lower inocula of bacteria for 20 days with or without rh-transferrin. C3HeB/FeJ mice were infected IV with 2x10^7 CFU of A. baumannii LAC-4 strain and mice were administered a sub-therapeutic dose of ciprofloxacin (50 mg/kg BID) with and without transferrin (100 mg/kg). Results: The time-kill assays for both bacterial species showed no interaction between the antibiotics and rh-transferrin in vitro for most strains. Mutant selection for 24 hours and 20 days demonstrated a decrease in mutant emergence in the group treated with a combination of rh-transferrin and antibiotics compared to antibiotics alone. The 20-day passage experiment selected for mutants with an extremely high level of resistance. LD100 for all strains in C3HeB/FeJ mice were defined. In vivo efficacy experiments will begin soon with combination therapy. Conclusions: We found that transferrin containing therapeutic regimens suppressed the emergence of resistance in vitro, and is promising as an adjunct to antibiotic therapy

Based on diagnostic results, the article presents a comparative analysis of personality traits of seniour high school students, participating in youth nongovernmental organizations, and their peers, not participating in those. Obtained results are considered in the context of teenagers' self-actualization as part of of socially important activities.

The article studies the substantiation of the changes in the Classical University when its liberal model is transforming into the pragmatic model in modern knowledge society. The content of pragmatic model (commercialization of knowledge, education market, competitions) is against its classical model. Therefore, there is a need to clarify the criteria of the Classical University. The corporate culture is considered as its new criterion. The corporate culture aimed towards shaping of the professional and the person who is relevant to the modern knowledge society. Therefore, the modern Research University continues the traditional Idea of the Classical University in conditions of information (knowledge) society. Secondly, new strategy for the management of education in the Research University is the knowledge management. Thirdly, the corporate culture of the Research University can join complementarily the classical criteria of University and modern orientation to the market and commercialization of education. The specific content of the corporate culture as a new criterion of the University is relevant to the conditions of information or knowledge society. The corporate culture of the Research University provides not only competitiveness of professional, but also in its spiritual and moral characteristics

The article analyzes the results of a comparative study of the links of resilience with coping strategies and self-esteem in boys and girls aged 14-16. The sample consisted of 141 people (90 of them were girls, 51 were boys). As a diagnostic tool, the Muddy Test S. Muddy was used (in adaptation D. A. Leontyeva, E. I. Rasskazova); The questionnaire “Methods of coping behavior” (coping test) R. Lazarus and S. Folkman (in the adaptation of L. I. Wasserman); The method of diagnosis of self-assessment of the personality of Dembo - Rubinstein (modified by A. M. Prikhozhan). Hypothesis of the study was the assumption that there are specific features in the links of viability with self-esteem and coping strategies in boys and girls. Both common and specific for boys and girls connections between the studied variables were revealed.В статье анализируются результаты сравнительного исследования связей жизнестойкости с копинг-стратегиями и самооценкой у юношей и девушек

Use of a recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone:recombinant human luteinizing hormone (r-hFSH:r-hLH) 2:1 combination for controlled ovarian stimulation during assisted reproductive technology treatment: A real-world study of routine practice in the Russian Federation

Two observational studies in the Russian Federation described patient demographics/clinical decision for treatment with recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone:recombinant human luteinizing hormone (r-hFSH:r-hLH) 2:1 combination for ovarian stimulation (OS) during assisted reproductive technology (ART) and outcomes, respectively. The first (prospective) study enrolled 500 patients. After post-hoc regrouping to assign patients to discrete groups, 378 (75.6%) met the local Russian label for an r-hFSH:r-hLH 2:1 combination, 105 (21%) were treated according to other physician preference, and 17 (3.4%) met only the ESHRE Bologna criteria for a poor ovarian response. The clinical pregnancy rate per cycle was 30.4%. A total of 158/175 (90.3%) women achieving clinical pregnancy in the prospective study participated in the second (retrospective) study. The live birth rate per cycle was 25.8%. No new safety concerns were reported. These results support the use of the r-hFSH:r-hLH 2:1 combination in patients with a poor/suboptimal response to OS for ART treatment in the Russian Federation
