One-dimensional classical adjoint SU(2) Coulomb Gas

    Get PDF
The equation of state of a one-dimensional classical nonrelativistic Coulomb gas of particles in the adjoint representation of SU(2) is given. The problem is solved both with and without sources in the fundamental representation at either end of the system. The gas exhibits confining properties at low densities and temperatures and deconfinement in the limit of high densities and temperatures. However, there is no phase transition to a regime where the string tension vanishes identically; true deconfinement only happens for infinite densities and temperatures. In the low density, low temperature limit, a new type of collective behavior is observed.Comment: 6 pages, 1 postscript figur

On the spectrum of QCD(1+1) with large numbers of flavours N_F and colours N_C near N_F/N_C = 0

QCD(1+1) in the limit of a large number of flavours N_F and a large number of colours N_C is examined in the small N_F/N_C regime. Using perturbation theory in N_F/N_C, stringent results for the leading behaviour of the spectrum departing from N_F/N_C = 0 are obtained. These results provide benchmarks in the light of which previous truncated treatments of QCD(1+1) at large N_F and N_C are critically reconsidered.Comment: 6 revtex page

Energy Density of Vortices in the Schroedinger Picture

    Get PDF
The one-loop energy density of an infinitely thin static magnetic vortex in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is evaluated using the Schroedinger picture. Both the gluonic fluctuations as well as the quarks in the vortex background are included. The energy density of the magnetic vortex is discussed as a function of the magnetic flux. The center vortices correspond to local minima in the effective potential. These minima are degenerated with the perturbative vacuum if the fermions are ignored. Inclusion of fermions lifts this degeneracy, raising the vortex energy above the energy of the perturbative vacuum.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figure

An accuracy assessment of Magellan Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)

    Get PDF
Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of the Magellan spacecraft's angular position and velocity were made during July through September, 1989, during the spacecraft's heliocentric flight to Venus. The purpose of this data acquisition and reduction was to verify this data type for operational use before Magellan is inserted into Venus orbit, in August, 1990. The accuracy of these measurements are shown to be within 20 nanoradians in angular position, and within 5 picoradians/sec in angular velocity. The media effects and their calibrations are quantified; the wet fluctuating troposphere is the dominant source of measurement error for angular velocity. The charged particle effect is completely calibrated with S- and X-Band dual-frequency calibrations. Increasing the accuracy of the Earth platform model parameters, by using VLBI-derived tracking station locations consistent with the planetary ephemeris frame, and by including high frequency Earth tidal terms in the Earth rotation model, add a few nanoradians improvement to the angular position measurements. Angular velocity measurements were insensitive to these Earth platform modelling improvements

Do Cross-National Differences in the Costs of Children Generate Cross-National Differences in Fertility Rates?

    Get PDF
Parity-specific probabilities of having a next birth are estimated from national fertility data and are compared with nation-specific costs of having children as measured by time-budget data, by attitude data from the International Social Survey Program, and by panel data on labor earnings and standard of living changes following a birth. We focus on five countries (the US, West Germany, Denmark, Italy, and the United Kingdom), whose fertility rates span the observed fertility range in the contemporary industrialized world and whose social welfare and family policies span the conceptual space of standard welfare-state typologies. Definitive conclusions are difficult because of the multiple dimensions on which child costs can be measured, the possibility that child costs affect both the quantum and the tempo of fertility, the relatively small fertility differences across industrialized nations, and the inherent small-N problem resulting from nation-level comparisons. Empirical analysis, however, supports the assertion that institutionally driven child costs affect the fertility patterns of industrialized nations.

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors from lattice QCD using a nearly physical pion mass

    Get PDF
We present lattice QCD calculations of nucleon electromagnetic form factors using pion masses mπm_\pi = 149, 202, and 254 MeV and an action with clover-improved Wilson quarks coupled to smeared gauge fields, as used by the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration. Particular attention is given to removal of the effects of excited state contamination by calculation at three source-sink separations and use of the summation and generalized pencil-of-function methods. The combination of calculation at the nearly physical mass mπm_\pi = 149 MeV in a large spatial volume (mπLsm_\pi L_s = 4.2) and removal of excited state effects yields agreement with experiment for the electric and magnetic form factors GE(Q2)G_E(Q^2) and GM(Q2)G_M(Q^2) up to Q2Q^2 = 0.5 GeV2^2.Comment: v2: published version; 30 pages, 25 figures, 6 table

Initial nucleon structure results with chiral quarks at the physical point

    Get PDF
We report initial nucleon structure results computed on lattices with 2+1 dynamical M\"obius domain wall fermions at the physical point generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations. At this stage, we evaluate only connected quark contributions. In particular, we discuss the nucleon vector and axial-vector form factors, nucleon axial charge and the isovector quark momentum fraction. From currently available statistics, we estimate the stochastic accuracy of the determination of gAg_A and u−d_{u-d} to be around 10%, and we expect to reduce that to 5% within the next year. To reduce the computational cost of our calculations, we extensively use acceleration techniques such as low-eigenmode deflation and all-mode-averaging (AMA). We present a method for choosing optimal AMA parameters.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures; talk presented at the 32nd International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory, 23-28 June, 2014, Columbia University, New York, US

Vortex critical behavior at the de-confinement phase transition

The de-confinement phase transition in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is revisited in the vortex picture. Defining the world sheets of the confining vortices by maximal center projection, the percolation properties of the vortex lines in the hypercube consisting of the time axis and two spatial axis are studied. Using the percolation cumulant, the temperature for the percolation transition is seen to be in good agreement with the critical temperature of the thermal transition. The finite size scaling function for the cumulant is obtained. The critical index of the finite size scaling function is consistent with the index of the 3D Ising model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 PS figures, using revtex4, paragraph and refs added, typo correcte
