Conditions for Adiabatic Spin Transport in Disordered Systems
We address the controversy concerning the necessary conditions for the
observation of Berry phases in disordered mesoscopic conductors. For this
purpose we calculate the spin-dependent conductance of disordered
two-dimensional structures in the presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields.
Our numerical results show that for both, the overall conductance and quantum
corrections, the relevant parameter defining adiabatic spin transport scales
with the square root of the number of scattering events, in generalization of
Stern's original proposal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 1022 (1992)]. This could hinder
a clear-cut experimental observation of Berry phase effects in diffusive

Statistical significance of fine structure in the frequency spectrum of Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations
We discuss a statistical analysis of Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations
measured in a two-dimensional ring, in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit
interaction. Measurements performed at different values of gate voltage are
used to calculate the ensemble-averaged modulus of the Fourier spectrum and, at
each frequency, the standard deviation associated to the average. This allows
us to prove the statistical significance of a splitting that we observe in the
h/e peak of the averaged spectrum. Our work illustrates in detail the role of
sample specific effects on the frequency spectrum of Aharonov-Bohm conductance
oscillations and it demonstrates how fine structures of a different physical
origin can be discriminated from sample specific features.Comment: accepted for publication in PR
Plasma levels of dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene (DDE) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and survival following breast cancer in the Carolina Breast Cancer Study
Objectives: To examine plasma levels of dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene (DDE) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in association with survival among women with breast cancer who participated in a population-based case-control study. Methods: Participants included 456 white and 292 black women from the Carolina Breast Cancer Study Phase I who were diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer from 1993 to 1996, and who had available DDE/DDT and lipid measurements from blood samples obtained on average 4.1 months after diagnosis. Using the National Death Index, we identified 392 deaths (210 from breast cancer) over a median follow-up of 20.6 years. We used Cox regression to estimate covariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and breast cancer-specific 5-year mortality, and 20-year mortality conditional on 5-year survival, for lipid-standardized DDE and DDT levels. Associations stratified by race and estrogen receptor (ER) status were also examined. Results: The highest versus lowest DDE tertile and the highest vs non-detectable DDT quantile were associated with HRs of 1.95 (95% CI = 1.31â2.92) and 1.64 (95% CI = 1.10â2.44), respectively, for 20-year conditional all-cause mortality. DDE levels above versus below the median were associated with a HR of 1.69 (95% CI = 1.06â2.68) for 20-year conditional breast cancer-specific mortality among women overall, and HRs were 2.36 (95% CI = 1.03â5.42) among black women and 1.57 (95% CI = 0.86â2.89) among white women (PInteraction = 0.42), and 3.24 (95% CI = 1.38â7.58) among women with ERâ tumors and 1.29 (95% CI = 0.73â2.28) among women with ER+ tumors (PInteraction = 0.03). Conclusion: Exposure to DDE/DDT may adversely impact overall and breast cancer-specific survival. DDE exposure may contribute to the racial disparities in breast cancer survival
KASCADE: Astrophysical results and tests of hadronic interaction models
KASCADE is a multi-detector setup to get redundant information on single air
shower basis. The information is used to perform multiparameter analyses to
solve the threefold problem of the reconstruction of (i)the unknown primary
energy, (ii) the primary mass, and (iii) to quantify the characteristics of the
hadronic interactions in the air-shower development. In this talk recent
results of the KASCADE data analyses are summarized concerning cosmic ray
anisotropy studies, determination of flux spectra for different primary mass
groups, and approaches to test hadronic interaction models. Neither large scale
anisotropies nor point sources were found in the KASCADE data set. The energy
spectra of the light element groups result in a knee-like bending and a
steepening above the knee. The topology of the individual knee positions shows
a dependency on the primary particle. Though no hadronic interaction model is
fully able to describe the multi-parameter data of KASCADE consistently, the
more recent models or improved versions of older models reproduce the data

Prenatal exposure to organophosphate esters and cognitive development in young children in the Pregnancy, Infection, and Nutrition Study
Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are a class of chemicals commonly used as flame retardants and plasticizers. OPEs are applied to a wide variety of consumer products and have a propensity to leach from these products. Consequently, OPEs are ubiquitous contaminants in many human environments and human exposure is pervasive. Accumulating evidence suggests that OPEs are capable of interfering with childhood cognitive development through both neurologic- and endocrine-mediated mechanisms. However, observational evidence of cognitive effects is limited. We used data collected in the third phase of the Pregnancy, Infection, and Nutrition Study to investigate cognitive effects of prenatal exposure to OPEs. In a spot prenatal maternal urine sample, we measured the following OPE metabolites: diphenyl phosphate (DPHP), bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl phosphate) (BDCIPP), isopropyl-phenyl phenyl phosphate (ip-PPP), and 1-hydroxyl-2-propyl bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPHIPP). We assessed children's language and multi-faceted and overall cognitive development between two and three years of age using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (MB-CDI) and the Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MSEL). We used linear regression to estimate the change in children's scores on these developmental assessments per interquartile range (IQR) increase in log-transformed, specific-gravity-corrected prenatal OPE metabolite concentrations, adjusted for maternal age, education, income, race/ethnicity, BMI, and child's sex. A total of 149 children had both OPE metabolite measurements and MB-CDI scores, and 227 children had both OPE metabolite measurements and MSEL scores. We observed that higher concentrations of ip-PPP (ng/ml) were associated with lower scores on the MSEL Cognitive Composite Score (ÎČ = â2.61; 95% CI: â5.69, 0.46), and separately on two of the four MSEL Scales that comprise the Cognitive Composite, specifically the Fine Motor Scale (ÎČ = â3.08; 95% CI: â5.26, â0.91) and the Expressive Language Scale (ÎČ = â1.21; 95% CI: â2.91, 0.49). We similarly observed that prenatal ip-PPP concentrations were inversely associated with age-standardized scores on the MB-CDI Vocabulary assessment (ÎČ = â1.19; 95% CI: â2.53, 0.16). Other OPE metabolites were not strongly associated with performance on either assessment. Our results suggest that isopropylated triarylphosphate isomers, the presumed parent compounds of ip-PPP, may adversely impact cognitive development, including fine motor skills and early language abilities. Our study contributes to the growing body of observational evidence that suggests prenatal exposure to OPEs may adversely affect cognitive development
Prenatal exposure to organophosphate esters and behavioral development in young children in the Pregnancy, Infection, and Nutrition Study
Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are commonly used as plasticizers and flame retardants in consumer products, and exposure is relatively ubiquitous in most populations studied. This may be of concern as some OPEs may be neurotoxic, endocrine-disrupting, and interfere with behavioral development; however, observational evidence is limited. We used data from the Pregnancy, Infection, and Nutrition Study, a prospective birth cohort study, to investigate associations between maternal OPE metabolite concentrations during pregnancy and behavioral development in offspring. Women provided a urine sample during pregnancy that was analyzed for concentrations of OPE metabolites, including diphenyl phosphate (DPHP), bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl phosphate) (BDCIPP), isopropyl-phenyl phenyl phosphate (ip-PPP), and 1-hydroxyl-2-propyl bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPHIPP). Offspring's behavioral development was assessed by the Behavioral Assessment System for Children (2nd Edition) (BASC-2) at approximately 36 months. Linear regression was used to estimate associations between tertiles in specific gravity-corrected OPE metabolite concentrations and children's scores on the BASC-2, adjusted for maternal age, maternal BMI, maternal race, maternal education, familial income, maternal depression, quality of the home environment, and sex. Higher BDCIPP concentrations were associated with higher scores on the Behavioral Symptoms Index (1st vs. 3rd tertile: ÎČ = 3.03; 95% CI = 0.40, 5.67) and Externalizing Problems (1st vs. 3rd tertile: ÎČ = 2.49; 95% CI: â0.12, 5.10) composites. Among BASC-2 scales, BDCIPP was most strongly associated with Withdrawal, Attention Problems, Depression, Hyperactivity, and Aggression. DPHP concentrations were also associated with higher scores on the Externalizing Problems and Behavioral Symptoms Index composites, but not as strongly as BDCIPP. Conversely, higher concentrations of ip-PPP were associated with fewer adverse behavioral symptoms, including an inverse association with the Internalizing Problems composite (1st vs. 3rd tertile: ÎČ = â3.74; 95% CI = â6.75, â0.74) and constituent scales. BCIPHIPP was not strongly associated with any measured behavioral outcomes. Our results suggest that greater maternal exposure to tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl phosphate) (TDCIPP, parent compound of BDCIPP) and, to a lesser degree, triphenyl phosphate (TPHP, parent compound of DPHP) during pregnancy is associated with adverse behavioral development in children. Our study contributes to the growing body of evidence pertaining to adverse developmental effects of prenatal OPE exposure and highlights the need for further research to characterize risks associated with this ubiquitous family of chemicals
Plasma levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and breast cancer mortality: The Carolina Breast Cancer Study
Background: It is unknown whether carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) influence mortality following breast cancer. We examined plasma levels of 17 PCB congeners in association with mortality among women with breast cancer. Methods: Participants included 456 white and 292 black women in North Carolina who were diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer from 1993 to 1996, and who had PCB and lipid measurements from blood samples obtained an average of 4.1 months after diagnosis. Over a median follow-up of 20.6 years, there were 392 deaths (210 from breast cancer). We used Cox regression to estimate covariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and breast cancer-specific 5-year mortality, and 20-year mortality (conditional on 5-year survival) in association with tertiles and continuous ln-transformed lipid-adjusted PCB levels. Results: The highest (vs. lowest) tertiles of PCB74, PCB99, and PCB118 were associated with 5-year breast cancer-specific mortality HRs of 1.46 (95%CI = 0.86â2.47), 1.57 (95%CI = 0.90â2.73), and 1.86 (95%CI = 1.07â3.23), respectively. Additionally, one-ln unit increases in PCB74, PCB99, PCB118, and total PCBs were each associated with 33â40% increases in 5-year breast cancer-specific mortality rates. The PCBs were not, however, associated with longer-term breast cancer-specific mortality. For all-cause mortality, one-ln unit increases in PCB118, PCB146, PCB153, PCB182, PCB187, and total PCBs were associated with 20â37% increases in 20-year all-cause mortality rates among women who survived at least 5 years. Conclusion: PCBs may increase the risk of short-term breast cancer-specific mortality and long-term all-cause mortality among women with breast cancer
The relationship of cumulative psychosocial adversity with antepartum depression and anxiety
Background: Exposure to multiple psychosocial risk factors may increase vulnerability for mental health conditions during pregnancy. This analysis examined the relationship of a novel psychosocial adversity index with the co-occurrence and persistence of depression and anxiety throughout pregnancy. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis included 1797 pregnant women screened in the second/third trimesters for depression and anxiety symptoms and for eight contextual and individual psychosocial factors. The factors were summed to create a psychosocial adversity index; reporting four or more factors indicated high adversity. Elevated symptoms in both trimesters indicated persistent depression/anxiety and elevated symptoms at the same trimester indicated comorbid symptoms. The associations between the psychosocial adversity index and mental health were estimated. Results: Compared with a low psychosocial adversity index, women reporting a high level of psychosocial adversities had 2.06 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.51â2.82) times higher adjusted odds of only depressive or anxiety symptoms, and 5.57 (95% CI: 3.95â7.85) times higher adjusted odds of comorbid symptoms. The associations for persistent symptoms were of similar direction and magnitude. Conclusion: High psychosocial adversity was associated with persistent and comorbid depressive symptoms and anxiety during pregnancy. Assessing psychosocial adversity can help identify women at increased risk who would benefit from tailored mental health interventions
Superconductor coupled to two Luttinger liquids as an entangler for electron spins
We consider an s-wave superconductor (SC) which is tunnel-coupled to two
spatially separated Luttinger liquid (LL) leads. We demonstrate that such a
setup acts as an entangler, i.e. it creates spin-singlets of two electrons
which are spatially separated, thereby providing a source of electronic
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pairs. We show that in the presence of a bias voltage,
which is smaller than the energy gap in the SC, a stationary current of
spin-entangled electrons can flow from the SC to the LL leads due to Andreev
tunneling events. We discuss two competing transport channels for Cooper pairs
to tunnel from the SC into the LL leads. On the one hand, the coherent
tunneling of two electrons into the same LL lead is shown to be suppressed by
strong LL correlations compared to single-electron tunneling into a LL. On the
other hand, the tunneling of two spin-entangled electrons into different leads
is suppressed by the initial spatial separation of the two electrons coming
from the same Cooper pair. We show that the latter suppression depends
crucially on the effective dimensionality of the SC. We identify a regime of
experimental interest in which the separation of two spin-entangled electrons
is favored. We determine the decay of the singlet state of two electrons
injected into different leads caused by the LL correlations. Although the
electron is not a proper quasiparticle of the LL, the spin information can
still be transported via the spin density fluctuations produced by the injected
