Heat Kernel for Spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger Field in General Covariant Gauge
The heat kernel for the spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger gauge field on an arbitrary
Ricci flat space-time () is investigated in a family of covariant gauges
with one gauge parameter . The -dependent term of the kernel is
expressed by the spin-1/2 heat kernel. It is shown that the axial anomaly and
the one-loop divegence of the action are -independent, and that the
conformal anomaly has an -dependent total derivative term in

Vacuum Stability Bound on Extended GMSB Models
Extensions of GMSB models were explored to explain the recent reports of the
Higgs boson mass around 124-126 GeV. Some models predict a large mu term, which
can spoil the vacuum stability of the universe. We study two GMSB extensions:
i) the model with a large trilinear coupling of the top squark, and ii) that
with extra vector-like matters. In both models, the vacuum stability condition
provides upper bounds on the gluino mass if combined with the muon g-2. The
whole parameter region is expected to be covered by LHC at sqrt{s} = 14 TeV.
The analysis is also applied to the mSUGRA models with the vector-like matters.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
Effect of Oscillating Landau Bandwidth on the Integer Quantum Hall Effect in a Unidirectional Lateral Superlattice
We have measured activation gaps for odd-integer quantum Hall states in a
unidirectional lateral superlattice (ULSL) -- a two-dimensional electron gas
(2DEG) subjected to a unidirectional periodic modulation of the electrostatic
potential. By comparing the activation gaps with those simultaneously measured
in the adjacent section of the same 2DEG sample without modulation, we find
that the gaps are reduced in the ULSL by an amount corresponding to the width
acquired by the Landau levels through the introduction of the modulation. The
decrement of the activation gap varies with the magnetic field following the
variation of the Landau bandwidth due to the commensurability effect. Notably,
the decrement vanishes at the flat band conditions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, minor revisio
Modulation Induced Phase Transition from Fractional Quantum Hall to Stripe State at nu=5/3
We have investigated the effect of unidirectional periodic potential
modulation on the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at filling factors nu=5/3
and 4/3. For large enough modulation amplitude, we find that the resistivity
minimum at nu=5/3 gives way to a peak that grows with decreasing temperature.
Density matrix renormalization group calculation reveals that phase transition
from FQH state to unidirectional striped state having a period sim 4 l (with l
the magnetic length) takes place at nu=1/3 (equivalent to nu=5/3 by the
particle-hole symmetry) with the increase of the modulation amplitude,
suggesting that the observed peak is the manifestation of the stripe phase.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures; minor revisio

dos profissionais de saúde mental pela dimensão do impacto psicológico do
diagnóstico, evolução da infeção e a vulnerabilidade destes sujeitos. Seja
como for, em traço de evolução da terapêutica, a infeção pelo vírus da
imunodeficiência humana (VIH) é, atualmente, uma doença tendencialmente
crónica.
Entre as perturbações mentais, a depressão é descrita como uma das
comorbidades mais frequentes nos indivíduos com VIH e que muitas vezes
passa despercebida. Acompanha-se de elevada morbilidade e apresenta um
impacto sócio-económico, sendo uma das causas mais frequentes de
suicídio. Para além da incapacidade que se vai instalando progressivamente,
os indivíduos são confrontados com o estigma social, carência de apoio
social e isolamento.
Neste sentido, este estudo foi realizado com o intuito de chamar a
atenção para a necessidade de intervenção psicoterapêutica com esta
população, através da exploração dos sintomas psicopatológicos mais
prevalentes (com especial destaque para a depressão e para a ideação
suicida), tendo em consideração a progressão da doença e a as caraterísticas
socio-demográficas.Patients infected with HIV have been the object of interest on the part
of mental health professionals due to the dimension of the psychological
impact of the diagnosis, the course of infection and the vulnerability of these
subjects. Anyway, in trait evolution of therapy, infection by the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is currently a chronic disease.
Among mental disorders, depression is described as one of the most
frequent comorbidities in individuals infected with HIV and which often
goes unnoticed. It is accompanied by high morbidity and presents a socialeconomic
impact, being one of the most frequent causes of suicide. Beyond
the progressively established disability, individuals face social stigma, lack
of social support and isolation.
Thus, this study was conducted in order to draw attention to the need
for psychotherapeutic intervention among this population, through the
exploitation of the most prevalent psychopathological symptoms (with
special emphasis on depression and suicidal ideation), taking into account
the progression of this disease and the social-demographic characteristics
Entropy production by Q-ball decay for diluting long-lived charged particles
The cosmic abundance of a long-lived charged particle such as a stau is
tightly constrained by the catalyzed big bang nucleosynthesis. One of the ways
to evade the constraints is to dilute those particles by a huge entropy
production. We evaluate the dilution factor in a case that non-relativistic
matter dominates the energy density of the universe and decays with large
entropy production. We find that large Q balls can do the job, which is
naturally produced in the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Finite size effects on kaonic pasta structures
Non-uniform structures of mixed phases at the first-order phase transition to
charged kaon condensation are studied using a density functional theory within
the relativistic mean field model. Including electric field effects and
applying the Gibbs conditions in a proper way, we numerically determine density
profiles of nucleons, electrons and condensed kaons. Importance of charge
screening effects is elucidated and thereby we show that the Maxwell
construction is effectively justified. Surface effect is also studied to figure
out its effect on the density profiles
Timing and spectral studies of the transient X-ray pulsar EXO 053109-6609.2 with ASCA and Beppo-SAX
We report timing and spectral properties of the transient Be X-ray pulsar EXO
053109--6609.2 studied using observations made with the ASCA and BeppoSAX
observatories. Though there must have been at least one spin-down episode of
the pulsar since its discovery, the new pulse period measurements show a
monotonic spin-up trend since 1996. The pulse profile is found to have marginal
energy dependence. There is also evidence for strong luminosity dependence of
the pulse profile, a single peaked profile at low luminosity that changes to a
double peaked profile at high luminosity. This suggests a change in the
accretion pattern at certain luminosity level. The X-ray spectrum is found to
consist of a simple power-law with photon index in the range of 0.4--0.8. At
high intensity level the spectrum also shows presence of weak iron emission

The Magnetic Phase Diagram and the Pressure and Field Dependence of the Fermi Surface in UGe
The ac susceptibility and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect in UGe are
measured at pressures {\it P} up to 17.7 kbar for the magnetic field {\it B}
parallel to the {\it a} axis, which is the easy axis of magnetization. Two
anomalies are observed at {\it B}({\it P}) and {\it B}({\it P}) ({\it
B} {\it B} at any {\it P}), and the {\it P}-{\it B} phase diagram
is presented. The Fermi surface and quasiparticle mass are found to vary
smoothly with pressure up to 17.7 kbar unless the phase boundary {\it
B}({\it P}) is crossed. The observed dHvA frequencies may be grouped into
three according to their pressure dependences, which are largely positive,
nearly constant or negative. It is suggested that the quasiparticle mass
moderately increases as the boundary {\it B}({\it P}) is approached. DHvA
effect measurements are also performed across the boundary at 16.8 kbar.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.
