    Merlin: A Language for Provisioning Network Resources

    This paper presents Merlin, a new framework for managing resources in software-defined networks. With Merlin, administrators express high-level policies using programs in a declarative language. The language includes logical predicates to identify sets of packets, regular expressions to encode forwarding paths, and arithmetic formulas to specify bandwidth constraints. The Merlin compiler uses a combination of advanced techniques to translate these policies into code that can be executed on network elements including a constraint solver that allocates bandwidth using parameterizable heuristics. To facilitate dynamic adaptation, Merlin provides mechanisms for delegating control of sub-policies and for verifying that modifications made to sub-policies do not violate global constraints. Experiments demonstrate the expressiveness and scalability of Merlin on real-world topologies and applications. Overall, Merlin simplifies network administration by providing high-level abstractions for specifying network policies and scalable infrastructure for enforcing them

    Amelioration of aluminium-induced liver damage by vitamin E

    Objective: To investigate the effects of aluminium sulphate on the microscopic morphology of the liver and on vitamin E amelioration of aluminium-induced liver damage. Methods: Rats were injected intraperitonally with aluminium sulphate alone or aluminium sulphate together with vitamin E, with saline injected rats used as the control group. The study took place in Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine in 2005. Results: The rats exposed to aluminium showed morphological changes in addition to previously reported biochemical changes in the liver. Ihe anti-oxidant vitamin E significantly diminished the liver damage seen due to aluminium. Conclusion: There is an apparent protective effect of vitamin E on parenteral aluminium exposure

    Quantum adiabatic polarons by translationally invariant perturbation theory

    The translationally invariant diagrammatic quantum perturbation theory (TPT) is applied to the polaron problem on the 1D lattice, modeled through the Holstein Hamiltonian with the phonon frequency omega0, the electron hopping t and the electron-phonon coupling constant g. The self-energy diagrams of the fourth-order in g are calculated exactly for an intermittently added electron, in addition to the previously known second-order term. The corresponding quadratic and quartic corrections to the polaron ground state energy become comparable at t/omega0>1 for g/omega0~(t/omega0)^{1/4} when the electron self-trapping and translation become adiabatic. The corresponding non adiabatic/adiabatic crossover occurs while the polaron width is large, i.e. the lattice coarsening negligible. This result is extended to the range (t/omega0)^{1/2}>g/omega0>(t/omega0)^{1/4}>1 by considering the scaling properties of the high-order self-energy diagrams. It is shown that the polaron ground state energy, its width and the effective mass agree with the results found traditionally from the broken symmetry side, kinematic corrections included. The Landau self trapping of the electron in the classic self-consistent, localized displacement potential, the restoration of the translational symmetry by the classic translational Goldstone mode and the quantization of the polaronic translational coordinate are thus all encompassed by a quantum theory which is translationally invariant from the outset.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Semiclassical action based on dynamical mean-field theory describing electrons interacting with local lattice fluctuations

    We extend a recently introduced semiclassical approach to calculating the influence of local lattice fluctuations on electronic properties of metals and metallic molecular crystals. The effective action of electrons in degenerate orbital states coupling to Jahn-Teller distortions is derived, employing dynamical mean-field theory and adiabatic expansions. We improve on previous numerical treatments of the semiclassical action and present for the simplifying Holstein model results for the finite temperature optical conductivity at electron-phonon coupling strengths from weak to strong. Significant transfer of spectral weight from high to low frequencies is obtained on isotope substitution in the Fermi-liquid to polaron crossover regime.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    A novel treatment strategy for preterm birth: Intra-vaginal progesterone-loaded fibrous patches

    Progesterone-loaded poly(lactic) acid fibrous polymeric patches were produced using electrospinning and pressurized gyration for intra-vaginal application to prevent preterm birth. The patches were intravaginally inserted into rats in the final week of their pregnancy, equivalent to the third trimester of human pregnancy. Maintenance tocolysis with progesterone-loaded patches was elucidated by recording the contractile response of uterine smooth muscle to noradrenaline in pregnant rats. Both progesterone-loaded patches indicated similar results from release and thermal studies, however, patches obtained by electrospinning had smaller average diameters and more uniform dispersion compared to pressurized gyration. Patches obtained by pressurized gyration had better results in production yield and tensile strength than electrospinning; thereby pressurized gyration is better suited for scaled-up production. The patches did not affect cell attachment, viability, and proliferation on Vero cells negatively. Consequently, progesterone-loaded patches are a novel and successful treatment strategy for preventing preterm birth

    Limitations in structural identification of large constructed structures

    Journal of Structural EngineeringThe objective of this paper is to discuss the limitations in structural identification of large constructed structures. These limitations arise due to the geometric complexity, uncertain boundary and continuity conditions, loading environment, and the imperfect knowledge and errors in modeling such large constructed facilities. In this paper, the writers present their studies on developing a mixed microscopic-structural element level three-dimensional finite-element FE modeling of a long-span bridge structure and its structural system identification by integrating various experimental techniques. It is shown that a reasonable level of confidence 50–90% can be achieved with a model that is calibrated using global and local structural monitoring data with a sufficiently high spatial resolution. The reliability of the global attributes, such as boundary and continuity conditions that may be identified and simulated by means of field-calibrated models using only dynamic test results globally calibrated models , may appear to be high as much as 90% . However, the reliability that should be expected for local stress fields is shown to be an entirely different matter, and a calibration based on just dynamic testing would be unable to reveal the confidence in simulated local responses. This is especially true for long-span bridges, because the resolutions of the dynamic test grids are often quite sparse due to the large size of the structures. In this paper, the writers illustrate that the density, modality, and bandwidth of experimental data should be carefully evaluated and matched to the size and complexity of a constructed system before claiming that a FE model is validated. It is also shown that even more than three dozen acceleration measurement points, two dozen strain measurements, and a continuous surveillance of wind and temperature were barely sufficient for a credible structural identification of a long-span bridge

    MARINDUK ISLAND IN THE PHILIPPINES FROM THE POSITION OF GEOGRAPHY OF TOURISM

    The Marinduque Island, which is a part of the Marinduque province, is a small but densely populated island within the Luzon Islands Group. The island surrounded by the water of the Sibuan Sea, the island has an area of 959 square kilometers and a population of 245 000 people. Flat plains, low coasts, low slope plains, mangrove forests and hilly lands constitute the most important natural elements of the Marinduque Island. There are many bays, beaches, atoll, cliffs, capes, coral and mangrove forests on the coast of the island. In this study, the geographical location of the Marinduque Island and its general geographical features have been explicated, and the main tourism elements of the island have been briefly discussed. We have tried to examine the main physical and human characteristics of the island by identifying its tourism potential. Furthermore, the main accommodation facilities, beaches and hotels located on the east and west coasts of the island have been identified. The main purpose of this study is to introduce the tourism potential and natural beauties of this Philippine island, which is not well-known among the foreign tourists and to offer new holiday options for the inquisitive tourists

    Variational study of the Holstein polaron

    The paper deals with the ground and the first excited state of the polaron in the one dimensional Holstein model. Various variational methods are used to investigate both the weak coupling and strong coupling case, as well as the crossover regime between them. Two of the methods, which are presented here for the first time, introduce interesting elements to the understanding of the nature of the polaron. Reliable numerical evidence is found that, in the strong coupling regime, the ground and the first excited state of the self-trapped polaron are well described within the adiabatic limit. The lattice vibration modes associated with the self-trapped polarons are analyzed in detail, and the frequency softening of the vibration mode at the central site of the small polaron is estimated. It is shown that the first excited state of the system in the strong coupling regime corresponds to the excitation of the soft phonon mode within the polaron. In the crossover regime, the ground and the first excited state of the system can be approximated by the anticrossing of the self-trapped and the delocalized polaron state. In this way, the connection between the behavior of the ground and the first excited state is qualitatively explained.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, PRB 65, 14430

    Numerical study of the EeE\otimes e Jahn-Teller polaron and bipolaron

    The properties of the polaron and bipolaron are explored in the 1D Jahn-Teller model with dynamical quantum phonons. The ground-state properties of the polaron and bipolaron are computed using a recently developed variational method. Dynamical properties of the ground state of a polaron are investigated by calculating the optical conductivity σ(ω)\sigma(\omega). Our numerical results suggest that the Jahn-Teller and Holstein polarons are similar. However, in the strong-coupling regime qualitative differences in σ(ω)\sigma(\omega) between the two models are found and discussed. The influence of the electron-phonon coupling and the electrostatic repulsion on the bipolaron binding energy, bipolaron masses, and correlation functions is investigated.Comment: 9 pages including 11 figures.
