Constant depth microfluidic networks based on a generalised Murray’s law for Newtonian and power-law fluids

using a novel biomimetic rule, based on Murray’s law. Murray’s principle is extended to
consider the flow of power-law fluids in planar geometries (i.e. of constant depth rectangular
cross-section) typical of lab-on-a-chip applications. The proposed design offers the ability to
control precisely the shear-stress distributions and to predict the flow resistance along the network.
We use an in-house code to perform computational fluid dynamics simulations in order
to assess the extent of the validity of the proposed design for Newtonian, shear-thinning and
shear-thickening fluids under different flow conditions
Tu Weiming, Liberal Education, and the Dialogue of the Humanities
This chapter discusses aspects of the work of Tu Weiming in relation to the idea of a liberal education. It does this in the context of broader questions about the nature, problems, and possibilities of comparative philosophy. Dialogue emerges in Tu’s work both as a substantive topic and as integral to aspects of his approach to philosophy and to his commitment to the dissemination of Confucian thought. In spite of Tu’s obvious success in many respects, some problems with this engagement with and in dialogue are identified, and these in turn are related to his treatment of questions of language and translation – in particular to his somewhat negative attitude to philosophy’s linguistic turn. The comparison of Confucian approaches with the idea of a liberal education enables reconsideration of ideas that are central to education, and in so doing the discussion demonstrates the value of comparative approaches in the study of education
“I Kiss Them Because I Love Them”: The Emergence of Heterosexual Men Kissing in British Institutes of Education.
In this article, we combined data from 145 interviews and three ethnographic investigations of heterosexual male students in the U.K. from multiple educational settings. Our results indicate that 89% have, at some point, kissed another male on the lips which they reported as being non-sexual: a means of expressing platonic affection among heterosexual friends. Moreover, 37% also reported engaging in sustained same-sex kissing, something they construed as non-sexual and non-homosexual. Although the students in our study understood that this type of kissing remains somewhat culturally symbolized as a taboo sexual behavior, they nonetheless reconstructed it, making it compatible with heteromasculinity by recoding it as homosocial. We hypothesize that both these types of kissing behaviors are increasingly permissible due to rapidly decreasing levels of cultural homophobia. Furthermore, we argue that there has been a loosening of the restricted physical and emotional boundaries of traditional heteromasculinity in these educational settings, something which may also gradually assist in the erosion of prevailing heterosexual hegemony
Importance of salt fingering for new nitrogen supply in the oligotrophic ocean.
The input of new nitrogen into the euphotic zone constrains the export of organic carbon to
the deep ocean and thereby the biologically mediated long-term CO2 exchange between
the ocean and atmosphere. In low-latitude open-ocean regions, turbulence-driven nitrate
diffusion from the ocean’s interior and biological fixation of atmospheric N2 are the main
sources of new nitrogen for phytoplankton productivity. With measurements across the
tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, we show that nitrate diffusion
(171±190 mmolm 2 d 1) dominates over N2 fixation (9.0±9.4 mmolm 2 d 1) at the time
of sampling. Nitrate diffusion mediated by salt fingers is responsible for ca. 20% of the new
nitrogen supply in several provinces of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Our results indicate
that salt finger diffusion should be considered in present and future ocean nitrogen budgets,

The burden of neglected tropical diseases in Ethiopia, and opportunities for integrated control and elimination
Background:
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of chronic parasitic diseases and related conditions that are the most common diseases among the 2·7 billion people globally living on less than US$2 per day. In response to the growing challenge of NTDs, Ethiopia is preparing to launch a NTD Master Plan. The purpose of this review is to underscore the burden of NTDs in Ethiopia, highlight the state of current interventions, and suggest ways forward.
Results:
This review indicates that NTDs are significant public health problems in Ethiopia. From the analysis reported here, Ethiopia stands out for having the largest number of NTD cases following Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ethiopia is estimated to have the highest burden of trachoma, podoconiosis and cutaneous leishmaniasis in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the second highest burden in terms of ascariasis, leprosy and visceral leishmaniasis, and the third highest burden of hookworm. Infections such as schistosomiasis, trichuriasis, lymphatic filariasis and rabies are also common. A third of Ethiopians are infected with ascariasis, one quarter is infected with trichuriasis and one in eight Ethiopians lives with hookworm or is infected with trachoma. However, despite these high burdens of infection, the control of most NTDs in Ethiopia is in its infancy. In terms of NTD control achievements, Ethiopia reached the leprosy elimination target of 1 case/10,000 population in 1999. No cases of human African trypanosomiasis have been reported since 1984. Guinea worm eradication is in its final phase. The Onchocerciasis Control Program has been making steady progress since 2001. A national blindness survey was conducted in 2006 and the trachoma program has kicked off in some regions. Lymphatic Filariasis, podoconiosis and rabies mapping are underway.
Conclusion:
Ethiopia bears a significant burden of NTDs compared to other SSA countries. To achieve success in integrated control of NTDs, integrated mapping, rapid scale up of interventions and operational research into co implementation of intervention packages will be crucial
Turnover of Carbohydrate-Rich Vegetal Matter During Microaerobic Composting and After Amendment in Soil
We propose that microaerobic composting (MC) can be used to decompose vegetal matter with a short turnover time and large carbon (C) recycling potential. We used a novel method for measuring the degree of fragmentation of water-insoluble acid-soluble (WIAS) polysaccharides as a proxy in tracking their relative degree of degradation (i.e., fragmentation endpoint index). Oak leaves and food scrap processed by MC reached a fragmentation end point within 2 weeks. After amending the MC products into soil, the half-life of the polysaccharide residues was ~6–7 times longer (~100–110 days) than that measured during MC. The main products given up during MC were volatile organic acids (VOAs), alcohols and soluble carbohydrates in the compost tea, and CO2. These products accounted for about 2% of the initial carbon in the feedstock. Very small amounts of VOAs, particularly butyric acid, were formed in the amended soil. Based on a residence time of materials in fermentors of 2 weeks, a ~100-m3 capacity MC facility could process 2,000–4,000 metric tons of vegetable matter amended in ten hectares of arable land per year
Reduction and Return of Infectious Trachoma in Severely Affected Communities in Ethiopia
Trachoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the developing world. The World Health Organization has a multi-pronged approach to controlling the ocular chlamydial infection that causes the disease, including distributing antibiotics to entire communities. Even a single community treatment dramatically reduces the prevalence of the infection. Unfortunately, infection returns back into communities after treatment, at least in severely affected areas such as rural Ethiopia. Here, we assess whether additional scheduled treatments in 16 communities in the Gurage area of Ethiopia further reduce infection, and whether the disease returns after distributions are stopped. In communities with the highest levels of trachoma ever studied, we find that repeated mass oral azithromycin distributions gradually reduce the prevalence of trachoma infection in a community, as long as these treatments are given frequently enough and to enough people in the community. Unfortunately, infection returns into the communities after the last treatment. Sustainable changes or complete local elimination of infection will be necessary to stop the return of ocular chlamydial in communities with very high prevalence of the disease
Structure of the Vesicular Stomatitis Virus N0-P Complex
Replication of non-segmented negative-strand RNA viruses requires the continuous supply of the nucleoprotein (N) in the form of a complex with the phosphoprotein (P). Here, we present the structural characterization of a soluble, heterodimeric complex between a variant of vesicular stomatitis virus N lacking its 21 N-terminal residues (NΔ21) and a peptide of 60 amino acids (P60) encompassing the molecular recognition element (MoRE) of P that binds RNA-free N (N0). The complex crystallized in a decameric circular form, which was solved at 3.0 Å resolution, reveals how the MoRE folds upon binding to N and competes with RNA binding and N polymerization. Small-angle X-ray scattering experiment and NMR spectroscopy on the soluble complex confirms the binding of the MoRE and indicates that its flanking regions remain flexible in the complex. The structure of this complex also suggests a mechanism for the initiation of viral RNA synthesis
The personal and contextual contributors to school belongingness among primary school students
School belongingness has gained currency among educators and school health professionals as an important determinant of adolescent health. The current cross-sectional study presents the 15 most significant personal and contextual factors that collectively explain 66.4% (two-thirds) of the variability in 12-year old students' perceptions of belongingness in primary school. The study is part of a larger longitudinal study investigating the factors associated with student adjustment in the transition from primary to secondary school. The study found that girls and students with disabilities had higher school belongingness scores than boys, and their typically developing counterparts respectively; and explained 2.5% of the variability in school belongingness. The majority (47.1% out of 66.4%) of the variability in school belongingness was explained by student personal factors, such as social acceptance, physical appearance competence, coping skills, and social affiliation motivation; followed by parental expectations (3% out of 66.4%), and school-based factors (13.9% out of 66.4%) such as, classroom involvement, task-goal structure, autonomy provision, cultural pluralism, and absence of bullying. Each of the identified contributors of primary school belongingness can be shaped through interventions, system changes, or policy reforms
