Behavioural patterns in social networks
In this paper, we focus on the analysis of individual decision making for the formation of social networks, using experimentally generated data. We first analyse the determinants of the individual demand for links under the assumption of agents' static expectations. The results of this exercise subsequently allow us to identify patterns of behaviour that can be subsumed in three strategies of link formation: 1) reciprocator strategy - players propose links to those from whom they have received link proposals in the previous round; 2) myopic best response strategy - players aim to profit from maximisation; 3) opportunistic strategy - players reciprocate link proposals to those who have the largest number of connections. We find that these strategies explain approximately 76% of the observed choices. We finally estimate a mixture model to highlight the proportion of the population who adopt each of these strategies.Network formation, Experiments, Multivariate probit models, Mixture models
Legal medical consideration of alzheimer’s disease patients’ dysgraphia and cognitive dysfunction: a 6 month follow up
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of Alzheimer’s disease
(AD) patients to express intentions and desires, and their decision-making capacity. This study
examines the findings from a 6-month follow-up of our previous results in which 30 patients
participated.
Materials and methods: The patient’s cognition was examined by conducting the tests of 14
questions and letter-writing ability over a period of 19 days, and it was repeated after 6 months.
The difference between these two cognitive measures (PQ1 before–PQ2 before), tested previously
and later the writing test, was designated DΔ before. The test was repeated after 6 months,
and PQ1 after–PQ2 after was designated DΔ after.
Results: Several markedly strong relationships between dysgraphia and other measures of
cognitive performance in AD patients were observed. The most aged patients (over 86 years),
despite less frequency, maintain the cognitive capacity manifested in the graphic expressions.
A document, written by an AD patient presents an honest expression of the patient’s intention
if that document is legible, clear, and comprehensive.
Conclusion: The identification of impairment/deficits in writing and cognition during different
phases of AD may facilitate the understanding of disease progression and identify the occasions
during which the patient may be considered sufficiently lucid to make decisions.

OPEN THEISM AND RISK MANAGEMENT : A PHILOSOPHICAL AND BIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
Publisher Copyright: © 2021 The Authors. Zygon® published by Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of Joint Publication Board of Zygon.Open theism denies that God has definite exhaustive foreknowledge, and affirms that God takes certain risks when creating the universe. Critics of open theism often complain that the risks are too high. Perhaps there is something morally wrong with God taking a risk in creating a universe with an open future. Open theists have tried to respond by clarifying how much risk is involved in God creating an open universe, though we argue that it remains unclear how much risk is actually involved. We claim that open theists need to start developing theories about how God manages risks in order to bring about His purposes for the universe. In this article, we will take a philosophical and biological perspective on risk management that adds plausibility to open theism. We will consider how God can use different risk-management, surveillance, and redundancy systems in the natural world in order to accomplish His goals.Peer reviewe
Low 25-OH vitamin D levels at time of diagnosis and recurrence of ovarian cancer.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between 25-OH vitamin D and ovarian cancer as a diagnostic marker or recurrence disease marker. We studied the following: (1) 61 women without gynecologic diseases, (2) 45 women affected by benign ovarian disease, (3) 46 women with recent diagnosis of ovarian cancer, (4) 26 follow-up women with recurrent ovarian cancer, and (5) 32 follow-up women with stable ovarian cancer. The 25-OH vitamin D was quantified with LUMIPULSE® G 25-OH vitamin D on LUMIPULSE® G 1200 (Fujirebio, Japan). As a threshold value, identified by ROC curve analysis, 20.2 ng/mL (sensitivity 73.3 %, specificity 84 %) was chosen corresponding to the limit between sufficient and insufficient 25-OH vitamin D according to the WHO. Low 25-OH vitamin D levels were observed in 26 % of women without gynecologic diseases, in 80 % of women with recent diagnosis of ovarian cancer and in 24 % women affected by benign ovarian diseases (p < 0.001). The follow-up study showed an insufficient level of 25-OH vitamin D in 73 % women with recurrent ovarian cancer and in 47 % women with stable ovarian cancer (p < 0.0003). This study showed that patients with ovarian cancer are often insufficient in 25-OH vitamin D compared to women with benign ovarian diseases. The women with recurrent ovarian cancer presented more often low levels compared to women with stable ovarian cancer. This study suggests that 25-OH vitamin D, due to its antiproliferative properties, can be a good marker for ovarian cancer also
Role of galectin-3 combined with multi-detector contrast enhanced computed tomography in predicting disease recurrence in patients with ovarian cancer
Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is an endogenous β-galactoside-binding lectin, playing an important role in the pathogenesis
of multiple malignancies. Aim of the study was to evaluate in a group of patients treated for ovarian cancer (EOC),
the role of Gal-3 combined with multi-detector contrast-enhanced computed tomography (MDCT), as predictor of
recurrence disease. Seventeen follow-up patients with recurrent ovarian cancer and 13 follow-up patients with stable
ovarian disease, who performed MDCT at one-year follow-up after cytoreductive treatment, were enrolled. Serum
Gal-3 concentrations were determined by using ELISA method. Twenty healthy controls were included in the analysis.
Two radiologist blinded to patients status, reviewed MDCT exams, recording the following signs of disease recurrence:
local tumor spread, enlarged lymph-nodes, carcinomatosis implants and metastases. We calculated the respective
threshold values of Gal- 3 identified by ROC curve analysis for each imaging findings related to disease recurrence
: lymphoadenopathies 92.45 ng/ml (AUC: 0.81, Se=91% Spe=73%), carcinomatosis 85.95 ng/ml (AUC:0.93 Se=
93.7%, Spe=92.8%), local tumor spread 99.05 (AUC:0.90, Se=100%, Spe=73% ) and metastasis 99.05ng/ml (AUC
:0,78, Se=100% , Spe=70%). A significant correlation between high Gal-3 serum levels and presence of local tumor
spread (n=11/17, p:0.001), carcinomatosis (n=16/17, p:0.00), lymphoadenopathies (n=15/17, p:0.00) and metastasis
(n=11/17, p:0.003) related with recurrence disease was observed. Patients with recurrence of ovarian cancer presents
higher Gal-3 values compared to women with stable diseases. Gal-3 combined to CECT should be used to improve
the monitoring of EOC patients
Self-Assembly of Patchy Particles into Polymer Chains: A Parameter-Free Comparison between Wertheim Theory and Monte Carlo Simulation
We numerically study a simple fluid composed of particles having a hard-core
repulsion, complemented by two short-ranged attractive (sticky) spots at the
particle poles, which provides a simple model for equilibrium polymerization of
linear chains. The simplicity of the model allows for a close comparison, with
no fitting parameters, between simulations and theoretical predictions based on
the Wertheim perturbation theory, a unique framework for the analytic
prediction of the properties of self-assembling particle systems in terms of
molecular parameter and liquid state correlation functions. This theory has not
been subjected to stringent tests against simulation data for ordering across
the polymerization transition. We numerically determine many of the
thermodynamic properties governing this basic form of self-assembly (energy per
particle, order parameter or average fraction of particles in the associated
state, average chain length, chain length distribution, average end-to-end
distance of the chains, and the static structure factor) and find that
predictions of the Wertheim theory accord remarkably well with the simulation

Intramuscular fatty acid composition in beef from Aosta cattle breeds
The aim of this research was to compare fat quality of three categories of the Aosta cattle breeds by fatty acid composition. Samples of longissimus thoracis et lumborum from 12 calves, 11 young bulls and 11 cows of Aosta Red Pied and Black Pied were bought at retail. Fatty acids content showed in most cases, except for C18:1, significant differences between the three categories. Veal calves had the lowest proportion of SFA and highest of PUFA, therefore they had the best PUFA/SFA ratio but the worst n-6/n-3 ratio due to the highest proportion of C18:2n-6. Besides veal calves was healthier by having best atherogenicity and thrombogenicity indices. Black Pied young bulls, in comparison to Red Pied young bulls, showed a significant lower proportion of C10:0, C18:1, and a significant higher proportion of C18:2n-6, C18:3n-3 and C20:4n-6. Consequently they had a significant lower MUFA content but a higher PUFA content therefore a significant better PUFA/SFA ratio
Phytotoxic metabolites produced by fungi involvedin cork oak decline
Diplodia corticola, anamorph of Botryosphaeria corticola Phillips, Alves et Luque, and
Biscognauxia mediterranea (De Not.) O. Kuntze (= Hypoxylon mediterraneum) have often been
associated with serious decline phenomena, which have been affecting the cork oak forest in Italy
and other Mediterranean countries for several years. Diplodia corticola is widespread in Sardinian
oak forests, and can affect plants of different ages, inducing symptoms which include dieback,
cankers and vascular necrosis. These studies may provide information which could be useful for understanding the chemistry
and the biology governing the relationship between these fungi and their hosts. Further studies
should aim to also evaluate the ecological role of these substances
The relation of 12 lead ECG to the cardiac anatomy: The normal CineECG.
Abstract Background The interpretation of the 12‑lead ECG is notoriously difficult and requires experts to distinguish normal from abnormal ECG waveforms. ECG waveforms depend on body build and electrode positions, both often different in males and females. To relate the ECG waveforms to cardiac anatomical structures is even more difficult. The novel CineECG algorithm enables a direct projection of the 12‑lead ECG to the cardiac anatomy by computing the mean location of cardiac activity over time. The aim of this study is to investigate the cardiac locations of the CineECG derived from standard 12‑lead ECGs of normal subjects. Methods In this study we used 6525 12‑lead ECG tracings labelled as normal obtained from the certified Physionet PTB XL Diagnostic ECG Database to construct the CineECG. All 12 lead ECGs were analyzed, and then divided by age groups (18–29,30-39,40-49,50-59,60-69,70–100 years) and by gender (male/female). For each ECG, we computed the CineECG within a generic 3D heart/torso model. Based on these CineECG's, the average normal cardiac location and direction for QRS, STpeak, and TpeakTend segments were determined. Results The CineECG direction for the QRS segment showed large variation towards the left free wall, whereas the STT segments were homogeneously directed towards the septal/apical region. The differences in the CineECG location for the QRS, STpeak, and TpeakTend between the age and gender groups were relatively small (maximally 10 mm at end T-wave), although between the gender groups minor differences were found in the 4 chamber direction angles (QRS 4°, STpeak 5°, and TpeakTend 8°) and LAO (QRS 1°, STpeak 13°, and TpeakTend 30°). Conclusion CineECG demonstrated to be a feasible and pragmatic solution for ECG waveform interpretation, relating the ECG directly to the cardiac anatomy. The variations in depolarization and repolarization CineECG were small within this group of normal healthy controls, both in cardiac location as well as in direction. CineECG may enable an easier discrimination between normal and abnormal QRS and T-wave morphologies, reducing the amount of expert training. Further studies are needed to prove whether novel CineECG can significantly contribute to the discrimination of normal versus abnormal ECG tracings
