Semi-analytical solution of multilayer diffusion problems with time-varying boundary conditions and general interface conditions
We develop a new semi-analytical method for solving multilayer diffusion
problems with time-varying external boundary conditions and general internal
boundary conditions at the interfaces between adjacent layers. The convergence
rate of the semi-analytical method, relative to the number of eigenvalues, is
investigated and the effect of varying the interface conditions on the solution
behaviour is explored. Numerical experiments demonstrate that solutions can be
computed using the new semi-analytical method that are more accurate and more
efficient than the unified transform method of Sheils [Appl. Math. Model.,
46:450-464, 2017]. Furthermore, unlike classical analytical solutions and the
unified transform method, only the new semi-analytical method is able to
correctly treat problems with both time-varying external boundary conditions
and a large number of layers. The paper is concluded by replicating solutions
to several important industrial, environmental and biological applications
previously reported in the literature, demonstrating the wide applicability of

Fast computation of effective diffusivities using a semi-analytical solution of the homogenization boundary value problem for block locally-isotropic heterogeneous media
Direct numerical simulation of diffusion through heterogeneous media can be
difficult due to the computational cost of resolving fine-scale
heterogeneities. One method to overcome this difficulty is to homogenize the
model by replacing the spatially-varying fine-scale diffusivity with an
effective diffusivity calculated from the solution of an appropriate boundary
value problem. In this paper, we present a new semi-analytical method for
solving this boundary value problem and computing the effective diffusivity for
pixellated, locally-isotropic, heterogeneous media. We compare our new solution
method to a standard finite volume method and show that equivalent accuracy can
be achieved in less computational time for several standard test cases. We also
demonstrate how the new solution method can be applied to complex heterogeneous
geometries represented by a grid of blocks. These results indicate that our new
semi-analytical method has the potential to significantly speed up simulations
of diffusion in heterogeneous media.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures, 5 table
Achievement goals, self-handicapping, and performance: A 2 × 2 achievement goal perspective
Elliot and colleagues (2006) examined the effects of experimentally induced achievement goals, proposed by the
trichotomous model, on self-handicapping and performance in physical education. Our study replicated and extended the
work of Elliot et al. by experimentally promoting all four goals proposed by the 262 model (Elliot & McGregor, 2001),
measuring the participants’ own situational achievement goals, using a relatively novel task, and testing the participants in a group setting. We used a randomized experimental design with four conditions that aimed to induce one of the four goals advanced by the 262 model. The participants (n¼138) were undergraduates who engaged in a dart-throwing task. The results pertaining to self-handicapping partly replicated Elliot and colleagues’ findings by showing that experimentally promoted performance-avoidance goals resulted in less practice. In contrast, the promotion of mastery-avoidance goals did
not result in less practice compared with either of the approach goals. Dart-throwing performance did not differ among the four goal conditions. Personal achievement goals did not moderate the effects of experimentally induced goals on selfhandicapping and performance. The extent to which mastery-avoidance goals are maladaptive is discussed, as well as the interplay between personal and experimentally induced goals
Phylogeography of Stable Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Estimated by Diversity at Ribosomal 16S and Cytochrome Oxidase I Mitochondrial Genes
The blood-feeding cosmopolitan stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae), is thought to disperse rapidly and widely, and earlier studies of allozyme variation were consistent with high vagility in this species. The geographic origins of New World populations are unknown. Diversity at mitochondrial loci r16S and cytochrome oxidase I was examined in 277 stable flies from 11 countries, including five zoogeographical regions. Of 809 nucleotides, 174 were polymorphic and 133 were parsimony informative. Seventy-six haplotypes were found in frequencies consistent with the Wright–Fisher infinite allele model. None were shared among four or more zoogeographical regions. The null hypothesis of mutation neutrality was not rejected, thereby validating the observed distribution. Fifty-nine haplotypes were singular, eight were private and confined to the Old World, and three of 76 haplotypes were shared between the Old and New World. Only 19 haplotypes were found in the New World, 14 of which were singletons. Haplotype and nucleotide diversities were heterogeneous among countries and regions. The most diversity was observed in sub-Saharan Africa. Regional differentiation indices were GRT = 0.26 and NRT = 0.31, indicating populations were highly structured macrogeographically. Palearctic and New World flies were the least differentiated from each other. There were strong genetic similarities among populations in the Nearctic, Neotropical, and Palearctic regions, and it is most likely that New World populations were derived from the Palearctic after 1492 CE, in the colonial era
Facile Protocol for Water-Tolerant “Frustrated Lewis Pair”-Catalyzed Hydrogenation
Despite rapid advances in the field of metal-free, “frustrated Lewis pair” (FLP)-catalyzed hydrogenation, the need for strictly anhydrous reaction conditions has hampered wide-scale uptake of this methodology. Herein, we report that, despite the generally perceived moisture sensitivity of FLPs, 1,4-dioxane solutions of B(C6F5)3 actually show appreciable moisture tolerance and can catalyze hydrogenation of a range of weakly basic substrates without the need for rigorously inert conditions. In particular, reactions can be performed directly in commercially available nonanhydrous solvents without subsequent drying or use of internal desiccants
Virus taxonomy: the database of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)
The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) is charged with the task of developing, refining, and maintaining a universal virus taxonomy. This task encompasses the classification of virus species and higher-level taxa according to the genetic and biological properties of their members; naming virus taxa; maintaining a database detailing the currently approved taxonomy; and providing the database, supporting proposals, and other virus-related information from an open-access, public web site. The ICTV web site (http://ictv.global) provides access to the current taxonomy database in online and downloadable formats, and maintains a complete history of virus taxa back to the first release in 1971. The ICTV has also published the ICTV Report on Virus Taxonomy starting in 1971. This Report provides a comprehensive description of all virus taxa covering virus structure, genome structure, biology and phylogenetics. The ninth ICTV report, published in 2012, is available as an open-access online publication from the ICTV web site. The current, 10th report (http://ictv.global/report/), is being published online, and is replacing the previous hard-copy edition with a completely open access, continuously updated publication. No other database or resource exists that provides such a comprehensive, fully annotated compendium of information on virus taxa and taxonomy

The role of right and left parietal lobes in the conceptual processing of numbers
Neuropsychological and functional imaging studies have associated the conceptual processing of numbers with bilateral parietal regions (including intraparietal sulcus). However, the processes driving these effects remain unclear because both left and right posterior parietal regions are activated by many other conceptual, perceptual, attention, and response-selection processes. To dissociate parietal activation that is number-selective from parietal activation related to other stimulus or response-selection processes, we used fMRI to compare numbers and object names during exactly the same conceptual and perceptual tasks while factoring out activations correlating with response times. We found that right parietal activation was higher for conceptual decisions on numbers relative to the same tasks on object names, even when response time effects were fully factored out. In contrast, left parietal activation for numbers was equally involved in conceptual processing of object names. We suggest that left parietal activation for numbers reflects a range of processes, including the retrieval of learnt facts that are also involved in conceptual decisions on object names. In contrast, number selectivity in right parietal cortex reflects processes that are more involved in conceptual decisions on numbers than object names. Our results generate a new set of hypotheses that have implications for the design of future behavioral and functional imaging studies of patients with left and right parietal damage
Observation of a temperature dependent electrical resistance minimum above the magnetic ordering temperature in GdPdSi
Results on electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, magnetic Results on
electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, magnetic susceptibility, heat
capacity and Gd Mossbauer measurements on a Gd-based intermetallic compound,
GdPdSi are reported. A finding of interest is that the resistivity
unexpectedly shows a well-defined minimum at about 45 K, well above the long
range magnetic ordering temperature (21 K), a feature which gets suppressed by
the application of a magnetic field. This observation in a Gd alloy presents an
interesting scenario. On the basis of our results, we propose electron
localization induced by s-f (or d-f) exchange interaction prior to long range
magnetic order as a mechanism for the electrical resistance minimum.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
