The heat-health nexus in the urban context: A systematic literature review exploring the socio-economic vulnerabilities and built environment characteristics
Abstract Of all-natural disasters, extreme high temperatures events are the main cause of weather-related mortality. The compact urban settings of cities, the dependency on infrastructural systems as well as the larger concentration of people and economic activities make urban areas particularly vulnerable to health risks due to heat. To investigate vulnerabilities to heat, the study illustrates how vulnerability factors together with the hazard and the urban parameters determine the nexus between the heat and the health outcome, here called heat-health nexus. Peer-reviewed articles with no language limitations were searched from the first available record subjected to the imposed selection criteria. First, the information related to the study area were analysed, taking into consideration the level of resolution to investigate the scale of analysis. Then, the specific hazard parameters, divided in simple or combined weather indices, were evaluated. For sensitivity and adaptive capacity aspects, the study considered four distinct categories of determinants: mental and physical health, demographics, social and economic status. Finally, when looking at enhanced exposure, groups of determinants of vulnerability, divided between those describing indoor and outdoor environment conditions were analysed. Results demonstrated a heterogeneous spatial distribution of the identified case studies about heat and health in the urban context and highlighted different characteristics related to climate hazard, exposure, vulnerability and enhanced exposure factors in relation to the health of the population. This literature review demonstrate that a detailed identification of sensitivity, adaptive capacity and enhanced exposure elements is crucial in the implementation of effective adaptation measures in the health context
Crystal Engineering in the design of New Solid Pharmaceutical Forms with enhanced pharmaceutical properties
High-efficiency drugs and pharmaceutical formulations, produced in a sustainable way, and that present a favorable performance are widely required in Public Health. Among the pharmacokinetic properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), the solubility is main variable since it regulate the availability in the biological target. Numerous formulations on the market and in the National Health System (SUS) present serious drawbacks related to quality, manufacture and performance. In general, APIs are delivered in solid formulations and this characteristic represents a challenge for industry and academia since the therapeutic efficiency of and APIs is related to their crystalline structure, i.d structural multiplicity, polymorphism and composition. APIs may exist in different forms presenting different pharmacokinetic profiles. In addition, the characterization of the diversities of solid forms of an IFA, constitutes an innovative strategy to optimize pharmaceutical properties, providing opportunities for the creation of intellectual property and innovation for the country. In this work we will discuss several strategies related to the problem aiming to show the importance in the pharmaceutical area of solid state techniques like crystal engineering.High-efficiency drugs and pharmaceutical formulations, produced in a sustainable way, and that present a favorable performance are widely required in Public Health. Probiotic Yoghourt for Health, Nutrition and Women\u27s Empowerment in Kenya: A Community-Based Approach
The dissertation aims to examine the impacts of probiotic yoghourt on health, nutrition and women’s empowerment within the context of HIV/AIDS in Kenya. Mixed methods that combine quantiative and qualitative approaches are used to understand the effects of probiotic yoghourt on the health, nutrition and quality of life for men and women. Results of the quantiative analysis (n=227) demonstrated that the probiotic yoghourt confers a variety of health benefits – physiological (fewer urogenital conditions and digestive problems; reduced dependence on medical treatment), and psychological (perceived improvements with bodily appearance, felt an increased meaningfulness with life). Results of the qualitative analysis (n=26) revealed an overall improved quality of life based on the six domains of the WHOQOL assessment tool.
A supplemental qualtiative study and analysis that examines the ways in which this health and development initiative promotes empowerment, social and economic development revealed that while there are substantial and important direct and indirect benefits, there are challenges with group dynamics, class, and power structures.
Theoretically, the study highlights the need to revisit the group approach of health and development projects. While this method undebiably empowers the women at the individual level within a number of domains, the group structure can be cosnidered to counteract some of the gains and positive effects. Methodologically, the research shows the value of employing a mixed methods design. Usually, biomedical research using clinical study designs do not adopt mixed methods to describe the experiences of the participants. Building on the survey findings, deeper and richer insights into the impacts of the probiotic yoghourt on the health and quality of life of participants is gained. Lastly, the findings from this research provides a platform for policy makers to re-examine the importance and need to incorporate nutritional support programmes that are holistic and mutli-faceted, targeting marginalized groups
DISCRIMINATION TOWARDS MOSLEM AS DEPICTED IN KABIR KHAN’S NEW YORK MOVIE
Keywords: stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, Moslem in America, theSeptember 11th tragedyThe September 11th is a historical and social tragedy affect Moslem in America. The tragedy triggers stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination towards Moslem by American. The film entitled New York directed by Kabir Khan, points out the discrimination towards Moslem post the September 11th tragedy. The research employs sociological approach in order to investigate and provide insights into how American behavior toward Moslem after the September 11thtragedy. The research approach directs the discussion to use scientific method to establish parameters that help make sure results of the research are objective and accurate and applying discrimination theory that allows two steps followed to interpret and analyze the data: stereotypes and prejudice. The discussion of the study reveals that the September 11th tragedy triggers stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination toward Moslem by other Americans. Furthermore, Kabir Khan’s New York shows most of unfair treatments are brought from the reality on the field into this film. However, Kabir Khan also adds dramatic effects to each of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination scenesto emphasize the effort to diminish stereotypes and generalization toward religion. Moreover, it is suggested for the next researchers to conduct a study on the same film using other approaches. For example, Psychological approach, whichperspective can be used to analyze the psychological condition of the Moslemcharacter through War on Terror and discrimination. It seems that the September 11th tragedy, psychologically has caused dramatic changes toward several characters such as Sameer and Zilgai
