Nasty Nazis and Extreme Americans: Cloning, Eugenics, and the Exchange of National Signifiers in Contemporary Science Fiction
This article addresses German science fiction novels from the last ten to fifteen years, specifically those that thematize cloning and/or eugenics. The main novels under discussion include Die verbesserte Frau by Barbara Kirchner, Duplik Jonas 7 by Birgit Rabisch, and Blueprint/Blaupause by Charlotte Kerner, (which was released as a film adaptation starring Franka Potente in 2004). This discussion shows how these and similar novels do or do not contend with the legacy of Nazi eugenics and reproductive experimentation, and second, how the existent historical awareness in the novels relates to the content of debates on current issues of biotechnology, including those by JĂĽrgen Habermas, Slavoj Zizek, and Peter Sloterdijk. The article concludes by bringing these debates to bear on cultural cross-referencing in comparative examples of American texts (Gattaca [1997], The Island [2005], to name two), which tend to imbue frightening aspects of reproductive technologies with signifiers of Nazism, while the German texts tend to implicate America as the future source of nightmarish reproductive possibilities
The legacy of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen as reflected in select late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century film media
Richard Wagner is one of the most important and influential composers for scholars of film music. His concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk or "total art work," which combined music, visuals and storytelling, played an indelible role in the creation of film aesthetics, especially with regard to music and sound design. Yet, Wagner's actual music has its own curious legacy in film history, in terms of how it is used to interact with a story that often bears no relation to those of Wagner's operas. This is particularly interesting with regard to the Der Ring des Nibelungen (aka "the Ring Cycle"). The Ring is his most ambitious and influential, and densest work, and perhaps the one with the greatest lingering legacy in popular culture. For example, "Ride of the Valkyries," an excerpt from Die WalkĂĽre made famous by Looney Tunes shorts and Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, is still a frequent presence in film, television and advertising that want to evoke sounds of war and conquest--associations created more from its use in those contexts than the original opera.
This thesis will examine films and television series of the last half-century that have used musical examples from the Ring in their soundtracks. Works given particular focus will include Apocalypse Now (1979), the Japanese anime series Princess Tutu (2002-2003) and Terrence Malick's historical romance The New World (2006). The examination will discern both how film media has influenced modern cultural perceptions of the original operas--and of Wagner's legacy in general--and also how said film media is itself a reflection of modern attitudes about Wagner and his masterwork
Beyond the Brim of the Hat: Kinematics of Globular Clusters out to Large Radius in the Sombrero Galaxy
We have obtained radial velocity measurements for 51 new globular clusters
around the Sombrero galaxy. These measurements were obtained using
spectroscopic observations from the AAOmega spectrograph on the
Anglo-Australian Telescope and the Hydra spectrograph at WIYN. Combined with
our own past measurements and velocity measurements obtained from the
literature we have constructed a large database of radial velocities that
contains a total of 360 confirmed globular clusters. Previous studies' analyses
of the kinematics and mass profile of the Sombrero globular cluster system have
been constrained to the inner ~9' (~24 kpc or ~5 effective radii), but our new
measurements have increased the radial coverage of the data, allowing us to
determine the kinematic properties of M104 out to ~15' (~41 kpc or ~9 effective
radii). We use our set of radial velocities to study the GC system kinematics
and to determine the mass profile and V-band mass-to-light profile of the
galaxy. We find that the V-band mass-to-light ratio increases from 4.5 at the
center to a value of 20.9 at 41 kpc (~9 effective radii or 15'), which implies
that the dark matter halo extends to the edge of our available data set. We
compare our mass profile at 20 kpc (~4 effective radii or ~7.4') to the mass
computed from x-ray data and find good agreement. We also use our data to look
for rotation in the globular cluster system as a whole, as well as in the red
and blue subpopulations. We find no evidence for significant rotation in any of
these samples.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal; 23 pages, 14

The positive predictive value of the PHQ-2 as a screener for depression in Spanish-Speaking Latinx, English-speaking Latinx, and non-Latinx White primary care patients.
Although the Patient Health Questionnaire 2 (PHQ-2) is frequently used to screen for depressive disorders in primary care patients, there is little information about its psychometric properties in diverse populations. The present study evaluated the positive predictive value (PPV) of the PHQ-2 in three groups of primary care patients at a federally qualified health center (78% female, M age = 42.73 years, range 18–78): Spanish-speaking Latinxs (n = 490), English-speaking Latinxs (n = 134), and non-Latinx Whites (n = 690). Universal screening with the PHQ-2 of consecutive adult primary care patients took place during a 5-month period. Any “yes” response to the 2 items on the PHQ-2 resulted in the administration of the full PHQ-9. Scores ≥10 on the PHQ-9 were used to index probable major depressive disorder. Data for this study were extracted from patient electronic medical records. Binary logistic regressions indicated the PPV of the PHQ-2 overall was 69.1%. PPVs were highest in English-speaking Latinx patients (73.1%) and non-Latinx White patients (72.8%), and significantly lower in the Spanish-speaking Latinx patient group (62.9%). Discrepancies in PPVs remained even after controlling for demographic variables (age, gender, uninsured). The PHQ-2 had a 35% greater false discovery rate in Latinxs who are less acculturated, as indexed by self-reported preferred language, but performs comparably in acculturated Latinx and non-Latinx White groups. The PHQ-2 may overidentify mood disorders in Spanish-speaking primary care patients

Effects of Language Concordance and Interpreter Use on Therapeutic Alliance in Spanish-Speaking Integrated Behavioral Health Care Patients
The discrepancy between the growing number of Spanish speakers in the U.S. and the availability of bilingual providers creates a barrier to accessing quality mental health care. Use of interpreters provides one strategy for overcoming this linguistic barrier; however, concerns about whether sessions with interpreters, versus bilingual providers, impede therapeutic alliance remain. The current study explored associations between the use of interpreters and therapeutic alliance in a sample of 458 Spanish-speaking patients seen for integrated behavioral health visits at primary care clinics. Patients completed a brief (4 item) therapeutic alliance scale at their behavioral health appointment. In addition, to supplement the quantitative study data, a pilot study of 30 qualitative interviews was conducted with a new sample of 10 Spanish-speaking patients, 10 behavioral health consultants (BHCs), and 10 trained interpreters. Quantitative results showed that interpreter use did not relate to therapeutic alliance, even when controlling for relevant demographic variables. However, qualitative interviews suggested major themes regarding the relative benefits and challenges of using interpreters for patients, interpreters, and BHCs. In interviews, patients expressed a strong preference for bilingual providers. Benefits included greater privacy, sense of trust, and accuracy of communication. However, in their absence, interpreters were seen as increasing access to services and facilitating communication with providers, thereby addressing the behavioral health needs of patients with limited English proficiency. BHCs and interpreters emphasized the importance of interpreter training and a good collaborative relationship with interpreters to minimize negative effects on the quality of care
