Design, Engineering Analysis, and Fabrication of a Prototype Electromechanical Finger Fixator Control System
This paper investigates a new external fixator system for treating finger contractures. This innovative system is electric and user-friendly, providing precise readings of the angles of diseased finger joints. Accurate measurements of the angles of the diseased finger joints can assist therapists and patients during rehabilitation procedures. The fixator consists of ten parts assembled using polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) for the plastic components and stainless steel for the metal components. The design model was engineered, drawn, and analyzed using SolidWorks Computer-Aided Design software. The verification process utilizes finite element analysis to demonstrate that the maximum stress was lower than the yield strength of the chosen materials. As a result, the new device design is robust and stable enough to withstand the anticipated loading conditions of human fingers. Subsequently, a prototype was fabricated using advanced additive manufacturing technology, specifically fused deposition modeling (FDM). The proposed fixator is simple to control, reliable, easy to use, and reproducible. It enables device users to exercise their finger joints throughout the day without requiring the assistance of specialists
"So the World Will Know Our Story": Ethical Reflections on Research with Families Displaced by War
In this article we examine the ethical implications of a qualitative research study exploring the everyday mobilities of Syrian families displaced in Lebanon. The multiple methods of data collection - collaborative family interviews, children's drawing and mapmaking, GIS-tracked neighborhood walks, and activity logging - encouraged children and family voices. At the same time, these methods provide an opportunity to explore family networks, relationships, and environments that are impacting their lives in the context of war and displacement. These methods, like all research with vulnerable populations, also raise several ethical questions. Using a process of ethical reflexivity, we discuss six ethical points related to both procedural and micro-ethics. In addition to shedding light on the importance of uncovering the everyday experiences of refugees using creative methods, we suggest broader ethical implications regarding how we respectfully work with vulnerable populations while still upholding research integrity.In diesem Beitrag befassen wir uns mit den ethischen Implikationen einer qualitativen Studie zu MobilitĂ€t im Alltag von syrischen Familien, die angesichts des Krieges in Syrien in den Libanon geflohen sind. Die Daten wurden mit verschiedenen Methoden erhoben - mit kollaborativen Familieninterviews, Zeichnungen und Karten von Kindern, GIS-unterstĂŒtzten SpaziergĂ€ngen sowie einem Logbuch fĂŒr AktivitĂ€ten - wodurch insbesondere die Teilnahme von Kindern und Familien ermöglicht wurde. Diese Methoden erlaubten es, familiĂ€re Netzwerke und Beziehungen zu untersuchen und auch die Umwelten zu erfassen, die auf das Leben der Familien nach Krieg und Flucht einwirken. Unser Vorgehen, wie im Grunde jede Erforschung von vulnerablen Gruppen, war von ethischen Fragen begleitet. Auf Basis eines ethischen Reflexionsprozesses diskutieren wir in diesem Beitrag sechs Punkte, die sowohl mit Fragen der prozeduralen Ethik als auch mit Fragen der Mikro-Ethik verbunden sind. Dabei unterstreichen wir die Bedeutung von kreativen Forschungsmethoden, die es erlauben, alltĂ€gliche Erfahrungen von geflĂŒchteten Familien zu erfassen. DarĂŒber hinaus besprechen wir weiter gefasste ethische Implikationen, insbesondere wie sich eine respektvolle Arbeit mit vulnerablen Bevölkerungsgruppen mit einer GewĂ€hrleistung der IntegritĂ€t als Forschende verbinden lĂ€sst
HEPATOPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY OF MONASCUS PURPUREUS (RED RICE YEAST) IN DIABETIC RATS ALONE OR IN COMBINATION WITH PIOGLITAZONE: AN EFFECT MEDIATED THROUGH CYTOKINES, ANTIOXIDANTS AND LIPID BIOMARKERS
Objective: Diabetes induces many complications such as cardiovascular problems, cataracts, kidney damage and polyneuropathy. Streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetes is considered one of the most common animal models in rats. The present study investigated the effects of Monascus purpureus (MP) alone or in combination with pioglitazone on glucose level and on liver in streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic rats.Methods: In this study were divided into five experimental groups (normal, untreated STZ-diabetic (60 mg/kg B.W., IP), treated STZ-diabetic with Monascus purpureus (500 mg/kg B. W, oral), treated STZ-diabetic with pioglitazone (10 mg/kg B.W., oral) and treated STZ-diabetic with MP (250 mg/kg B. W, oral)+pioglitazone (10 mg/kg B.W., oral)). Treatment continued for 14 d then blood sampling was done to assess blood glucose. At the end of the study, the animals were fasted overnight, anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (60 mg/kg i.p.), and sacrificed to collect tissues samples (liver, pancreases).Results: Throughout the experimental period, all treatments significantly (P<.05) lowered serum glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, c-peptide and IL-6. In addition, hepatic cholesterol and triglycerides levels were also lowered. Moreover, the treated diabetic rats showed higher activity of reduced glutathione (P<.05) in the liver compared with the diabetic control rats and inhibited diabetes induced elevation in the level of malondialdehyde in liver.Conclusion: The results of this study clearly demonstrated that MP act by many ways, including anti-hyperglycemic, antioxidant effects and pancreatic ĂÂČ-cell protection. From these points, it seems that MP may be a useful supplement to alleviate the development of diabetes and its complications
TOPICAL BENZOPHENONE-3 MICROEMULSION-BASED GELS: PREPARATION, EVALUATION AND DETERMINATION OF MICROBIOLOGICAL UV BLOCKING ACTIVITY
Objective: Microemulsions (MEs) have been developed as active vehicles for sunscreens being physical sunscreens on their own.The aim of this study is to incorporate Benzophenone-3 (BZ-3), a chemical sunscreening agent into MEs resulting in a synergistic effect on its protective characteristics.
Methods: Screening of BZ-3 in different oils, surfactants and cosurfactants available for topical delivery was carried out. A full factorial study design (3.22) was adopted to study the effect of three independent variables namely;BZ-3, oil, and S/CoSmix(1:1) concentrations on the in-vitro SPF value of the prepared ME gel formulae.
Results: Formulae having SPF>30 were further evaluated regarding in-vitro permeation test. Finally, an in vitro microbiological assay was adopted to compare the survival percent of E.coli against UV exposure. Formula F11IPM ME gel consisting of 3% BZ-3 and 10% Isopropyl myristate as oil together with 60% w/w Tween80/Cremophore RH40 mix (1:1)as surfactant and cosurfactant respectively was chosen as the optimum formula having an in vitro SPF of 33.15ñ0.91,lowest permeation of 192ñ16.13Ôg/cm2 after eight hours and microbiological UV blocking activity of 88ñ5.84%which is not significantly different from the standard Spectra Ban plus (SPF=30) having a survival percent of 80ñ3.04%.
Conclusion: This study illustrated the potential use of microemulsified BZ-3 delivery system to improve the SPF of BZ-3

Tumor-Associated Macrophage (TAM) and Angiogenesis in Human Colon Carcinoma
AIM: This study aimed to clarify how macrophages affect prognosis in cancer colon and their association with tumor angiogenesis.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty four biopsies of colon carcinoma and 15 of benign adenomatous polyps were investigated for macrophages infiltration and microvessels density using immunohistochemistry and image morphometric analysis. Macrophages and blood vessels were stained immunohistochemically by CD68 and F-VIII markers respectively. The morphometric analysis was carried out on the immunohistochemically stained slides using the Leica Qwin 500 Image Analyzer. Both of macrophages infiltration and microvessels density were correlated with histological tumor grade, stage and lymph node metastases and were correlated with each others.RESULTS: Macrophage infiltration was significantly higher in malignant cases than in benign polyps. High macrophage infiltration and hypervascularity were significantly correlated with T-staging and lymph nodes metastasis. A significant correlation was found between macrophage infiltration and microvessels densitie in malignant tumors where hypervascularity was significantly correlated with high macrophages infiltration.CONCLUSION: The significant correlation between macrophage infiltration and tumor angiogenesis suggests an interaction between macrophages and cancer cells stimulating microvessels formation, tumor invasion and metastasis in colon cancer. We recommend that macrophages infiltration should be evaluated to investigate their clinical value in development of individualized therapeutic regimens for management of colon carcinoma
Performing the Egyptian revolution : origins of collective restraint action in the Midan
This research was supported by a Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland grant.In January/February 2011, the world watched with admiration the Egyptian revolution that toppled President Housni Mubarak. The demonstration in Midan al-Tahrir (Liberation Square in central Cairo), which was the nucleus of the revolution, highlighted a largely spontaneous, civil and peaceful political performance. However, this performance was temporary, contradicting subsequent bloody conflicts in post-revolutionary Egypt. This article examines the socio-political origins of the Midan performance. It argues that the demonstrators exercised collective restraint, which was temporary but necessary, in order to topple Mubarak. Building on Norbert Eliasâ civilising process theory and social movements literature, it is argued that the origins of this performance are found in a collective knowledge of regime strategy and narrative, Egyptian socio-political values and existing repertoires of contention. Drawing on primary sources and semi-structured interviews, the article contends that the demonstrators exercised collective restraint to reframe regime narrative and draw public support for the revolution.PostprintPeer reviewe
Patterns of hepatocellular carcinoma incidence in Egypt from a population-based cancer registry
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing worldwide, and is frequently attributed to rising rates of hepatitis C virus infection and interactions between viral and environmental risk factors. Because of Egypt's unique risk factor profile, we analyzed data from the Gharbiah Population-Based Cancer Registry for the period 1999â2003 to characterize demographic and geographic patterns of cases in this province. Methods:â We calculated age- and sex-specific and age- and sex-standardized HCC incidence rates for the eight districts in Gharbiah. We also compared rates from Gharbiah with the USA (US Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results [SEER] database). Results:â The analysis revealed a higher incidence in males than in females, significant geographic variations among districts, and a higher incidence in Gharbiah than that reported by SEER. Conclusion:â The findings of this study document the heterogeneous distribution of HCC at regional and international levels.
