Solving random diffusion models with nonlinear perturbations by the Wiener-Hermite expansion method
[EN] This paper deals with the construction of approximate series solutions of random nonlinear diffusion equations where nonlinearity is considered by means of a frank small parameter and uncertainty is introduced through white noise in the forcing term. For the simpler but important case in which the diffusion coefficient is time independent, we provide a Gaussian approximation of the solution stochastic process by taking advantage of the Wiener¿Hermite expansion together with the perturbation method. In addition, approximations of the main statistical functions associated with a solution, such as the mean and variance, are computed. Numerical values of these functions are compared with respect to those obtained by applying the Runge¿Kutta second-order stochastic scheme as an illustrative example.This work was partially supported by the Spanish M.C.Y.T. and FEDER grants MTM2009-08587, TRA2007-68006-C02-02,

This paper deals with the computation of the first probability density function of the
solution of random homogeneous linear second-order difference equations by the Random Variable Transformation method. This approach allows us to generalize the classical solution obtained in the deterministic scenario. Bilateral Concurrent Benign Phyllodes Tumor in a 43-Year-Old Female: A Case Report.
Phyllodes tumor is considered a rare form of breast tissue neoplasm that presents as a rapidly growing painless mass. This neoplasm is classified as benign, borderline, or malignant and standard treatment consists of surgical excision with clear margins. The vast majority of reported cases have described the unilateral presentation of this tumor, making bilateral presentation a rare find. Our case describes a 43-year-old Hispanic woman with a history of fibroadenomas who was found to have concurrent benign bilateral phyllodes tumors

Probabilistic solution of random SI-type epidemiological models using the Random Variable Transformation technique
[EN] This paper presents a full probabilistic description of the solution of random SI-type epidemiological models which are based on nonlinear differential equations. This description consists of determining: the first probability density function of the solution in terms of the density functions of the diffusion coefficient and the initial condition, which are assumed to be independent random variables; the expectation and variance functions of the solution as well as confidence intervals and, finally, the distribution of time until a given proportion of susceptibles remains in the population. The obtained formulas are general since they are valid regardless the probability distributions assigned to the random inputs. We also present a pair of illustrative examples including in one of them the application

Some recommendations for applying gPC (generalized polynomial chaos) to modeling: An analysis through the Airy random differential equation
In this paper we study the use of the generalized polynomial chaos method to differential equations describing a model that depends on more than one random input. This random input can be in the form of parameters or of initial or boundary conditions. We investigate the effect of the choice of the probability density functions for the inputs on the output stochastic processes. The study is performed on the Airy¿s differential equation. This equation is a good test case since its solutions are highly oscillatory and errors can develop both in the amplitude and the phase. Amorphous Mo₅O₁₄-Type/Carbon Nanocomposite with Enhanced Electrochemical Capability for Lithium-Ion Batteries
An amorphous MomO3m−1/carbon nanocomposite (m ≈ 5) is fabricated from a citrate–gel precursor heated at moderate temperature (500 °C) in inert (argon) atmosphere. The as-prepared Mo5O14-type/C material is compared to α-MoO3 synthesized from the same precursor in air. The morphology and microstructure of the as-prepared samples are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman scattering (RS) spectroscopy. Thermal gravimetry and elemental analysis indicate the presence of 25.8 ± 0.2% of carbon in the composite. The SEM images show that Mo5O14 is immersed inside a honeycomb-like carbon matrix providing high surface area. The RS spectrum of Mo5O14/C demonstrates an oxygen deficiency in the molybdenum oxide and the presence of a partially graphitized carbon. Outstanding improvement in electrochemical performance is obtained for the Mo5O14 encapsulated by carbon in comparison with the carbon-free MoO3. View Full-Tex
Specific Cellular Immune Response and Cytokine Patterns in Patients Coinfected with Hepatitis C Virus and Schistosoma mansoni
Patients coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and Schistosoma mansoni show high incidence of viral persistence and accelerated fibrosis. To determine whether immunological mechanisms are responsible for this alteration in the natural history of HCV, the HCV-specific peripheral CD4+ T cell responses and cytokines were analyzed in patients with chronic hepatitis C monoinfection, S. mansoni monoinfection, or HCV and S. mansoni coinfection. An HCV-specific CD4+ proliferative response to at least 1 HCV antigen was detected in 73.3% of patients infected with HCV, compared with 8.6% of patients coinfected with HCV and S. mansoni. Stimulation with HCV antigens produced a type 1 cytokine profile in patients infected with HCV alone, compared with a type 2 predominance in patients coinfected with HCV and S. mansoni. In contrast, there was no difference in response to schistosomal antigens in patients infected with S. mansoni alone, compared with those coinfected with HCV and S. mansoni. These findings suggest that the inability to generate an HCV-specific CD4+/Th1 T cell response plays a role in the persistence and severity of HCV infection in patients with S. mansoni coinfectio
