金沢大学工学部This paper addresses a thermal gas-flow simulation in gas circuit-breaker (GCB) chambers, introducing SF6 gas constants up to a pressure of 10 MPa and to a temperature of 30 000 K. In the simulation, moving parts, such as nozzle, movable arcing contact, and operating rod, are moved with the opening motion of GCB to see if different results are produced from the conventional simulation method, in which fixed parts in the real GCB are moved. As a result, as far as the pressure profile in the puffer chamber is concerned, it is confirmed that this simulation method can produce better results than the conventional method for the hybrid-puffer-type chamber. © 2005 IEEE

Intimal sarcoma from the iliac artery

We present a rare case of intimal sarcoma arising from the common iliac artery in an 82-year-old man who presented with intermittent claudication. He had undergone endovascular therapy with self-expanding stents to both iliac arteries that had occluded soon after placement. After salvage bypass grafting, a diagnosis of intimal sarcoma with angiosarcoma phenotype from the iliac artery was made. Further bypass graft surgery relieved symptoms temporarily. However, the tumor progressed and the left limb became ischemic. The chemotherapy of eribulin did not prevent tumor progression. The patient died of the disease 20 months after the first surgery

Objective: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a degenerative disease characterized by progressive cartilage degeneration, abnormal bone remodeling, and chronic pain. In this study, we aimed to investigate effective therapies to reverse or suppress TMJOA progression. Design: To this end, we performed intravenous administration of serum free conditioned media from human exfoliated deciduous teeth stem cells (SHED-CM) into a mechanical-stress induced murine TMJOA model. Results: SHED-CM administration markedly suppressed temporal muscle inflammation, and improved bone integrity and surface smoothness of the destroyed condylar cartilage. Moreover, SHED-CM treatment decreased the number of IL-1β, iNOS, and MMP-13 expressing chondrocytes, whereas it specifically increased PCNA-positive cells in the multipotent polymorphic cell layer. Notably, the numbers of TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL)-positive apoptotic chondrocytes in the SHED-CM treated condyles were significantly lower than in those treated with DMEM, whereas the proteoglycan positive area was restored to a level similar to that of the sham treated group, demonstrating that SHED-CM treatment regenerated the mechanical-stress injured condylar cartilage and subchondral bone. Secretome analysis revealed that SHED-CM contained multiple therapeutic factors that act in osteochondral regeneration. Conclusions: Our data demonstrated that SHED-CM treatment promoted the regeneration and repair of mechanical-stress induced mouse TMJOA. Our observations suggest that SHED-CM has potential to be a potent tissue-regenerating therapeutic agent for patients with severe TMJOA

    SHED-CM Ameliorates Neuropathic Pain

In neuropathic pain (NP), injury or diseases of the somatosensory system often result in highly debilitating chronic pain. Currently, there is no effective drug for the complete and definitive treatment of NP. We investigated the therapeutic potential of conditioned medium (CM) derived from stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED-CM) against NP using a mouse partial sciatic nerve ligation (PSL) model. Abnormal pain sensation, such as tactile allodynia and hyperalgesia, can be caused by PSL. In the behavioral test, intravenous administration of SHED-CM greatly improved the PSL-induced hypersensitivity. We found that treatment with SHED-CM resulted in the recruitment of M2 macrophages in the injured sciatic nerve and ipsilateral L4/L5 dorsal root ganglion and suppressed microglial activation in the spinal cord. Notably, specific depletion of the anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages by mannosylated-Clodrosome markedly reduced the antinociceptive effect of SHED-CM. Intravenous administration of CM from M2 induced by SHED-CM (M2-CM) ameliorated the PSL-induced hypersensitivity. We found that M2-CM directly suppressed the expression of nociceptive receptors as well as proinflammatory mediators in Schwann cells. Taken together, our data suggest that SHED-CM ameliorates NP through the induction of the analgesic anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages. Thus, SHED-CM may be a novel therapeutic candidate for NP

Proton inelastic scattering to continuum studied with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics

Intermediate energy (p,p'x) reaction is studied with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) in the cases of 58^{58}Ni target with Ep=120E_p = 120 MeV and 12^{12}C target with Ep=E_p = 200 and 90 MeV. Angular distributions for various EpE_{p'} energies are shown to be reproduced well without any adjustable parameter, which shows the reliability and usefulness of AMD in describing light-ion reactions. Detailed analyses of the calculations are made in the case of 58^{58}Ni target and following results are obtained: Two-step contributions are found to be dominant in some large angle region and to be indispensable for the reproduction of data. Furthermore the reproduction of data in the large angle region \theta \agt 120^\circ for EpE_{p'} = 100 MeV is shown to be due to three-step contributions. Angular distributions for E_{p'} \agt 40 MeV are found to be insensitive to the choice of different in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections σNN\sigma_{NN} and the reason of this insensitivity is discussed in detail. On the other hand, the total reaction cross section and the cross section of evaporated protons are found to be sensitive to σNN\sigma_{NN}. In the course of the analyses of the calculations, comparison is made with the distorted wave approach.Comment: 16 pages, 7 Postscript figure

Unified Total Synthesis, Stereostructural Elucidation, and Biological Evaluation of Sarcophytonolides

Sarcophytonolides are cembranolide diterpenes isolated from the soft corals of genus Sarcophyton. Unified total synthesis of sarcophytonolides C, E, F, G, H, and J and isosarcophytonolide D was achieved. The synthetic routes feature NaHMDS- or SmI2-mediated fragment coupling, alkoxycarbonylallylation, macrolactonization, and transannular ring-closing metathesis. These total syntheses led to the absolute configurational confirmation of sarcophytonolide H, elucidation of sarcophytonolides C, E, F, and G, and revision of sarcophytonolide J and isosarcophytonolide D. We also evaluated the antifouling activity and toxicity of the synthetic sarcophytonolides H and J and their analogues as well as the cytotoxicity of the synthetic sarcophytonolides and the key synthetic intermediates

Genome-Wide Association Study of Schizophrenia in Japanese Population

Schizophrenia is a devastating neuropsychiatric disorder with genetically complex traits. Genetic variants should explain a considerable portion of the risk for schizophrenia, and genome-wide association study (GWAS) is a potentially powerful tool for identifying the risk variants that underlie the disease. Here, we report the results of a three-stage analysis of three independent cohorts consisting of a total of 2,535 samples from Japanese and Chinese populations for searching schizophrenia susceptibility genes using a GWAS approach. Firstly, we examined 115,770 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 120 patient-parents trio samples from Japanese schizophrenia pedigrees. In stage II, we evaluated 1,632 SNPs (1,159 SNPs of p<0.01 and 473 SNPs of p<0.05 that located in previously reported linkage regions). The second sample consisted of 1,012 case-control samples of Japanese origin. The most significant p value was obtained for the SNP in the ELAVL2 [(embryonic lethal, abnormal vision, Drosophila)-like 2] gene located on 9p21.3 (p = 0.00087). In stage III, we scrutinized the ELAVL2 gene by genotyping gene-centric tagSNPs in the third sample set of 293 family samples (1,163 individuals) of Chinese descent and the SNP in the gene showed a nominal association with schizophrenia in Chinese population (p = 0.026). The current data in Asian population would be helpful for deciphering ethnic diversity of schizophrenia etiology
