    Magnetic properties of strongly disordered electronic systems

    We present a unified, global perspective on the magnetic properties of strongly disordered electronic systems, with special emphasis on the case where the ground state is metallic. We review the arguments for the instability of the disordered Fermi liquid state towards the formation of local magnetic moments, and argue that their singular low temperature thermodynamics are the ``quantum Griffiths'' precursors of the quantum phase transition to a metallic spin glass; the local moment formation is therefore not directly related to the metal-insulator transition. We also review the the mean-field theory of the disordered Fermi liquid to metallic spin glass transition and describe the separate regime of ``non-Fermi liquid'' behavior at higher temperatures near the quantum critical point.     Mechanism for the failure of the Edwards hypothesis in the SK spin glass

    The dynamics of the SK model at T=0 starting from random spin configurations is considered. The metastable states reached by such dynamics are atypical of such states as a whole, in that the probability density of site energies, p(λ)p(\lambda), is small at λ=0\lambda=0. Since virtually all metastable states have a much larger p(0)p(0), this behavior demonstrates a qualitative failure of the Edwards hypothesis. We look for its origins by modelling the changes in the site energies during the dynamics as a Markov process. We show how the small p(0)p(0) arises from features of the Markov process that have a clear physical basis in the spin-glass, and hence explain the failure of the Edwards hypothesis.Comment: 5 pages, new title, modified text, additional reference

    Bayesian Model Comparison and Analysis of the Galactic Disk Population of Gamma-Ray Millisecond Pulsars

    Pulsed emission from almost one hundred millisecond pulsars (MSPs) has been detected in γ\gamma-rays by the Fermi Large-Area Telescope. The global properties of this population remain relatively unconstrained despite many attempts to model their spatial and luminosity distributions. We perform here a self-consistent Bayesian analysis of both the spatial distribution and luminosity function simultaneously. Distance uncertainties, arising from errors in the parallax measurement or Galactic electron-density model, are marginalized over. We provide a public Python package for calculating distance uncertainties to pulsars derived using the dispersion measure by accounting for the uncertainties in Galactic electron-density model YMW16. Finally, we use multiple parameterizations for the MSP population and perform Bayesian model comparison, finding that a broken power law luminosity function with Lorimer spatial profile are preferred over multiple other parameterizations used in the past. The best-fit spatial distribution and number of γ\gamma-ray MSPs is consistent with results for the radio population of MSPs.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables + Appendix.     Domain-Wall Induced Quark Masses in Topologically-Nontrivial Background

    In the domain-wall formulation of chiral fermion, the finite separation between domain-walls (LsL_s) induces an effective quark mass (meffm_{\rm eff}) which complicates the chiral limit. In this work, we study the size of the effective mass as the function of LsL_s and the domain-wall height m0m_0 by calculating the smallest eigenvalue of the hermitian domain-wall Dirac operator in the topologically-nontrivial background fields. We find that, just like in the free case, meffm_{\rm eff} decreases exponentially in LsL_s with a rate depending on m0m_0. However, quantum fluctuations amplify the wall effects significantly. Our numerical result is consistent with a previous study of the effective mass from the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation.Comment: 10 pages, an appendix and minor changes adde
