TPA and resiniferatoxin-mediated activation of NADPH-oxidase A possible role for Rx-kinase augmentation of PKC
AbstractThe non-tumour promoting irritant, resiniferatoxin, was capable of activating the NADPH-oxidase respiratory burst of starch-elicited, but not resident mouse peritoneal macrophages in vitro. Unlike TPA, the response was synergised by incubation with zymosan. The Rx-stimulated NADPH-oxidase activity in a cell-free assay was selectively enhanced in the presence of exogenous Rx-kinase rather than PKC and in the absence of Ca2+. Since resiniferatoxin is a poor activator of PKC, it is probable that the Ca2+-independent Rx-kinase plays a role in activation of the macrophage respiratory burst following stimulation by zymosan

Standardization, calibration and innovation: a special issue on lithic microwear method
YesThis paper introduces a special issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science that considers the current state and future directions in lithic microwear analysis. There is considerable potential for lithic microwear analysis to reconstruct past human behaviour as it can provide direct insight into past activities. Consequently, it is a technique worthy of significant additional investment and continued development. To further the cause of methodological maturation within microwear analysis and to promote standardization, calibration, and innovation, the following collection of papers present various approaches and perspectives on how greater methodological refinement and increased reliability of results can and should be achieved. Many of these papers were part of a session held at the 2011 Society for American Archaeology Meeting (SAA) in Sacramento, California, while others were selected from the 2012 International Conference on Use-Wear Analysis in Faro, Portugal. The purpose of the SAA session and this special themed issue is essentially two-fold. The first is to promote awareness of the need for methodological standardization, calibration, and continuing innovation. The second is to open a serious dialogue about how these aims could be pursued and achieved.AAE was supported by the AHRC (AH/J007935/1). On the Truncated Pareto Distribution with applications
The Pareto probability distribution is widely applied in different fields
such us finance, physics, hydrology, geology and astronomy. This note deals
with an application of the Pareto distribution to astrophysics and more
precisely to the statistical analysis of mass of stars and of diameters of
asteroids. In particular a comparison between the usual Pareto distribution and
its truncated version is presented. Finally a possible physical mechanism that
produces Pareto tails for the distribution of the masses of stars is suggested.Comment: 10 pages 6 figure
Understanding Anthropological Understanding: for a merological anthropology
In this paper I argue for a merological anthropology in which ideas of ‘partiality’ and ‘practical adequacy’ provide a way out of the impasse of relativism which is implied by post-modernism and the related abandonment of a concern with ‘truth’. Ideas such as ‘aptness’ and ‘faithfulness’ enable us to re-establish empirical foundations without having to espouse a simple realism which has been rightly criticised. Ideas taken from ethnomethodology, particularly the way we bootstrap from ‘practical adequacy’ to ‘warrants for confidence’ point to a merological anthropology in which we recognize that we do not and cannot know everything, but that we can have reasons for being confident in the little we know
Multiscale Bone Remodelling with Spatial P Systems
Many biological phenomena are inherently multiscale, i.e. they are
characterized by interactions involving different spatial and temporal scales
simultaneously. Though several approaches have been proposed to provide
"multilayer" models, only Complex Automata, derived from Cellular Automata,
naturally embed spatial information and realize multiscaling with
well-established inter-scale integration schemas. Spatial P systems, a variant
of P systems in which a more geometric concept of space has been added, have
several characteristics in common with Cellular Automata. We propose such a
formalism as a basis to rephrase the Complex Automata multiscaling approach
and, in this perspective, provide a 2-scale Spatial P system describing bone
remodelling. The proposed model not only results to be highly faithful and
expressive in a multiscale scenario, but also highlights the need of a deep and
formal expressiveness study involving Complex Automata, Spatial P systems and
other promising multiscale approaches, such as our shape-based one already

Aggregate tensile strength and friability characteristics of furrow and sprinkler irrigated fields in Southern Idaho
Agricultural crops grown in southern Idaho are furrow or sprinkler irrigated. Therefore, the soil experiences several wetting and drying cycles each growing season that can contribute to changes in aggregate tensile strength and friability. The objective of the research was to evaluate the influence of irrigation on soil structural properties. Four furrow irrigated fields were sampled at the top and bottom of the field, in the furrow and on the bed location of the furrow. Five sprinkler irrigated fields were sampled at 0-5 and 5-15 cm depth and at the top and bottom of the field. Results from this study indicate that differences in tensile strength in furrow irrigated fields were only evident soon after irrigation; otherwise, there were few differences in tensile strength and friability. In sprinkler irrigated fields tensile strength increased with depth in 3 of the 5 fields measured.Friability was less affected by depth
Stationary Cylindrical Anisotropic Fluid
We present the whole set of equations with regularity and matching conditions
required for the description of physically meaningful stationary cylindrically
symmmetric distributions of matter, smoothly matched to Lewis vacuum spacetime.
A specific example is given. The electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor
are calculated, and it is shown that purely electric solutions are necessarily
static. Then, it is shown that no conformally flat stationary cylindrical fluid

Minimal muscle damage after a marathon and no influence of beetroot juice on inflammation and recovery
This study examined whether beetroot juice (BTJ) would attenuate inflammation and muscle
damage following a marathon. Using a double blind, independent group’s design, 34 runners
(~16 previous marathons completed) consumed either BTJ or an isocaloric placebo (PLA) for
3 days following a marathon. Maximal isometric voluntary contractions (MIVC),
countermovement jumps (CMJ), muscle soreness, serum cytokines, leucocytosis, creatine
kinase (CK), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and aspartate aminotransferase
(AST) were measured pre, post, and on the 2 days after the marathon. CMJ and MIVC were
reduced after the marathon (P0.05).
Muscle soreness was increased in the day after the marathon (BTJ; 45±48 vs. PLA; 46±39
mm) and had returned to baseline by day 2, irrespective of supplementation (P=0.694).
Cytokines (Interleukin-6; IL-6, interleukin-8, tumour necrosis factor-α) were increased
immediately post-marathon but apart from IL-6 had returned to baseline values by day 1 post.
No interaction effects were evident for IL-6 (P=0.213). Leucocytes increased 1.7 fold after
the race and remained elevated 2 days post, irrespective of supplement (P<0.0001). CK
peaked at 1 day post marathon (BTJ: 965±967 & PLA: 1141±979 IU·L-1) and like AST and
hs-CRP, was still elevated 2 days after the marathon (P<0.05); however, no group differences
were present for these variables. Beetroot juice did not attenuate inflammation or reduce
muscle damage following a marathon, possibly because most of these indices were not
markedly different from baseline values in the days after the marathon
