A Simple Coupled Analysis of an Arch Bridge Subjected to Tunnelling-Induced Movements

    No full text
Due to urban tunnelling activities, bridges may be subjected to excavation-induced ground movements that can affect their serviceability. The Tideway Tunnel being constructed in London involves multiple under-crossings of bridges along the River Thames. The monitoring data collected will provide an opportunity for the application and validation of numerical methods for tunnel-bridge interaction. Although field monitoring data are not yet available for publication, the response of the Grosvenor Bridge at Battersea to tunnelling-induced displacements is examined in this work with numerical models. In particular, a simple approach for the preliminary assessment of tunnelling impact on framed structures on shallow foundations is presented; the adopted two-stage finite element model uses integral forms of Mindlin’s solutions to calculate the soil stiffness matrix, while structural members including the piers, arches, deck and spandrel columns are modelled as beam elements in the superstructure stiffness matrix. Preliminary results provide useful insights into the response of arch bridges to tunnelling-induced ground movements at different levels of model complexity

Validating the language domain subtest in a developmental assessment scale for preschool children

This study reports on the validation of the language domain subtest of a developmental assessment scale for Cantonese Chinese preschool children. Three hundred and seventy eight multi-stage randomly selected children between 3;4 and 6;3 years of age were tested on the 104-item subtest. Fifty-four of these children, spreading across three age groups, demonstrated developmental problems. Results from the Rasch analyses suggested that the original and the shortened 66-item version demonstrated adequate measurement properties, including targeting and uni-dimensionality. Statistical analyses of the shortened version suggested that the subtest demonstrated strong test-retest reliability, and adequate convergent and criterion validity. This study contributes to good practice in the development of standardized normative tests, particularly those for investigations of language problems in Chinese children given that reports on existing tests' psychometric properties were often incomplete. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

Preparing social workers to be lifelong learners: Use of problem-based learning as a training component in the social work curriculum

    No full text
A constant concern for educators is how best to train the students. With the knowledge explosion and increasing complexity of the social problems, we have to look for ways to strengthen social work students' ability for continual development. Enhancing their lifelong learning competence would help them to face the future demands. To achieve this, the University of Hong Kong Department of Social Work and Social Administration ventured to use the problem-based learning (PBL) approach in some Year two practice courses of the Bachelor of Social Work program. This paper reports on the findings and shares some reflection on the experience. Copyright © 2006 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
