OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate serum leptin, adiponectin and paraoxonase1 levels in adult females receiving pharmacotherapy for various psychiatric disorders. METHODS: The study group consisted of 32 obese females (mean age 40.53 ± 11.00 years, mean body mass index 35.44 ± 5.33 kg/m²) who were receiving treatment for psychiatric disorders, and the control group included 22 obese females (mean age 35.95 ± 9.16 years, mean body mass index 30.78 ± 3.33 kg/m²) who were free of psychiatric disorders. Analyses were performed using a bioelectrical impedance device. Fasting blood samples were obtained for complete blood count and various biochemical tests, including determination of leptin, adiponectin and paraoxonase1 activity. RESULTS: Body mass index, waist and hip circumference, body fat percentage, fasting blood glucose, insulin, glycosylated hemoglobin, homeostasis model assesment of insulin resistance, alanine transaminase, aspartate tarnsaminase, and leptin levels were significantly higher in the study group than in controls. Although body weight was positively correlated with leptin levels in both groups, body weight was negatively correlated with adiponectin levels in the control group and positively correlated with adiponectin levels in the study group. In the study group, body mass index and hip circumference correlated positively with leptin levels, hip circumference correlated positively with adiponectin levels, and waist to hip ratio correlated positively with paraoxonase levels. In the control group, body mass index as well as waist and hip circumferences were positively correlated with leptin levels. Weight, body mass index, and hip circumference were also negatively correlated with the adiponectin/leptin ratio in the control group. CONCLUSION: This study indicates a higher risk for obesity-related disorders, particularly metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, in patients treated with psychiatric drugs

Aim: Despite effective HBV vaccine and vaccination programs, Hepatitis B still causes nearly one million deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization. The immunization rates are high by hepatitis B vaccination especially in young healthy population. However, advanced age, comorbidities and immune deficiency affect the rates of vaccine response negatively. We aimed to evaluate the factors affecting the vaccine response in the patients who received hepatitis B vaccine in our hospital retrospectively.Materials and Methods: Patients who received hepatitis B vaccine and followed-up for immunization status were evaluated retrospectively in our vaccination unit. The patients were examined in terms of age, comorbidities, vaccine scheme, vaccine dose, utilization of immunosuppressive-biological agents, immunization success, and common characteristics of patients who did not develop immunity. Results: Anti-HBs titers were significantly lower in patients over 50 years old. In addition, lower Anti-Hbs titers were detected in patients with comorbidity and who received immunosuppressive therapy. Statistically higher Anti-HBs titers were obtained with double dose vaccination than single dose vaccination in patients receiving immunosuppressive treatment. Moreover, it was documented that a single dose vaccination protocol was applied to all seven patients who failed vaccination. Six of these patients were over 50 years old, two were diabetic, five were diagnosed with rheumatic disease and all of them were using biological agents. Conclusion: Vaccination before treatment in patients who will receive immunosuppressive therapy, administration of high dose vaccines in patients under immunosuppressive therapy or delaying immunosuppressive therapy during vaccination may be considered as appropriate alternatives. Considering the safety and cost-effectiveness of high-dose hepatitis B vaccine, it should be preferred in the immunosuppressive patient group

The aim of this study was to evaluate germline variant frequencies of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma targeted susceptibility genes with next-generation sequencing method. Germline DNA from 75 cases were evaluated with targeted next-generation sequencing on an Illumina NextSeq550 instrument. KIF1B, RET, SDHB, SDHD, TMEM127, and VHL genes were included in the study, and Sanger sequencing was used for verifying the variants. The pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants were in the VHL, RET, SDHB, and SDHD genes, and the diagnosis rate was 24% in this study. Three different novel pathogenic variants were determined in five cases. This is the first study from Turkey, evaluating germline susceptibility genes of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma with a detection rate of 24% and three novel variants. All patients with pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma need clinical genetic testing with expanded targeted gene panels for higher diagnosis rates

Conversion in Turkish : an overview

This paper presents an overview of possible cases of conversion in Turkish. I argue that apparent cases of conversion between nouns and adjectives are cases of syntactic transposition, and apparent cases of conversion between nouns/adjectives and verbs are end products of phonological changes in the history of the language, which resulted in pairs of lexemes that are formally identical synchronically, but not historically. This does not mean that no cases of morphological conversion can be traced in the language. I will present two cases of secondary word-class conversion from derived, inflected and uninflected words to toponyms which might be taken as instances of morphological conversion or derivation by zero-affixation
