The Nuts and Bolts of Einstein-Maxwell Solutions
We find new non-supersymmetric solutions of five-dimensional ungauged
supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets. The solutions are regular,
horizonless and have the same asymptotic charges as non-extremal charged black
holes. An essential ingredient in our construction is a four-dimensional
Euclidean base which is a solution to Einstein-Maxwell equations. We construct
stationary solutions based on the Euclidean dyonic Reissner-Nordstrom black
hole as well as a six-parameter family with a dyonic Kerr-Newman-NUT base.
These solutions can be viewed as compactifications of eleven-dimensional
supergravity on a six-torus and we discuss their brane interpretation.Comment: 29 pages, 3 figure
Two real parton contributions to non-singlet kernels for exclusive QCD DGLAP evolution
Results for the two real parton differential distributions needed for
implementing a next-to-leading order (NLO) parton shower Monte Carlo are
presented. They are also integrated over the phase space in order to provide
solid numerical control of the MC codes and for the discussion of the
differences between the standard factorization and Monte Carlo
implementation at the level of inclusive NLO evolution kernels. Presented
results cover the class of non-singlet diagrams entering into NLO kernels. The
classic work of Curci-Furmanski-Pertonzio was used as a guide in the
calculations.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figure
Shotgun Lipidomics Identifies a Paired Rule for the Presence of Isomeric Ether Phospholipid Molecular Species
Ether phospholipids are abundant membrane constituents present in electrically active tissues (e.g., heart and the brain) that play important roles in cellular function. Alterations of ether phospholipid molecular species contents are associated with a number of genetic disorders and human diseases.Herein, the power of shotgun lipidomics, in combination with high mass accuracy/high resolution mass spectrometry, was explored to identify a paired rule for the presence of isomeric ether phospholipid molecular species in cellular lipidomes. The rule predicts that if an ether phospholipid A'-B is present in a lipidome, its isomeric counterpart B'-A is also present (where the ' represents an ether linkage). The biochemical basis of this rule results from the fact that the enzymes which participate in either the sequential oxidation of aliphatic alcohols to fatty acids, or the reduction of long chain fatty acids to aliphatic alcohols (metabolic precursors of ether lipid synthesis), are not entirely selective with respect to acyl chain length or degree of unsaturation. Moreover, the enzymatic selectivity for the incorporation of different aliphatic chains into the obligatory precursor of ether lipids (i.e., 1-O-alkyl-glycero-3-phosphate) is also limited. This intrinsic amplification of the number of lipid molecular species present in biological membranes predicted by this rule and demonstrated in this study greatly expands the number of ether lipid molecular species present in cellular lipidomes. Application of this rule to mass spectrometric analyses provides predictive clues to the presence of specific molecular species and greatly expands the number of identifiable and quantifiable ether lipid species present in biological samples. Through appropriate alterations in the database, use of the paired rule increases the number of identifiable metabolites in metabolic networks, thereby facilitating identification of biomarkers presaging disease states
D-Branes on the Conifold and N=1 Gauge/Gravity Dualities
We review extensions of the AdS/CFT correspondence to gauge/ gravity
dualities with N=1 supersymmetry. In particular, we describe the gauge/gravity
dualities that emerge from placing D3-branes at the apex of the conifold. We
consider first the conformal case, with discussions of chiral primary operators
and wrapped D-branes. Next, we break the conformal symmetry by adding a stack
of partially wrapped D5-branes to the system, changing the gauge group and
introducing a logarithmic renormalization group flow. In the gravity dual, the
effect of these wrapped D5-branes is to turn on the flux of 3-form field
strengths. The associated RR 2-form potential breaks the U(1) R-symmetry to
and we study this phenomenon in detail. This extra flux also leads to
deformation of the cone near the apex, which describes the chiral symmetry
breaking and confinement in the dual gauge theory.Comment: Based on I.R.K.'s lectures at the Les Houches Summer School Session

The effective action of D6-branes in N=1 type IIA orientifolds
We use a Kaluza-Klein reduction to compute the low-energy effective action
for the massless modes of a spacetime-filling D6-brane wrapped on a special
Lagrangian 3-cycle of a type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifold. The modifications to
the characteristic data of the N=1 bulk orientifold theory in the presence of a
D6-brane are analysed by studying the underlying Type IIA supergravity coupled
to the brane worldvolume in the democratic formulation and performing a
detailed dualisation procedure. The N=1 chiral coordinates are found to be in
agreement with expectations from mirror symmetry. We work out the Kahler
potential for the chiral superfields as well as the gauge kinetic functions for
the bulk and the brane gauge multiplets including the kinetic mixing between
the two. The scalar potential resulting from the dualisation procedure can be
formally interpreted in terms of a superpotential. Finally, the gauging of the
Peccei-Quinn shift symmetries of the complex structure multiplets reproduces
the D-term potential enforcing the calibration condition for special Lagrangian
3-cycles.Comment: 48 pages, v2: typos corrected, references adde
Supergravity Solutions from Floating Branes
We solve the equations of motion of five-dimensional ungauged supergravity
coupled to three U(1) gauge fields using a floating-brane Ansatz in which the
electric potentials are directly related to the gravitational warp factors. We
find a new class of non-BPS solutions, that can be obtained linearly starting
from an Euclidean four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell base. This class - the
largest known so far - reduces to the BPS and almost-BPS solutions in certain
limits. We solve the equations explicitly when the base space is given by the
Israel-Wilson metric, and obtain solutions describing non-BPS D6 and anti-D6
branes kept in equilibrium by flux. We also examine the action of spectral flow
on solutions with an Israel-Wilson base and show that it relates these
solutions to almost-BPS solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figur
Magnetic properties of holographic multiquarks in the quark-gluon plasma
We study the magnetic properties of the coloured multiquark states in the
quark-gluon plasma where the gluons are deconfined and the chiral symmetry is
still broken, using the Sakai-Sugimoto model. There are two possible magnetized
multiquark configurations. Both configurations converge to the same
configuration at the critical field and temperature before they dissociate
altogether either into less coloured multiquarks or into other phases for a
fixed density. It is also found that the multiquarks with higher colour charges
respond more to the external magnetic field in both the magnetization and the
degree of chiral symmetry breaking. Magnetic field also makes it more difficult
for multiquark states with large colour charges to satisfy the equilibrium
condition of the configuration in the gravity dual picture. As long as the
chemical potential , the magnetized multiquarks phase is
thermodynamically preferred over the magnetized vacuum. Pure pion gradient and
the chiral-symmetric quark-gluon plasma (-QGP) phase for the general
Sakai-Sugimoto model are discussed and compared with the multiquark phase in
the presence of the magnetic field. It is found that at large densities and
moderate fields, the mixed phase of multiquarks and the pion gradient is
thermodynamically preferred over the -QGP.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, revised version with significant changes and

Constraints on 6D Supergravity Theories with Abelian Gauge Symmetry
We study six-dimensional N=(1,0) supergravity theories with abelian, as well
as non-abelian, gauge group factors. We show that for theories with fewer than
nine tensor multiplets, the number of possible combinations of gauge groups -
including abelian factors - and non-abelian matter representations is finite.
We also identify infinite families of theories with distinct U(1) charges that
cannot be ruled out using known quantum consistency conditions, though only a
finite subset of these can arise from known string constructions.Comment: 49 pages, latex; v2: minor corrections, references added; v3: minor

Colouration in amphibians as a reflection of nutritional status : the case of tree frogs in Costa Rica
Colouration has been considered a cue for mating success in many species; ornaments in males often are related to carotenoid mobilization towards feathers and/or skin and can signal general health and nutrition status. However, there are several factors that can also link with status, such as physiological blood parameters and body condition, but there is not substantial evidence which supports the existence of these relationships and interactions in anurans. This study evaluated how body score and blood values interact with colouration in free-range Agalychnis callidryas and Agalychnis annae males. We found significant associations between body condition and plasmatic proteins and haematocrit, as well as between body condition and colour values from the chromaticity diagram. We also demonstrated that there is a significant relation between the glucose and plasmatic protein values that were reflected in the ventral colours of the animals, and haematocrit inversely affected most of those colour values. Significant differences were found between species as well as between populations of A. callidryas, suggesting that despite colour variation, there are also biochemical differences within animals from the same species located in different regions. These data provide information on underlying factors for colouration of male tree frogs in nature, provide insights about the dynamics of several nutrients in the amphibian model and how this could affect the reproductive output of the animals
