SRPT Scheduling for Web Servers
This note briey summarizes some results from two papers: [4] and [23]. These papers pose the following question: Is it possible to reduce the expected response time of every request at a web server, simply by changing the order in which we schedule the requests? In [4] we approach this question analytically via an M/G/1 queue. In [23] we approach the same question via implementation involving an Apache web server running on Linux
New Approaches to HSCT Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization
The successful development of a capable and economically viable high speed civil transport (HSCT) is perhaps one of the most challenging tasks in aeronautics for the next two decades. At its heart it is fundamentally the design of a complex engineered system that has significant societal, environmental and political impacts. As such it presents a formidable challenge to all areas of aeronautics, and it is therefore a particularly appropriate subject for research in multidisciplinary design and optimization (MDO). In fact, it is starkly clear that without the availability of powerful and versatile multidisciplinary design, analysis and optimization methods, the design, construction and operation of im HSCT simply cannot be achieved. The present research project is focused on the development and evaluation of MDO methods that, while broader and more general in scope, are particularly appropriate to the HSCT design problem. The research aims to not only develop the basic methods but also to apply them to relevant examples from the NASA HSCT R&D effort. The research involves a three year effort aimed first at the HSCT MDO problem description, next the development of the problem, and finally a solution to a significant portion of the problem
New Approaches to Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization
Research under the subject grant is being carried out in a jointly coordinated effort within three laboratories in the School of Aerospace Engineering and the George Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. The objectives and results for Year 2 of the research program are summarized. The "Objectives" and "Expected Significance" are taken directly from the Year 2 Proposal presented in October 1994, and "Results" summarize the what has been accomplished this year. A discussion of these results is provided in the following sections. A listing of papers, presentations and reports that acknowledge grant support, either in part or in whole, and that were prepared during this period is provided in an attachment
HC4 The Potential Impact Of Recommendations Made Through The Common Drug Review Program At The Canadian Agency For Drugs And Technologies In Health
A full-length cDNA clone specifying the nuclear-encoded subunit VIb of human cytochrome c oxidase (COX) was isolated from a human skeletal muscle cDNA expression library. This was done with antiserum directed against the group of subunits VIa, b and c of bovine heart COX. A potential ribosome-binding site was located immediately upstream from the initiation codon. The predicted amino acid sequence revealed 85% similarity with the corresponding subunit of bovine heart COX. Subunit VIb lacks a cleavable presequence for mitochondrial addressing. We assume that there are no tissue-specific isoforms of subunit VIb, since (i) in a Northern blot experiment a single hybridizing band of approx. 500 nucleotides was demonstrated in RNA from liver, skeletal muscle, MOLT-4 cells and fibroblasts and (ii) a full-length cDNA clone with an identical sequence was isolated from a human liver cDNA library. Steady-state levels of the coxVIb transcript were different in the tissues examined
Identification of the mitochondrial MSRB2 as a binding partner of LG72
Genetic studies have linked the evolutionary novel, anthropoid primate-specific gene locus G72/G30 in the etiology of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. However, the function of the protein encoded by this locus, LG72, is currently controversially discussed. Some studies have suggested that LG72 binds to and regulates the activity of the peroxisomal enzyme D-amino-acid-oxidase, while others proposed an alternative role of this protein due to its mitochondrial location in vitro. Studies with transgenic mice expressing LG72 further suggested that high levels of LG72 lead to an impairment of mitochondrial functions with a concomitant increase in reactive oxygen species production. In the present study, we now performed extensive interaction analyses and identified the mitochondrial methionine-R-sulfoxide reductase B2 (MSRB2) as a specific interaction partner of LG72. MSRB2 belongs to the MSR protein family and functions in mitochondrial oxidative stress defense. Based on our results, we propose that LG72 is involved in the regulation of mitochondrial oxidative stress
