Anisotropic Diffusion Limited Aggregation
Using stochastic conformal mappings we study the effects of anisotropic
perturbations on diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) in two dimensions. The
harmonic measure of the growth probability for DLA can be conformally mapped
onto a constant measure on a unit circle. Here we map preferred directions
for growth of angular width to a distribution on the unit circle which
is a periodic function with peaks in such that the width
of each peak scales as , where defines the
``strength'' of anisotropy along any of the chosen directions. The two
parameters map out a parameter space of perturbations that allows a
continuous transition from DLA (for or ) to needle-like fingers
as . We show that at fixed the effective fractal dimension of
the clusters obtained from mass-radius scaling decreases with
increasing from to a value bounded from below by
. Scaling arguments suggest a specific form for the dependence
of the fractal dimension on for large , form which compares

The Loudest Event Statistic: General Formulation, Properties and Applications
The use of the loudest observed event to generate statistical statements
about rate and strength has become standard in searches for gravitational waves
from compact binaries and pulsars. The Bayesian formulation of the method is
generalized in this paper to allow for uncertainties both in the background
estimate and in the properties of the population being constrained. The method
is also extended to allow rate interval construction. Finally, it is shown how
to combine the results from multiple experiments and a comparison is drawn
between the upper limit obtained in a single search and the upper limit
obtained by combining the results of two experiments each of half the original
duration. To illustrate this, we look at an example case, motivated by the

Accommodating Youth with Disabilities in 4-H Horse Programs
Including and accepting youth with disabilities in horse programs is an important part of our positive youth development mission. There are some inherent dangers and concerns in working with horses that create some unique challenges for volunteers and Extension staff providing an inclusive and inviting program. This article discusses how inclusion of youth with disabilities in educational programs benefits youth with and without disabilities, and strategies we have found successful in our efforts to increase the accessibility of our 4-H horse program to youth with disabilities
Cosmic Censorship: As Strong As Ever
Spacetimes which have been considered counter-examples to strong cosmic
censorship are revisited. We demonstrate the classical instability of the
Cauchy horizon inside charged black holes embedded in de Sitter spacetime for
all values of the physical parameters. The relevant modes which maintain the
instability, in the regime which was previously considered stable, originate as
outgoing modes near to the black hole event horizon. This same mechanism is
also relevant for the instability of Cauchy horizons in other proposed

Are HIV smartphone apps and online interventions fit for purpose?
Sexual health is an under-explored area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), particularly sexually transmitted infections such as HIV. Due to the stigma associated with these infections, people are often motivated to seek information online. With the rise of smartphone and web apps, there is enormous potential for technology to provide easily accessible information and resources. However, using online information raises important concerns about the trustworthiness of these resources and whether they are fit for purpose. We conducted a review of smartphone and web apps to investigate the landscape of currently available online apps and whether they meet the diverse needs of people seeking information on HIV online. Our functionality review revealed that existing technology interventions have a one-size-fits-all approach and do not support the breadth and complexity of HIV-related support needs. We argue that technology-based interventions need to signpost their offering and provide tailored support for different stages of HIV, including prevention, testing, diagnosis and management
A nonlinear detection algorithm for periodic signals in gravitational wave detectors
We present an algorithm for the detection of periodic sources of
gravitational waves with interferometric detectors that is based on a special
symmetry of the problem: the contributions to the phase modulation of the
signal from the earth rotation are exactly equal and opposite at any two
instants of time separated by half a sidereal day; the corresponding is true
for the contributions from the earth orbital motion for half a sidereal year,
assuming a circular orbit. The addition of phases through multiplications of
the shifted time series gives a demodulated signal; specific attention is given
to the reduction of noise mixing resulting from these multiplications. We
discuss the statistics of this algorithm for all-sky searches (which include a
parameterization of the source spin-down), in particular its optimal
sensitivity as a function of required computational power. Two specific
examples of all-sky searches (broad-band and narrow-band) are explored
numerically, and their performances are compared with the stack-slide technique

Metric Perturbation Approach to Gravitational Waves in Isotropic Cosmologies
Gravitational waves in isotropic cosmologies were recently studied using the
gauge-invariant approach of Ellis-Bruni. We now construct the linearised metric
perturbations of the background Robertson-Walker space-time which reproduce the
results obtained in that study. The analysis carried out here also facilitates
