Mathematical skills of 11-year-old children born very preterm and full-term

Preterm birth affects the academic development of children, especially in mathematics. Remarkably, only a few studies have measured specific effects of preterm birth on mathematical skills in primary school. The aim of this study was to compare 11-year-old children, with an IQ above 70, born very preterm (N = 64) and full-term (N = 72) on a variety of 5th grade mathematical skills and cognitive abilities important for mathematical learning. The measures were spontaneous focusing on numerosity (SFON), spontaneous focusing on quantitative relations (SFOR), arithmetic fluency, mathematics achievement, number line estimation, rational number magnitude knowledge, mathematics motivation, reading skills, visuospatial processing, executive functions, and naming speed. The children born very preterm and full-term differed in arithmetic fluency, SFON and SFOR. Domain general cognitive abilities did not fully explain the group differences in SFON and SFOR. Retrospective comparisons of the samples at the age of five years showed large group differences in early mathematical skills and cognitive abilities. Despite lower early mathematical skills, the children born very preterm reached peer equivalent performance in many mathematical skills by the age of 11 years. Nevertheless, they appear less likely to focus on implicit mathematical features in their everyday life.</p

Photoelectrochemical properties of mesoporous NiOx deposited on technical FTO via nanopowder sintering in conventional and plasma atmospheres

Nanoporous nickel oxide (NiO x ) has been deposited with two different procedures of sintering (CS and RDS). Both samples display solid state oxidation at about 3.1 V vs Li+/Li. Upon sensitization of CS/RDS NiO x with erythrosine b (ERY), nickel oxide oxidation occurs at the same potential. Impedance spectroscopy revealed a higher charge transfer resistance for ERY-sensitized RDS NiO x with respect to sensitized CS NiO x . This was due to the chemisorption of a larger amount of ERY on RDS with respect to CS NiO x . Upon illumination the photoinduced charge transfer between ERY layer and NiO x could be observed only with oxidized CS. Photoelectrochemical effects of sensitized RDS NiO x were evidenced upon oxide reduction. With the addition of iodine RDS NiOx electrodes could give the reduction iodine → iodide in addition to the reduction of RDS NiO x . p-type dye sensitized solar cells were assembled with RDS NiO x photocathodes sensitized either by ERY or Fast Green. Resulting overall efficiencies ranged between 0.02 and 0.04 % upon irradiation with solar spectrum simulator (Iin : 0.1 W cm −2 )

Descriptive epidemiology of gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in a population-based registry

The incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), particularly at certain extranodal sites, has been demonstrated to be rising, at least in the USA, more than for any other malignancy. One of the major sites of extranodal NHL is the gastrointestinal tract, though little is known of its epidemiological characteristics. Over an 8-year period (1986 to 1993) 1069 primary gastrointestinal NHL cases were reported to the Leukaemia Research Fund Data Collection Survey which covers many parts of England and Wales. Age-standardized incidence rates of gastrointestinal NHL at all sites (0.58/105 per year), gastric (0.24/105 per year), small bowel (0.17/105 per year) and large bowel (0.06/105 per year) confirmed that the UK has the lowest rates of gastrointestinal NHL in Europe. An excess of males was observed at all ages and for all sites. Time-trend analyses showed annual increases in incidence rates for gastric (6.3%) and small bowel (5.9%) NHL although a concomitant decrease in gastrointestinal NHL of unknown site suggested that at least part of these increases had resulted from more accurate diagnoses. Overall, the incidence of gastrointestinal NHL significantly increased by 2.7% per annum and was limited to the population aged over 50 years in this series. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
