Discovery of a new accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar in the globular cluster NGC 2808
We report on the discovery of coherent pulsations at a period of 2.9 ms from
the X-ray transient MAXI J0911-655 in the globular cluster NGC 2808. We
observed X-ray pulsations at a frequency of Hz in three different
observations of the source performed with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR during the
source outburst. This newly discovered accreting millisecond pulsar is part of
an ultra-compact binary system characterised by an orbital period of
minutes and a projected semi-major axis of lt-ms. Based on the mass
function we estimate a minimum companion mass of 0.024 M, which
assumes a neutron star mass of 1.4 M and a maximum inclination angle
of (derived from the lack of eclipses and dips in the light-curve
of the source). We find that the companion star's Roche-Lobe could either be
filled by a hot ( K) pure helium white dwarf with a 0.028
M mass (implying ) or an old (>5 Gyr) brown dwarf
with metallicity abundances between solar/sub-solar and mass ranging in the
interval 0.0650.085 M (16 < < 21). During the outburst the
broad-band energy spectra are well described by a superposition of a weak
black-body component (kT 0.5 keV) and a hard cutoff power-law with photon
index 1.7 and cut-off at a temperature kT 130 keV. Up to
the latest Swift-XRT observation performed on 2016 July 19 the source has been
observed in outburst for almost 150 days, which makes MAXI J0911-655 the second
accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar with outburst duration longer than 100 days.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&
"Hiccup" accretion in the swinging pulsar IGR J18245-2452
IGR J18245-2452 is the fifteenth discovered accreting millisecond X-ray
pulsar and the first source of this class showing direct evidence for
transition between accretion and rotational powered emission states. These
swing provided the strongest confirmation of the pulsar recycling scenario
available so far. During the two XMM-Newton observations that were carried out
while the source was in outburst in April 2013, IGR J18245-2452 displayed a
unique and peculiar variability of its X-ray emission. In this work, we report
on a detailed analysis of the XMM- Newton data and focus in particular on the
timing and spectral variability of the source. IGR J18245-2452 continuously
switches between lower and higher intensity states, with typical variations in
flux up to a factor of about 500 in time scales as short as few seconds. These
variations in the source intensity are sometimes associated to a dramatic
spectral hardening, during which the power-law photon index of the source
changes from Gamma=1.7 to Gamma=0.9. The pulse profiles extracted at different
count rates and energies show a complex variability. These phenomena are not
usually observed in accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, at least not on such a
short time scale. Fast variability was also found in the ATCA radio
observations carried out for about 6 hours during the outburst at a frequency
of 5.5 and 9 GHz. We interpret the variability observed from IGR J18245-2452 in
terms of a "hiccup" accretion phase, during which the accretion of material
from the inner boundary of the Keplerian disk is reduced by the onset of
centrifugal inhibition of accretion, possibly causing the launch of strong
outflows. Changes across accretion and propeller regimes have been long
predicted and reproduced by MHD simulations of accreting millisecond X-ray
pulsars but never observed to produce an extreme variability as that shown by

The Lightest Pseudo-Goldstone Boson at Future e+e- Colliders
In a class of models of dynamical symmetry breaking not ruled out by the
available data, the lightest neutral pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson P0 contains
only down-type techniquarks and charged technileptons. Its mass scale is
naturally determined by the b-quark and therefore it is likely to be light. As
the presence of pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons in models of dynamical symmetry
breaking is a quite general feature, the search of the P0 at colliders is an
interesting opportunity of putting limits on or discovering a dynamical
electroweak symmetry breaking scenario. In this note we discuss the prospects

An XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL view on the hard state of EXO 1745-248 during its 2015 outburst
CONTEXT - Transient low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) often show outbursts
lasting typically a few-weeks and characterized by a high X-ray luminosity
( erg/sec), while for most of the time they are
found in X-ray quiescence ( erg/sec). EXO 1745-248
is one of them. AIMS - The broad-band coverage, and the sensitivity of
instrument on board of {\xmm} and {\igr}, offers the opportunity to
characterize the hard X-ray spectrum during {\exo} outburst. METHODS - In this
paper we report on quasi-simultaneous {\xmm} and {\igr} observations of the
X-ray transient {\exo} located in the globular cluster Terzan 5, performed ten
days after the beginning of the outburst (on 2015 March 16th) shown by the
source between March and June 2015. The source was caught in a hard state,
emitting a 0.8-100 keV luminosity of ~{\lumcgs}. RESULTS - The
spectral continuum was dominated by thermal Comptonization of seed photons with
temperature keV, by a cloud with moderate optical depth
and electron temperature keV. A weaker soft
thermal component at temperature --0.7 keV and compatible
with a fraction of the neutron star radius was also detected. A rich emission
line spectrum was observed by the EPIC-pn on-board {\xmm}; features at energies
compatible with K- transitions of ionized sulfur, argon, calcium and
iron were detected, with a broadness compatible with either thermal Compton
broadening or Doppler broadening in the inner parts of an accretion disk
truncated at gravitational radii from the neutron star. Strikingly, at
least one narrow emission line ascribed to neutral or mildly ionized iron is
needed to model the prominent emission complex detected between 5.5 and 7.5

Effects of Feeding Bt Maize to Sows during Gestation and Lactation on Maternal and Offspring Immunity and Fate of Transgenic Material

We aimed to determine the effect of feeding transgenic maize to sows during gestation and lactation on maternal and offspring immunity and to assess the fate of transgenic material.
Methodology/Principal Findings:
On the day of insemination, sows were assigned to one of two treatments (n = 12/treatment); 1) non-Bt control maize diet or 2) Bt-MON810 maize diet, which were fed for ~143 days throughout gestation and lactation. Immune function was assessed by leukocyte phenotyping, haematology and Cry1Ab-specific antibody presence in blood on days 0, 28 and 110 of gestation and at the end of lactation. Peripheral-blood mononuclear cell cytokine production was investigated on days 28 and 110 of gestation. Haematological analysis was performed on offspring at birth (n = 12/treatment). Presence of the cry1Ab transgene was assessed in sows' blood and faeces on day 110 of gestation and in blood and tissues of offspring at birth. Cry1Ab protein presence was assessed in sows' blood during gestation and lactation and in tissues of offspring at birth. Blood monocyte count and percentage were higher (P<0.05), while granulocyte percentage was lower (P<0.05) in Bt maize-fed sows on day 110 of gestation. Leukocyte count and granulocyte count and percentage were lower (P<0.05), while lymphocyte percentage was higher (P<0.05) in offspring of Bt maize-fed sows. Bt maize-fed sows had a lower percentage of monocytes on day 28 of lactation and of CD4+CD8+ lymphocytes on day 110 of gestation, day 28 of lactation and overall (P<0.05). Cytokine production was similar between treatments. Transgenic material or Cry1Ab-specific antibodies were not detected in sows or offspring.
Conclusions/Significance:
Treatment differences observed following feeding of Bt maize to sows did not indicate inflammation or allergy and are unlikely to be of major importance. Effect of Peat-Reduced and Peat-Free Substrates on Rosemary Growth
The objective of this work was to study the use of four composts, obtained by agro-industrial, urban and green wastes, as growing media components on Rosmarinus officinalis L. Substrates were obtained by mixing each compost with peat in different proportions. Main physical and chemical characteristics of prepared substrates have been compared and, at the end of growing cycle, the biometric survey on main growing parameters and plant nutritional status was performed. The obtained results showed that substrates with 30% compost have main physical and chemical parameters comparable with those of the control. Best quality plants have been obtained substituting peat with 30% of compost, except with the olive mill compost. At the end, the green pruning compost can be recommended as growing media component (up to 50%) for the growth of Rosmarinus officinalis L., being able to determine high quality plants, together with an implemented plant nutrient efficiency
Spectral line shape of resonant four-wave mixing induced by broad-bandwidth lasers
We present a theoretical and experimental study of the line shape of resonant four-wave mixing induced by broad-bandwidth laser radiation that revises the theory of Meacher, Smith, Ewart, and Cooper (MSEC) [Phys. Rev. A 46, 2718 (1992)]. We adopt the same method as MSEC but correct for an invalid integral used to average over the distribution of atomic velocities. The revised theory predicts a Voigt line shape composed of a homogeneous, Lorentzian component, defined by the collisional rate Γ, and an inhomogeneous, Doppler component, which is a squared Gaussian. The width of the inhomogeneous component is reduced by a factor of √2 compared to the simple Doppler width predicted by MSEC. In the limit of dominant Doppler broadening, the width of the homogeneous component is predicted to be 4Γ, whereas in the limit of dominant homogeneous broadening, the predicted width is 2Γ. An experimental measurement is reported of the line shape of the four-wave-mixing signal using a broad-bandwidth, "modeless", laser resonant with the Q1 (6) line of the A2 Σ - X2 Π(0,0) system of the hydroxyl radical. The measured widths of the Voigt components were found to be consistent with the predictions of the revised theory
A new low magnetic field magnetar: the 2011 outburst of Swift J1822.3-1606
We report on the long term X-ray monitoring with Swift, RXTE, Suzaku, Chandra
and XMM-Newton of the outburst of the newly discovered magnetar Swift
J1822.3-1606 (SGR 1822-1606), from the first observations soon after the
detection of the short X-ray bursts which led to its discovery, through the
first stages of its outburst decay (covering the time-span from July 2011,
until end of April 2012). We also report on archival ROSAT observations which
witnessed the source during its likely quiescent state, and on upper limits on
Swift J1822.3-1606's radio-pulsed and optical emission during outburst, with
the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC),
respectively. Our X-ray timing analysis finds the source rotating with a period
of P=8.43772016(2) s and a period derivative \dot{P}=8.3(2)x10^{-14} s s^{-1} ,
which entails an inferred dipolar surface magnetic field of B~2.7x10^{13} G at
the equator. This measurement makes Swift J1822.3-1606 the second lowest
magnetic field magnetar (after SGR 0418+5729; Rea et al. 2010). Following the
flux and spectral evolution from the beginning of the outburst, we find that
the flux decreased by about an order of magnitude, with a subtle softening of
the spectrum, both typical of the outburst decay of magnetars. By modeling the
secular thermal evolution of Swift J1822.3-1606, we find that the observed
timing properties of the source, as well as its quiescent X-ray luminosity, can
be reproduced if it was born with a poloidal and crustal toroidal fields of
B_{p}~1.5x10^{14} G and B_{tor}~7x10^{14} G, respectively, and if its current
