Stochastic energetics of a Brownian motor and refrigerator driven by non-uniform temperature
The energetics of a Brownian heat engine and heat pump driven by position
dependent temperature, known as the B\"uttiker-Landauer heat engine and heat
pump, is investigated by numerical simulations of the inertial Langevin
equation. We identify parameter values for optimal performance of the heat
engine and heat pump. Our results qualitatively differ from approaches based on
the overdamped model. The behavior of the heat engine and heat pump, in the
linear response regime is examined under finite time conditions and we find
that the efficiency is lower than that of an endoreversible engine working
under the same condition. Finally, we investigate the role of different
potential and temperature profiles to enhance the efficiency of the system. Our
simulations show that optimizing the potential and temperature profile leads
only to a marginal enhancement of the system performance due to the large
entropy production via the Brownian particle's kinetic energy.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures (latest version with modified figures and text
Critical Behaviour of Non-Equilibrium Phase Transitions to Magnetically Ordered States
We describe non-equilibrium phase transitions in arrays of dynamical systems
with cubic nonlinearity driven by multiplicative Gaussian white noise.
Depending on the sign of the spatial coupling we observe transitions to
ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ordered states. We discuss the phase
diagram, the order of the transitions, and the critical behaviour. For global
coupling we show analytically that the critical exponent of the magnetization
exhibits a transition from the value 1/2 to a non-universal behaviour depending
on the ratio of noise strength to the magnitude of the spatial coupling.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Like or dislike? Adolescents’ responses to personalized social network site advertising
Increasingly, personal data posted by users of social network sites (SNSs) can be used to personalize advertising. The present study investigates how adolescents respond to personalized ads in terms of attitude toward the ad, brand engagement and intention to forward, and whether privacy concerns moderate their responses. According to pretest results, a medium level of personalization was expected to be optimal in terms of advertising effectiveness. A within-subjects experiment involving 40 participants aged 14–18 years was performed. Three conditions of personalized advertising were designed with, respectively, low, medium, and high levels of personalization. The study found that the highest personalization condition generated the most positive response and that privacy concerns did not moderate the effects of personalization. The privacy paradox is discussed as an alternative explanation, along with other implications of the results
First order phase transition in a nonequilibrium growth process
We introduce a simple continuous model for nonequilibrium surface growth. The
dynamics of the system is defined by the KPZ equation with a Morse-like
potential representing a short range interaction between the surface and the
substrate. The mean field solution displays a non trivial phase diagram with a
first order transition between a growing and a bound surface, associated with a
region of coexisting phases, and a tricritical point where the transition
becomes second order. Numerical simulations in 3 dimensions show quantitative
agreement with mean field results, and the features of the phase space are
preserved even in 2 dimensions.Comment: 7 figures, revtex, submitted to Phys. Rev.
On the center of mass of Ising vectors
We show that the center of mass of Ising vectors that obey some simple
constraints, is again an Ising vector.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX; Claims in connection with disordered

Parametric phase transition in one dimension
We calculate analytically the phase boundary for a nonequilibrium phase
transition in a one-dimensional array of coupled, overdamped parametric
harmonic oscillators in the limit of strong and weak spatial coupling. Our
results show that the transition is reentrant with respect to the spatial
coupling in agreement with the prediction of the mean field theory.Comment: to appear in Europhysics letter
Intrinsic noise-induced phase transitions: beyond the noise interpretation
We discuss intrinsic noise effects in stochastic multiplicative-noise partial
differential equations, which are qualitatively independent of the noise
interpretation (Ito vs. Stratonovich), in particular in the context of
noise-induced ordering phase transitions. We study a model which, contrary to
all cases known so far, exhibits such ordering transitions when the noise is
interpreted not only according to Stratonovich, but also to Ito. The main
feature of this model is the absence of a linear instability at the transition
point. The dynamical properties of the resulting noise-induced growth processes
are studied and compared in the two interpretations and with a reference
Ginzburg-Landau type model. A detailed discussion of new numerical algorithms
used in both interpretations is also presented.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
