A Titan exploration study: Science, technology and mission planning options, volume 1
Mission concepts and technology advancements that can be used in the exploration of the outer planet satellites were examined. Titan, the seventh satellite of Saturn was selected as the target of interest. Science objectives for Titan exploration were identified, and recommended science payloads for four basic mission modes were developed (orbiter, atmospheric probe, surface penetrator and lander). Trial spacecraft and mission designs were produced for the various mission modes. Using these trial designs as a base, technology excursions were then made to find solutions to the problems resulting from these conventional approaches and to uncover new science, technology and mission planning options. Several mission modes were developed that take advantage of the unique conditions expected at Titan. They include a combined orbiter, atmosphere probe and lander vehicle, a combined probe and surface penetrator configuration and concepts for advanced remote sensing orbiters
The paper analyzes advantages and disadvantages of composite reinforcement while reinforcing concrete structures. Results of experimental investigations on adhesion strength of fiberglass reinforcement manufactured in the Republic of Belarus with concrete have been given in the paper. The paper contains an analysis pertaining to the influence of concrete contact diameter and length of fiberglass reinforcing bars on strength and deformability of adhesion with concrete. Failure behavior of prototypes and maximum loading that does cause breakage in adhesion of fiberglass reinforcement with the concrete have been controlled in order to study the influence of diameter and length of fiberglass reinforcing bar contact with the concrete on strength and deformability of concrete adhesion for composite reinforcement produced by various manufacturers. Displacement of non-loaded (free) and loaded ends of the reinforcing bars with regard to concrete exposed face on both specimen ends has been also controlled. The experiments have shown that destruction of the prototypes occurred due to initiation of one of the following three reasons: reinforcement sliding in reference to concrete, cleaving of a protective concrete layer or breakage of composite reinforcement. Start-up moments for reinforcing bar slip in relation to the concrete have been determined with the help of two methods. The paper provides proposals for calculation assessment of anchorage in the concrete for fiberglass reinforcement manufactured by the following enterprises and companies “Stroykompozit” (Gomel, Republic of Belarus), Research and Production Company (RPC) “Biznes-Kontinent” (Brest, Republic of Belarus) and Private Eenterprise (PE) “Minplast” (Minsk, Republic of Belarus).
Decolorization and detoxification of synthetic dyes by mexican strains of trametes sp
Laccases have attracted a great deal of interest because of their remarkable ability for the degradation of synthetic dyes present in wastewaters. New laccase producing sources with robust operational and functional properties are being continuously explored. In this work, the potential for the decolorization and detoxification of synthetic dyes was evaluated in two Mexican strains of the genus Trametes. The decolorization capacity of Trametes maxima LE130 and Trametes sp. LA1 was tested in solid and liquid media. The phytotoxicity of the degradation products was determined using Raphanus sativus and Pisum sativum seeds. In solid media, both strains showed a higher decolorization capacity (p ≤ 0.05) than Phanerochaete chrysosporium ATCC 24725, which is known to be very efficient in lignin and dye-degradation. They produced laccase as the main ligninolytic enzyme; T. maxima LE130 secreted a single isoform of 43.9 kDa, while Trametes sp. LA1 produced three isoforms of 67.3, 58.6 and 52.7 kDa, respectively. Trametes sp. LA1 culture fluids were capable of decolorizing and detoxifying chemically diverse dyes (anthraquinonic dye Remazol Brilliant Blue R, azoic Reactive Black 5 and triphenylmethane Crystal Violet) without the addition of redox mediators. Therefore, this could be considered as a new laccase source which could be potentially competitive in the bioremediation of dye-containing wastewaters.Fil: Levin, Laura Noemí. New Technologies’ Promise to the Self and the Becoming of the Sacred: Insights from Georges Bataille’s Concept of Transgression
This article draws on Georges Bataille’s concept of transgression, a key element in Bataille’s theory of the sacred, to highlight structural implications of the way the self-empowerment ethos of new technologies suffuses the digital tracking culture. Pointing to the original conceptual stance of transgression, worked out against prohibition, I first argue that, beyond a critique of new technologies’ promise of self-empowerment as coming at the expense of an acknowledgement of the ultimate taboo—death—is the problem of the sanitizing of the tension between the crossing of the line of the symbolic taboo and prohibition; this undermines a “libidinal investment” towards the sacred, which is central in Bataille’s theory. Second, focussing on “eroticism”, since this embodies the emancipative potential of the Bataillean sacred, I argue that while a fear of eroticism marks out the digital technological realm, this is covered up by the blurring of boundaries between pleasure, fun and sex(iness) that currently governs our experience with technological devices
Recovering critique in an age of datafication
This article starts out from the need for critical work on processes of datafication and their consequences for the constitution of social knowledge and the social world. Current social science work on datafication has been greatly shaped by the theoretical approach of Bruno Latour, as reflected in the work of Actor Network Theory and Science and Technology Studies (ANT/STS). The article asks whether this approach, given its philosophical underpinnings, provides sufficient resources for the critical work that is required in relation to datafication. Drawing on Latour’s own reflections about the flatness of the social, it concludes that it does not, since key questions, in particular about the nature of social order cannot be asked or answered within ANT. In the article’s final section, three approaches from earlier social theory are considered as possible supplements to ANT/STS for a social science serious about addressing the challenges that datafication poses for society
