Effect of Interest Rates on Foreign Exchange Rates in Kenya: A Test of the Forward Premium Puzzle

    Get PDF
The main objective of this study was to examine the presence of the forward premium puzzle in the foreign exchange market in Kenya. The study used the Kshs/USD exchange rate for the period 1994 to 2016. That data consisted of monthly observations of the exchange rate, monthly observations of the 91-day Kenya government Treasury Bills Rate and the 91-day US government Treasury Bills rate. As a matter of procedure the data were tested for nonstationarity using the ADF test in level forms and in first differences. The result revealed that foreign exchange rates, interest rates and the risk premium are nonstationary. Furthermore, these variables were found to be cointegrated. Therefore, this study applied the VECM instead of the classical Granger causality tests to the data. The results show that the coefficient of the forward premium is not only negative but also statistically significant at the 5 percent level. This indicates the presence of the forward premium puzzle in the foreign exchange rate market in Kenya. Moreover, the forward premium contains information that can be used to improve the prediction the foreign exchange rate

Effects of enforcement of the traffic act on injury severity among patients admitted at the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital, Nakuru

Background: The Traffic Act was enforced in Kenya from 1st February 2004. Systematic evaluations of the effects of this enforcement on injury severity are unavailable. Objective: To compare injury severity among victims of public service vehicle (pSV) crashes in the periods one year before and one year after the enforcement of the Traffic Act.Design: A retrospective pre and post-intervention survey.Setting: Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital, Nakuru. Results: There were no changes in injury severity levels among the sampled patients before and after the enforcement of the Traffic Act (Most Absolute difference = 0.087, Kolmogorov-Smimov Z = 0.722, ñ > 0.05). The patients stayed in hospital for a median of three days in both policy periods. The mean age of the patients was 31.49 years (SD= 14.58) while three quarters of the patients were males. The age and sex profiles of the admitted patients did not change with the enforcement of the Traffic Act.Conclusion: The enforcement of the Traffic Act did not have any effect on injury severity among admitted PSV crash victims. Measures to lessen the burden of road traffic injury deserve greater attention

Adoption of Technological Innovations on Organizational Performance: Case of Commercial Banks in Kenya

Internet banking (IB) allows functional banking activities online. Adoption of IB varies significantly across commercial banks. Banks with large size tend to adopt IB earlier. In 2006, 96 percent of banks with assets over Kshs 24 billion had a website, compared to only 51 percent with assets under Kshs 8 billion. These observations raise important questions: what explains these variations of diffusion rates across banking groups?  This study reports the results of a descriptive survey on factors causing variations in adoption of IB.  A structured questionnaire was administered to all financial managers in all 46 commercial banks with a response rate of 70%. The SPSS was used to run simultaneous-equation regressions on data collected. Factors driving adoption of IB include increase average bank assets, non adopters imitating early adopters and loan specialisation in consumer lending. Factors hindering IB adoption include competition among banks and average age of a bank.  The study recommends that to enhance IB adoption, banks should; strive to increase their average assets size, non adaptors to carefully study early adaptors, specialize in consumer lending, feed off competition by forming strategic alliances finally new banks have the advantage of installing IB technology in a package with other computer facilities compared to old banks. The study is important because banks have been blamed for not initiating programmes that adequately satisfying demand for financial services. The research contributes to the debate on how to enhance access to financial services in Kenya. Key word: Adoption of Technological Innovation, Organizational performanc

Census and ear-notching of black rhinos (Diceros bicornis michaeli) in Tsavo East National Park, Kenya

This paper updates the status of the black rhino population in Tsavo East National Park (NP). Data were acquired through aerial counts of the black rhino between 3 and 9 October 2010 using three fixed-wing husky aircrafts and a Bell 206L helicopter in an area of about 3,300 km2. Based on previous sightings of rhinos, the area was divided into 14 blocks, with each block subdivided into 400 m transects. An aircraft flying at about 500 m above the ground was assigned to carry out the aerial survey following these transects within each block. Observers scanned for rhinos about 200 m on either sides of the flight paths. Intensive searches in areas with dense vegetation, especially along the Galana and Voi Rivers and other known rhino range areas was also carried out by both the huskies and the helicopter. The count resulted in sighting of 11 black rhinos. Seven of these individuals were ear notched and fitted with radio transmitters and the horns were tipped off to discourage poaching. Three of the seven captured rhinos were among the 49 animals translocated to Tsavo East between 1993 and 1999. The other four animals were born in Tsavo East. Two female rhinos and their calves were not ear-notched or fitted with transmitters. It is recommended that another count be carried out immediately after the wet season as the rhinos spend more time in the open areas while the vegetation is still green. The repeat aerail count is to include blocks north of River Galana

Objective: To investigate malaria infection in relation to age and residential area.Design: A cross sectional study.Setting: Kipsamoite Dispensary of Nandi County in Kenya.Subjects: The demographic details and medical history for all consenting patients was taken by the clinical officer/nurse.Intervention: Clinical examination was done followed by presumptive diagnosis for clinical malaria.Main outcomes: A total of 349 patients were examined and tested for malaria during the period under study. Results: Whereas infection distribution was significantly associated with age groups P<0.05 (χ2 = 4.190); no significant difference in mean parasite density  distribution over the seven residential area categories (P = 0.261) (F = 1.305) was found. Conclusion: Patients aged > 5 years were found to be infected more than those aged <5 years. On overall, there is a need to start targeting patients above five years of age and encourage them to access malaria control interventions especially the use of insecticide treated bed nets to minimise their infection rate

Correlates of Behavior Management Strategies Among Learners With Autistic Spectrum Disorders In Primary Schools In Western Kenya

Practitioners handling learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) often feel ill-prepared to effectively manage this disorder.  Quite often, when faced with cases of challenging behaviour, teachers use coping strategies which may be counter-productive. This paper reports the findings of a study that sought to determine factors that influence practitioners’ choice of behaviour management strategies among learners with ASDs in primary schools in Western Kenya. An exploratory analysis set out to determine the practitioners’ perception of challenging behaviour and its influence on the choice of management strategies. The findings of the study revealed that practitioners training, work experience, collaboration and networking with other professionals, staffing levels, and support received from parents of children with ASDs played a significant role in the choice of strategies in management of behaviour presented by learners with ASDs. Evidence against rapid emergence of praziquantel resistance in Schistosoma haematobium, Kenya.

We examined the long-term efficacy of praziquantel against Schistosoma haematobium, the causative agent of urinary schistosomiasis, during a school-based treatment program in the Msambweni area of Coast Province, Kenya, where the disease is highly endemic. Our results, derived from treating 4,031 of 7,641 children from 1984 to 1993, indicate substantial year-to- year variation in drug efficacy. However, the pattern of this variation was not consistent with primary or progressive emergence of praziquantel resistance. Mathematical modeling indicated that, at current treatment rates, praziquantel resistance will likely take 10 or more years to emerge
