    Bolted Timber Connections. Part I. a Wafer Technique to Model Wood Deformation Around Bolts

    An experimental technique to model wood material behavior in the plane perpendicular to the axes of bolts in joint members is described. In this technique, 0.8-mm-thick wood wafers sandwiched between glass plates, with a steel pin representing a bolt passing through them, are loaded in tension. Wood deformation and failure around the pin, visible through the glass plates as loading proceeds, are photographed, and load-slip curves are also recorded. Reported tests were limited to steel pins of 12.5-mm diameter; preliminary findings suggest that information can be gained that sheds light on the effects of growth-ring orientation, wood defects, bolt end-distance, and multiple-bolt positions. The technique may be used directly, to indicate the sensitivity of joints to design factors such as those above, or indirectly, when results are combined with bolt bending data obtained with X-ray scanning

    Looking at quasars through galaxies

    Observations of quasars (QSOs) shining through or close to galaxies offer a way to probe the properties of the foreground matter through dust extinction and gravitational lensing. In this paper the feasibility of measuring the dust extinction properties is investigated using the backlitting of QSOs. We test our method to search for QSOs affected by intervening extinction, by matching the coordinates in the SDSS QSO DR3 catalogue with the New York University Value-Added Galaxy Catalog. In total, 164 QSO-galaxy pairs were found with a distance of less than 30 kpc between the galaxy centre and the QSO line-of-sight at the galaxy redshift. Investigating the QSO colours with multiband SDSS photometry, two pairs with galaxy redshifts z < 0.08 were found to be particularly interesting in that the QSOs show evidence of heavy Galactic type extinction with R_v ~ 3.1 at very large optical radii in the foreground spiral galaxies. With the available data, it remains inconclusive whether the two pairs can be explained as statistical colour outliers, by host extinction or if they provide evidence of dust in the outskirts of spiral galaxies. Deeper galaxy catalogues and/or higher resolution follow-up QSO spectra would help in resolving this problem. We also analyse five QSOs reported in the literature with spectroscopic absorption features originating from an intervening system. These systems are at higher redshifts than the other two and we find in most cases significantly lower best fit values of R_v. The wide range of preferred values of R_v found, although affected by substantial uncertainties, already indicates that the dust properties in other galaxies may be different from the Milky Way.     Complete double-shear joints with a single bolt were tested in tension. Approximately 10 X-ray scans were made of each joint as it was progressively loaded to failure; in this way, bending and overall displacement of the bolts within the members could be quantified. Combining the above data with measured joint-slip values enables the penetration of the bolt into the surrounding wood to be calculated for all positions along the length of the bolt. In a preceding related study, the authors observed the mechanisms of deformation that occur in thin wood wafers around a round steel pin of a diameter identical to that of the bolts used in the present work. By combining this information on behavior mechanisms in the plane at right angles to the pin axis with the X-ray data for whole joints, wood behavior throughout the joint and reactions against the bolt along its length can be estimated. The above analysis is applied principally to joints with 75- x 75-mm wood main members, 75- x 37.5-mm wood side members, and a single 12.5-mm diameter bolt an an end-distance of seven diameters. Representative X-ray scans of joints manufactured with a range of steel side-member thicknesses and bolt diameters are also included. The techniques presented complement theoretical model predictions and thus may be used to aid in optimizing joint design

    Do Semantics Matter in Empathetic Person Perception of Children or Adults with Mental Illness?

    Experiences of stigma, discrimination, or aggression negatively affect the well-being of people experiencing symptoms of psychopathology. However, empathy is thought to undermine prejudice and discrimination and is linked with positive outcomes (e.g., greater well-being, more social support, etc.) among those with stigmatized mental illnesses. The current work investigates the influence of target age (adult or child) and language type (person-first or identity-first) on how much empathic concern perceivers report toward individuals with a hypothetical mental health condition. This research contributes to an ongoing debate about whether person-first or identity-first language carries stigmatizing or protective effects, while also considering a novel potential moderator: target age (i.e., does person-first and identity-first language similarly affect perceptions of adults and children?). To this end, we employed an experimental vignette design examining empathy expressed toward individuals with a mental health condition, where age was manipulated within subjects and language was manipulated between subjects. The results determine that perceivers report greater empathy towards children than adults. However, the use of person-first and identity-first language did not result in significant findings. Thus, whether language type influences empathic concern remains uncertain. These findings suggest a need for increased empirical examination of interventions to inspire empathy towards people, perhaps especially adults, experiencing symptoms of psychopathology

    Evolutionary instability of Zero Determinant strategies demonstrates that winning isn't everything

    Zero Determinant (ZD) strategies are a new class of probabilistic and conditional strategies that are able to unilaterally set the expected payoff of an opponent in iterated plays of the Prisoner's Dilemma irrespective of the opponent's strategy, or else to set the ratio between a ZD player's and their opponent's expected payoff. Here we show that while ZD strategies are weakly dominant, they are not evolutionarily stable and will instead evolve into less coercive strategies. We show that ZD strategies with an informational advantage over other players that allows them to recognize other ZD strategies can be evolutionarily stable (and able to exploit other players). However, such an advantage is bound to be short-lived as opposing strategies evolve to counteract the recognition.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures.     Increasing body mass index at diagnosis of diabetes in young adult people during 1983-1999 in the Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden (DISS).

    Objective. To study trends in body mass index (BMI) at diagnosis of diabetes in all young Swedish adults in the age range of 15-34 years registered in a nation-based registry. Design. The BMI was assessed at diagnosis in diabetic patients 15-34 years of age at diagnosis, for a period of 17 years (1983-1999). Islet cell antibodies (ICA) were measured during three periods (1987-1988, 1992-1993 and 1998-1999). Setting. A nationwide study (Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden). Subjects. A total of 4727 type 1 and 1083 type 2 diabetic patients. Main outcome measures. Incidence-year specific BMI adjusted for age, gender and time of diagnosis (month). Results. Body mass index at diagnosis increased significantly both in type 1 (21.4 ± 3.6 to 22.5 ± 4.0; P < 0.0001) and in type 2 (27.4 ± 6.8 to 32.0 ± 6.0; P < 0.0001) diabetic patients, also when adjusted for age, gender and month of diagnosis. A similar significant increase in BMI was found in type 1 diabetic patients and in type 2 diabetic patients in the periods 1987-1988, 1992-1993 and 1998-1999; years when ICA were assessed and considered in the classification of diabetes. Despite this increase in BMI, there was no increase in the incidence of diabetes in young-adult people in Sweden. Conclusion. Body mass index at diagnosis of diabetes in subjects 15-34 years of age has substantially increased during 1983-1999 in Sweden when adjusted for age, gender and month of diagnosis

    Compilation of parameterized seismogenic sources in Iberia for the SHARE European-scale seismic source model.

    Abstract: SHARE (Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe) is an EC-funded project (FP7) that aims to evaluate European seismic hazards using an integrated, standardized approach. In the context of SHARE, we are compiling a fully-parameterized active fault database for Iberia and the nearby offshore region. The principal goal of this initiative is for fault sources in the Iberian region to be represented in SHARE and incorporated into the source model that will be used to produce seismic hazard maps at the European scale. The SHARE project relies heavily on input from many regional experts throughout the Euro-Mediterranean region. At the SHARE regional meeting for Iberia, the 2010 Working Group on Iberian Seismogenic Sources (WGISS) was established; these researchers are contributing to this large effort by providing their data to the Iberian regional integrators in a standardized format. The development of the SHARE Iberian active fault database is occurring in parallel with IBERFAULT, another ongoing effort to compile a database of active faults in the Iberian region. The SHARE Iberian active fault database synthesizes a wide range of geological and geophysical observations on active seismogenic sources, and incorporates existing compilations (e.g., Cabral, 1995; Silva et al., 2008), original data contributed directly from researchers, data compiled from the literature, parameters estimated using empirical and analytical relationships, and, where necessary, parameters derived using expert judgment. The Iberian seismogenic source model derived for SHARE will be the first regional-scale source model for Iberia that includes fault data and follows an internationally standardized approach (Basili et al., 2008; 2009). This model can be used in both seismic hazard and risk analyses and will be appropriate for use in Iberian- and European-scale assessments

    Cor triatriatum and lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum in the elderly: a case report

    Cor triatriatum is a rare congenital heart defect characterized by the presence of a fibromuscular membrane dividing the left atrium into two distinct chambers. Lipomatous hypertrophy of the atrial septum is an infrequently observed benign abnormality caused by large fatty tissue deposits in the interatrial septum. An increased incidence of atrial arrhythmias is described in both pathologies, while a significant obstruction of blood flow mimicking mitral stenosis is typically manifested in cor triatriatum. We report the case of a 75-year-old woman with a previously undescribed association of the above stated abnormalities detected by both transthoracic and transeosophageal echocardiography. Diagnosis was confirmed by means of computed tomography. The singular physiologic and anatomic factors underlying survival until such a late age are described. The diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical management is discussed and a short review of the literature performed

    Islet antibodies and remaining beta-cell function 8 years after diagnosis of diabetes in young adults: a prospective follow-up of the nationwide Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden.

    Objectives. To establish the prevalence of remaining beta-cell function 8 years after diagnosis of diabetes in young adults and relate the findings to islet antibodies at diagnosis and 8 years later. Design. Population-based cohort study. Setting. Nationwide from all Departments of Medicine and Endocrinology in Sweden. Subjects. A total of 312 young (15-34 years old) adults diagnosed with diabetes during 1987-88. Main outcome measure. Plasma connecting peptide (C-peptide) 8 years after diagnosis. Preserved beta-cell function was defined as measurable C-peptide levels. Three islet antibodies - cytoplasmic islet cell antibodies (ICA), glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies and tyrosine phosphatase antibodies - were measured. Results. Amongst 269 islet antibody positives (ab+) at diagnosis, preserved beta-cell function was found in 16% (42/269) 8 years later and these patients had a higher body mass index (median 22.7 and 20.5 kg m-2, respectively; P = 0.0003), an increased frequency of one islet antibody (50 and 24%, respectively; P = 0.001), and a lower prevalence of ICA (55 and 6%, respectively; P = 0.007) at diagnosis compared with ab+ without remaining beta-cell function. Amongst the 241 patients without detectable beta-cell function at follow-up, 14 lacked islet antibodies, both at diagnosis and at follow-up. Conclusions. Sixteen per cent of patients with autoimmune type 1 diabetes had remaining beta-cell function 8 years after diagnosis whereas 5.8% with beta-cell failure lacked islet autoimmunity, both at diagnosis and at follow-up

    A complete 3D numerical study of the effects of pseudoscalar-photon mixing on quasar polarizations

    We present the results of three-dimensional simulations of quasar polarizations in the presence of pseudoscalar-photon mixing in the intergalactic medium. The intergalactic magnetic field is assumed to be uncorrelated in wave vector space but correlated in real space. Such a field may be obtained if its origin is primordial. Furthermore we assume that the quasars, located at cosmological distances, have negligible initial polarization. In the presence of pseudoscalar-photon mixing we show, through a direct comparison with observations, that this may explain the observed large scale alignments in quasar polarizations within the framework of big bang cosmology. We find that the simulation results give a reasonably good fit to the observed data.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, significant changes, to appear in EPJ
