Utilization of ERTS-1 data to monitor and classify eutrophication of inland lakes
A technique is being developed for use of ERTS in estimating and monitoring trophic levels of inland lakes. Preliminary findings are that Michigan lakes and ponds of one acre or more are resolvable in bands 5, 6 and 7 of NASA MSS imagery under fair conditions (haze and 70% cloud cover). In processed imagery (CCT) smaller features, including water color patterns, are evident within some lakes of 40 acres or more. Image distortion of lake size, shape, orientation, etc. is minimal; discrimination of lakes and ponds from various wetlands is good. Subsequent ERTS and aircraft imagery will be correlated with detailed ground truth of water color and quality in eutrophic test lakes

High-temperature, high-pressure optical cell
The invention is an optical cell for containment of chemicals under conditions of high temperature and high pressure. The cell is formed of a vitreous silica tube, two optical windows comprising a vitreous silica rod inserted into the ends of a tube, and fused into position in the tube ends. Windows are spaced apart to form a cavity enclosed by the tube and the windows. A hole is drilled radially through the tube and into the cavity. Another vitreous silica tube is fused to the silica tube around the hole to form the stem, which is perpendicular to the long axis of the tube. The open end of the stem is used to load chemicals into the cavity. Then the stem may be sealed, and if desired, it may be shortened in order to reduce the volume of the cavity, which extends into the stem
ERTS-1: Automated land-use mapping in lake watersheds
The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 computer compatible tapes were used as a basis to generate land use maps in lake watersheds in southeastern Michigan. These maps, generated on a repetitive basis, provide information essential to governmental agencies concerned with planning and control of lake eutrophication. The ERTS mapping products included geometrically current land use map overlays at 1:250,000 and 1:48,000 scale and area measurement printouts. The printouts provide, within the watershed boundaries and by land use category, a quantitative measure of the amount of land, in square kilometers and acres. This quantitative measure of land use in watersheds is essential to the development and application of deterministic models, which compute nutrient flows into lakes and establish lake eutrophication rates
Adhesives for bonding RSI tile to GrPI structure for advanced space transportation systems
A system was developed for bonding RSI tiles to a graphite/polymide composite substrate which would withstand the full range of environmental conditions. The bonding system, designated RA59, consists of a mixture of glass (sesquisiloxane) resin in RTV 560 silicone. A significant number of data points for the RA59 are in the 65-psi failure range both when tested, and after exposure to 700 F. This is over two times the best shear and tensile values obtained with RV60 at this temperature. It is concluded that with a thorough understanding of the critical parameters involved, the higher values should be obtained consistently with the RA59. This is of particular significance if higher strength tiles were to be used in a hard-bonded configuration
Better Nonlinear Models from Noisy Data: Attractors with Maximum Likelihood
A new approach to nonlinear modelling is presented which, by incorporating
the global behaviour of the model, lifts shortcomings of both least squares and
total least squares parameter estimates. Although ubiquitous in practice, a
least squares approach is fundamentally flawed in that it assumes independent,
normally distributed (IND) forecast errors: nonlinear models will not yield IND
errors even if the noise is IND. A new cost function is obtained via the
maximum likelihood principle; superior results are illustrated both for small
data sets and infinitely long data streams.Comment: RevTex, 11 pages, 4 figure
Discovery of a Spin-Down State Change in the LMC Pulsar B0540-69
We report the discovery of a large, sudden, and persistent increase in the
spin-down rate of B0540-69, a young pulsar in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using
observations from the Swift and RXTE satellites. The relative increase in the
spin-down rate of 36% is unprecedented for B0540-69. No accompanying change in
the spin rate is seen, and no change is seen in the pulsed X-ray emission from
B0540-69 following the change in the spin-down rate. Such large relative
changes in the spin-down rate are seen in the recently discovered class of
'intermittent pulsars', and we compare the properties of B0540-69 to such
pulsars. We consider possible changes in the magnetosphere of the pulsar that
could cause such a large change in the spin-down rate.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
