Parallel Implementation of the PHOENIX Generalized Stellar Atmosphere Program. III: A parallel algorithm for direct opacity sampling
We describe two parallel algorithms for line opacity calculations based on a
local file and on a global file approach. The performance and scalability of
both approaches is discussed for different test cases and very different
parallel computing systems. The results show that a global file approach is
more efficient on high-performance parallel supercomputers with dedicated
parallel I/O subsystem whereas the local file approach is very useful on farms

Deep 1.1 mm-wavelength imaging of the GOODS-South field by AzTEC/ASTE -- II. Redshift distribution and nature of the submillimetre galaxy population
We report the results of the counterpart identification and a detailed
analysis of the physical properties of the 48 sources discovered in our deep
1.1mm wavelength imaging survey of the GOODS-South field using the AzTEC
instrument on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). One or
more robust or tentative counterpart candidate is found for 27 and 14 AzTEC
sources, respectively, by employing deep radio continuum, Spitzer MIPS & IRAC,
and LABOCA 870 micron data. Five of the sources (10%) have two robust
counterparts each, supporting the idea that these galaxies are strongly
clustered and/or heavily confused. Photometric redshifts and star formation
rates (SFRs) are derived by analyzing UV-to-optical and IR-to-radio SEDs. The
median redshift of z~2.6 is similar to other earlier estimates, but we show
that 80% of the AzTEC-GOODS sources are at z>2, with a significant high
redshift tail (20% at z>3.3). Rest-frame UV and optical properties of AzTEC
sources are extremely diverse, spanning 10 magnitude in the i- and K-band
photometry with median values of i=25.3 and K=22.6 and a broad range of red
colour (i-K=0-6). These AzTEC sources are some of the most luminous galaxies in
the rest-frame optical bands at z>2, with inferred stellar masses of (1-30) x
10^{10} solar masses and UV-derived star formation rates of SFR(UV) > 10-1000
solar masses per year. The IR-derived SFR, 200-2000 solar masses per year, is
independent of redshift or stellar mass. The resulting specific star formation
rates, SSFR = 1-100 per Gyr, are 10-100 times higher than similar mass galaxies
at z=0, and they extend the previously observed rapid rise in the SSFR with
redshift to z=2-5. These galaxies have a SFR high enough to have built up their
entire stellar mass within their Hubble time. We find only marginal evidence
for an AGN contribution to the near-IR and mid-IR SEDs. (abridged)Comment: 31 pages including 14 figures, accepted for publication in the MNRAS.

Optical Morphologies of Millijansky Radio Galaxies Observed by HST and in the VLA FIRST Survey
We report on a statistical study of the 51 radio galaxies at the millijansky
flux level from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters,
including their optical morphologies and structure obtained with the Hubble
Space Telescope. Our optical imaging is significantly deeper (~2 mag) than
previous studies with the superior angular resolution of space-based imaging.
We that find 8/51 (16%) of the radio sources have no optically identifiable
counterpart to AB~24 mag. For the remaining 43 sources, only 25 are
sufficiently resolved in the HST images to reliably assign a visual
classification: 15 (60%) are elliptical galaxies, 2 (8%) are late-type spiral
galaxies, 1 (4%) is an S0, 3 (12%) are point-like objects (quasars), and 4
(16%) are merger systems. We find a similar distribution of optical types with
measurements of the Sersic index. The optical magnitude distribution of these
galaxies peaks at I~20.7+-0.5 AB mag, which is ~3 mag brighter than the depth
of our typical HST field and is thus not due to the WFPC2 detection limit. This
supports the luminosity-dependent density evolutionary model, where the
majority of faint radio galaxies typically have L*-optical luminosities and a
median redshift of z~0.8 with a relatively abrupt redshift cut-off at z>~2. We
discuss our results in the context of the evolution of elliptical galaxies and

AzTEC Millimetre Survey of the COSMOS Field - II. Source Count Overdensity and Correlations with Large-Scale Structure
We report an over-density of bright sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the
0.15 sq. deg. AzTEC/COSMOS survey and a spatial correlation between the SMGs
and the optical-IR galaxy density at z <~ 1.1. This portion of the COSMOS field
shows a ~ 3-sigma over-density of robust SMG detections when compared to a
background, or "blankfield", population model that is consistent with SMG
surveys of fields with no extragalactic bias. The SMG over-density is most
significant in the number of very bright detections (14 sources with measured
fluxes S(1.1mm) > 6 mJy), which is entirely incompatible with sample variance
within our adopted blank-field number densities and infers an over-density
significance of >> 4. We find that the over-density and spatial correlation to
optical-IR galaxy density are most consistent with lensing of a background SMG
population by foreground mass structures along the line of sight, rather than
physical association of the SMGs with the z <~ 1.1 galaxies/clusters. The SMG
positions are only weakly correlated with weak-lensing maps, suggesting that
the dominant sources of correlation are individual galaxies and the more
tenuous structures in the region and not the massive and compact clusters.
These results highlight the important roles cosmic variance and large-scale

Kazakhstan holds some of the most significant Gulag heritage sites; however, tourism research remains limited. This article introduces analysis of contrasting sites and considers how some have been developed and others ignored. Selectivity in interpretation is linked to societal amnesia and the collective trauma experienced by the population of Kazakhstan. The article reaffirms the politicization of heritage in this emergent nation
Ideology and moral values in rhetorical framing:How wine was saved from the 19th Century Phylloxera Epidemic
Extant organizational research into crises has focused on the efforts of different actors to defend and legitimate their ideologies towards particular actions. Although insightful, such research has offered little knowledge about the moral reasoning underlying such action. In this paper, we explore how moral reasoning from different ideological viewpoints can lead to polarized debates and stalemate within the context of ecological crises. We apply our conceptual framework in an analysis of the 19th century French phylloxera epidemic. Drawing upon this analysis, we argue that, by adapting their moral reasoning, opposing stakeholder groups could maintain their underlying ideology, while at the same time pragmatically changing their actions towards the crisis. We discuss the theoretical implications of our analysis for historical research in organizational studies and research on organizations and the natural environment
The source counts of submillimetre galaxies detected at 1.1 mm
The source counts of galaxies discovered at sub-millimetre and millimetre
wavelengths provide important information on the evolution of infrared-bright
galaxies. We combine the data from six blank-field surveys carried out at 1.1
mm with AzTEC, totalling 1.6 square degrees in area with root-mean-square
depths ranging from 0.4 to 1.7 mJy, and derive the strongest constraints to
date on the 1.1 mm source counts at flux densities S(1100) = 1-12 mJy. Using
additional data from the AzTEC Cluster Environment Survey to extend the counts
to S(1100) ~ 20 mJy, we see tentative evidence for an enhancement relative to
the exponential drop in the counts at S(1100) ~ 13 mJy and a smooth connection
to the bright source counts at >20 mJy measured by the South Pole Telescope;
this excess may be due to strong lensing effects. We compare these counts to
predictions from several semi-analytical and phenomenological models and find
that for most the agreement is quite good at flux densities > 4 mJy; however,
we find significant discrepancies (>3sigma) between the models and the observed
1.1 mm counts at lower flux densities, and none of them are consistent with the
observed turnover in the Euclidean-normalised counts at S(1100) < 2 mJy. Our
new results therefore may require modifications to existing evolutionary models
for low luminosity galaxies. Alternatively, the discrepancy between the
measured counts at the faint end and predictions from phenomenological models
could arise from limited knowledge of the spectral energy distributions of

Debates about the purpose and content of history education in schools have been prevalent in most Westernised democratic nations over the last thirty years. At expense are essential questions concerning national identity/ies, competing narratives and the aims of history education. The impact of “history wars” have been felt within both Australia and England, as conservative commentators – including politicians and historians – have raised concerns about the depth and effectiveness of history education and have sought to make significant changes to the history curriculum for schools. This analysis examines the history wars in Australia and England, exploring the view that history education has been in danger and/or crisis and examining the curricular implications of a move toward greater recognition of national narratives. It raises some essential tensions that remain regarding two aspects of history teaching in both nations – (i) historiography and (ii) chronological understanding
